I visited Humming Puppy through ClassPass and can't wait to get back. I'll get to the yoga in a second but I think it's worth mentioning all of the amenities these guys provide. Want to take a shower? They provide complimentary towels and bath products. Need to charge your phone? They've got portable chargers. Thirsty? Have some coconut water or a tea. Forgot your hair tie? They've got you covered. There's a great area outside of the studio that I could definitely see hanging out in just to avoid leaving this studio! The studio itself is a bit dark and mysterious looking, and it "hums." I took a Mellow Hum class, which was a yin-esque class where the room was heated to 27 degrees. The instructor was amazing, and the hour flew by way quicker than I wanted it to. This studio is also a 5 minute walk from the Redfern station so really easy to get to!

A funny story: from time to time, Tamar would refer to "Guruji" saying Guruji said this or moved his shoulders like that. A gentle, understated reference, clarifying an action or attitude toward the practice. It took me a few months to realize that she was referring to BKS Iyengar, the founder of Iyengar yoga! The studio is clean and hygenic, with quality equipment and great extras (like supplied towels, because as if I can remember to bring my own). Studio classes are a max of 4 students at a time, so you generally get personalised attention unless it's a particularly busy Saturday morning and things are a bit crazy. Teachers spend time learning about each students body and modifying the program where necessary to make each student comfortable - I always feel confident that I'm in good hands, no matter which teacher I'm seeing or how badly my back is playing up. The only down side is being in a studio class when an XTend Barre class is on - the soundtrack is terrible! Haha I kid (although some of the songs should be left in the 90s)

It's such a relief to get away from nasty corporate gyms like FF and all the rest. UTS Fitness Centre isn't just for university students and staff - anyone can join, and the rates are much cheaper than corporate gyms. It's super cheap for me because I'm a student and a student union member (good tip to remember if you are a UTS student: join the union!) At UTS Fitness no one will push you to sign up for personal training, no one will come up and bother you about your weight or fitness goals (unless you want them to), and there is a wide variety of membership types (including 1 month and 6 month things). The change rooms are small and crowded, and this gym can be a little grotty at times. But to me it feels like home, so this doesn't bother me ... The equipment is generally of a very good standard. A quick run-down on the classes: anything run by Dian, Kirrily or Patricia will be ace. Carly's Super Circuit class is also great, and Carol does a relaxing (but sometimes quite challenging) yoga class on Saturday mornings. Guy's boxing classes are pretty solid, but Kashi's boxing classes freak me out. Suspension is an amazing class (using TRX cables and a lot of body-weight strength work) - turn up early because this one is popular. There is also a new(ish) kettlebell circuit class which is great. A lot of these classes really work on functional fitness, and can be catered to a wide variety of fitness levels, and adapted to take into account injuries, and the like. There is a bit of Les Mills (Body Attack, Body Pump), but it's not all Les Mills stuff. Oh, one thing, this is not a great gym if you like doing your training on the weekends. It closes on Saturdays at 3, and isn't open on Sundays.
Here I am, promising that I'll never post health related reviews and doing it again!…read more I'll keep it short. This is a professional, friendly, large sports medicine clinic. They have surgeon specialists (who handle knees and things like that), as well as physios, podiatrists, massage therapists, and pilates instructors. The physio room is very big, and there are private curtain areas as well as a big open space. It's quite a social experience - when you're seeing a physio there are often plenty of other patients around to chat to (because, let's face it, physio exercises are really boring). There's a parking area at the back, although it's really confusing which spaces are for Balmain Sports and which places are for the other businesses in the complex. I was yelled at for parking in the wrong spot, but I lived to tell the tale, so it wasn't so bad.

I've previously had excellent remedial massage from a provider at this clinic (Aaron Pidgeon) but a 90 minute session was somewhat spoilt by issues with payment and the multitude of HICAPS/EFTPOS systems in use at the centre. Initially my health fund card was declined. "You mustn't have those extras", "Maybe there is a problem with the provider " etc, etc. No and No. Then my EFT card was declined - "Perhaps you don't have enough funds in the account" , "Maybe there is something wrong with your card" Nope, plenty of cash there, and the card worked at the servo next door just 2 hours ago. Could it be a problem with the machine you're using, I asked? "Absolutely not, there are no problems with the systems here" was the reply from one of the front desk people, despite a somewhat uncertain look from her colleague. Eventually, the EFT was sorted and all was well, leaving me to wonder what the point of advertising HICAPS as a service was if it didn't work. My health fund (NIB) were great and accepted the claim over the phone no problem. Fast forward several months, and my lovely wife had success in making a late notice, same day appointment for me. After being asked her preference for an early or late slot, she was told "sorry, there is only one appointment after all, a late slot". No problem there as I was happy to get in same day. The receptionist she spoke to then said to call back if there were any problems. Several hours later, things happened as they tend to do and I annoyingly couldn't make the appointment. I called to cancel, and was condescendingly told that given I had provided less than 24 hours notice of a cancellation I was liable for a cancellation fee! WHAT THE? I didn't even have the appointment 6 hours ago, let alone a whole 24! Of course, because it was my 'first cancellation' (offence?) I was allowed off with a stern talking to. My point about my wife not being told of a strict cancellation policy when she initially made the appointment appeared to be entirely moot. As I prefer to keep my health care and my condescension separate, at least when the latter is delivered by the front office staff and not the medicos, I won't be back.

I'm 64 years old and have a history with my back since I was in my 20's. This back issue was different from my previous issues and I wanted Tom to understand that. He explained in detail with a little model of the spine what the problem most likely was. I was very grateful for that. I don't like it when medical people just say "Take these pills and I will see you in 2 weeks." After 2 weeks I feel I'm 99% back to normal. Two weeks after seeing my GP i was the same, no improvement. Thanks very much Tom. I really appreciate it.

I was sent a receipt for my month of classes and only managed to attend one class which was enjoyable. I quickly realised it was unrealistic of me to think that i could attend regularly due to many personal commitments and thought I would wear the cost of that one month and not sign up for another month. 6 months later I am reconciling my credit card and discover I have been billed for a further 5 months. Not a single receipt since the one that told me my classes expired on the 24/11/14 and no follow up in 6 months on why i was paying for something i wasn't using. When i rang them to ask what was going on. They basically told me I had made a mistake and it was irrelevant that i hadn't gone to any any classes and I would have to wear the $900 I paid for one class. I went back through the sign up process and still stand by my understanding that I was paying for just one month. Their terms and conditions on signing up do not fully display on the screen and I only saw the bottom two points. At no point did it mention my credit card was going to be debited for ever more until I noticed and gave them notice of cancellation. Time and time again it highlights that the classes expire a month after initial payment. There is a 3 and 6 month option that is significantly cheaper than their (in their view) ongoing monthly option. How does that work? So how did the team at Latin Junction respond? Did they offer me a refund or apologise for their confusing website. No, they have now banned me from all future classes and haven't even offered to refund me this next months $150 which came out of my account yesterday. They did however suggest that if I knew any 'nice' people they might be able to give them some sort of voucher. Great customer service guys........

But, despite the lack of sand, waves and seagulls, it is still the ocean and sometimes you've got to take what you can get. In the middle of summer Dawn Fraser ocean pool is packed with kids, water-polo teams, pregnant mums, big groups of teens, lap swimmers and anyone wanting to escape the city heat. The pool rises and falls with the tides, and we can kid ourselves that there's some surf if a ferry goes past creating a minuscule swell. Yes the beach may be free and Dawn Frasers may not be, but Dawn Frasers also has free parking, whereas many beaches do not. What's more, Dawny allows for jumps into the pool, it is shark-free and with timber boards instead of sand, you can make your way to the kiosk and back without sand being blown all over your icecream. Whilst I have some friends that won't come back here due to the occasional jellyfish, this is a standard ocean-related risk not specific to poor Dawny. When I lived in Balmain, Dawn Fraser Pool was the next best thing to a beach, and a whole lot closer. There isn't any sand (unless the tide is super low, I guess), but what you get is wooden boards to lie upon, which is actually really, really nice. You can stare down through the cracks at the water below. There's a mix of sun and shade, and a little canteen where you can buy hot chips and ice cream. You will probably see clear jellyfish, sea-weed, and little schools of fish in the water - it's a harbour pool so it comes with the territory. Sea lice can be a problem, though that's never happened to me. Dawny is generally nicer at high tide than during low tide, although at low tide you get to see the holes in the wooden slats: some big enough to let sharks in! Don't worry, there are no sharks, and they fixed the hole. I think. This pool is great for kids, and there are life savers hanging around watching everyone. As with Sydney beaches, it's best not to swim here after a heavy rain, as the run-off can contaminate the water.
