I started looking for someone to do a tattoo that was mostly black line work some time ago. While Cleveland has a lot of talented artists, I was convinced I wouldn't find anyone I trusted with this particular kind of work. Enter Chad from Black Metal. His work is truly beautiful and from the moment I saw it, I knew I could trust him with what I wanted. In fact, I walked in for my consult and what would have sent other artists running made him say "no problem, I'm actually booked for large pieces a few months out but that will only take an hour or so." So we were set for 6 weeks later. The shop was clean and professional and I felt comfortable from the moment I walked in. I love what Chad did with my design -- I truly could not be happier. Other shops in Cleveland might be more popular, but Black Metal is the BEST. I feel blessed to have this talent in our area, especially piercer Chris and artist Chad. (My arm by Chad is the Maleficent half-sleeve in the photos from 2014!) The shop is pristine & the guys here are goofy professionals playing loud music who care about making art on your body. You'll receive instructions on how the procedures will go and how to best care for your work when it's finished. Best around. Period. Got my third tattoo here, a small ghost on the back of my arm with some script. My fiancee designed the thing and we were sitting on it for a full month or two until I came back to Cleveland to see the family. Being from DC originally, I was surprised at the initial price estimate, and then blown away at the actual price. Dylan was professional, effective, and extremely fast. He perfectly captured the lady's handwriting and the design while cleaning it up enough to make it a permanent part on my body. The soundtrack was sick (This Will Destroy You playing droning dissonant harmony while getting a tattoo seemed appropriate) and Dylan was talkative and seemed genuinely interested in the design the whole time. The whole shop was clean and professional looking - even while waiting for Dylan to set up, the guys were talkative and interesting. Bottom line, I'm no longer getting ink done in DC - I can design it there and get it here for a fraction of the price. UPDATE from my drafts folders: Got my fourth tattoo done by Angus and it kills. Perfect geometry in a particularly annoying place to get that style done (right below my elbow). Perfect circles, triangles and squares. Guy also did a friend of mine right before and nailed it, a small little elephant on her ankle. He was professional, interested and a very talented artist. Couldn't recommend any other place to go in the area. 5/5 seems underrated. read more

This place is always clean and I am always taken care of. Angus has done all 3 of my tattoos and is amazing! They are simple but he does a great job and makes sure I'm happy with the design before he starts. My first tattoo was a walk in on a busy Saturday so they scheduled me an appointment for later that day. Other ones were also walk ins on week days and we were taken care of right away. Angus was in the middle of another tattoo but another artist got all of our info and printed out our designs so Angus could take us right away. 10/10!!! I recommend to all my friends. read more

In my last review, I'd mentioned that I hadn't been pierced at Black Metal. But this did change 6 months ago when I went in for a tragus piercing -- and then 2 weeks later for a nostril piercing. Chris is SO friendly and professional and KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING. I've had many piercings over the years at different locations, and I must say Chris has been the best. He is extremely knowledgeable, and it's evident he loves what he does. Last week he helped me change the piercing from a stud to a hoop and made sure I was still familiar with care instructions. He's always willing to help when questions arise, and he doesn't give off the cold, intimidating 'tattoo shop employee' vibe like a lot of people do. Go here for your piercings! The thing you notice about this place upon walking in, is the lack of massive amounts of flash on the walls. Instead, it's filled with the employee's drawings and paintings.. so I immediately saw that as a good sign. Of course, for the unoriginal or indecisive, there is a little bit of that. I was looking to get a tattoo that I had started years ago finished. I talked to the piercer, told him what I wanted, and he brought over an artist named Adam, who listened, and gave advice. I made my appointment, and a couple days later, I went in, and had my arm finished. Adam did a fantastic job, and I can't wait to go back!! read more

These are some really talented guys, with a range of artistic styles. Everyone at the shop was friendly and polite. I got a shoulder piece from Chad, and it's the best piece I have on my body. I shopped around quite a bit, as this was a cover up and I wanted someone with some artistic vision. I have three other tattoos that I did not get from here. Mainly because I was young and dumb when I got those three. Adam did my chest/sternum and it's the best tattoo on my body. It's beautiful and I wish I could stare at it all day lol. It healed perfectly. It didn't take long at all. Angus was also at the shop when I went in and the two of them together are hilarious. I got my tragus pierced here about two years ago and it was a great experience! The shop itself was very clean and I did not get any weird vibes walking in, like I did at the previous place I got a piercing. I was extremely nervous going into this appointment, as my previous ear piercing experiences at other places were horrible. However, the piercer was very professional and seemed very knowledgeable so that eased my anxiety a little bit. He talked me through the process and explained everything he was doing, which made me feel more at ease. He also explained how to properly care for new piercings. It was also reasonably priced, although I don't remember the exact amount, but it was much less than the other place I went to that did a crappy job. I would definitely recommend this place! I'm not a tattoo person but I have a friend who got all his tattoos here and he had very positive experiences as well. If I ever decide to get another piercing, I will go back here. read more

I got a second set of ear piercings here. Chris (the piercing guy) was amazing and I would definitely go back if I ever decided to get another piercing. He's extremely professional and passionate about what he does. He spent a lot of time making sure that they were going in exactly the right spot on my ears and that both ears looked the same. They came out perfect. He was also able to get me in right away even though I didn't have an appointment (although this was during the weekday, that probably wouldn't work out on the weekend). I can't comment on the tattoos, but I can say that the piercer here (Chris Holepunch) is one of the best. The shop is very clean, and everyone is always helpful. Chris is everything I want in a piercer - meticulous, very clean, knows his stuff, and goes out of his way to be great at his job. I think the prices are pretty decent - sure there are places to get piercings cheaper, but I'm sure that they're cutting corners and I'd rather pay more to know that I'm taken care of. Chris has done three microdermals for me, and they healed up great. He pierced them super quick and they barely hurt. However, he took plenty of time with placement before he even picked up a needle - which is exactly what I want. He will happily order in all sorts of jewelry if he doesn't have what you want. Also, I've stopped in just to have him look at how things were healing (they were a little red) and I didn't feel like I was wasting his time or bugging him - plus he had great advice to help the healing process along. read more

I got my nose pierced here and the piercer was one of the best. He was so clean and proficient. I was a little hesitant about my decision and was asking him a billion questions, but he never got frustrated nor did he rush me. He answered all my questions to the best of his knowledge, which was quite intensive. Even after bombarding him with all these questions, he took it one step farther to explain the process in detail to me and what the other options were and why he does it the way he does. I really appreciated that. He understood my hesitation for putting a puncture wound in my face. Even after the piercing, I bothered him for about two weeks while it was healing just to make sure it was healing right. He never got upset or frustrated with my constant questions or concerns, rather he reassured me and told me that if I was worried for any reason I should just come back and he would take a look at it to set my mind at ease. Thankfully, there was no need because it healed just fine, no complications. (I'm just a worrier sometimes). Overall, the place is really clean and neat. The atmosphere is really laid back and the all the people there are professional and nice. It was definitely a very pleasant experience. read more

I will never visit this shop again-the customer service is the worst. I came in wanting a three point helix spiral,with the spiral jewelry.I was told to get three separate piercings-let them heal, then the jewelry would be customized to fit(I WAS ASSURED THIS) I questioned that piercer (Chris) about being able to get suitable jewelry for the piercing. He responded that he could get the jewelry it wouldn't be a problem. Fast forward to after the three piercings healed-I came back to the shop to order the jewelry.Chris said the jewelry should not take more than 2 weeks. I was never contacted again by him. I called about 3 weeks later , to hear that they were having trouble getting the jewelry. I called several more times over the span of a year. Throughout this ordeal he did not contact me or provide any refund for the three piercings that I received. Without being able to get the spiral jewelry I just have three regular piercings :( on top of that, one piercing migrated really far from the other two and almost caused another piercing to reject due to its placement. This entire ordeal was a bummer and I hate leaving negative reviews, but if I would have known I would have not gotten the piercings. I will never visit or recommend this shop again.Not only did he not provide me with the piercing that I wanted the customer service he provided afterwards was horrible. I guess after he got the $100.00 it didn't matter. AND I also came with a friend- Chris completed the piercing. It was a regular lobe piercing but did not disclose the amount he was going to charge. I spent $100.00 total for three piercings and my friend was charged $50.00 for just one lobe. That amount is not competitive with other piercing artist throughout the state. They will not be visiting again either or recommend the shop for work. read more

Dylan Young was professional and made me feel very comfortable. Dylan Young is truly a great artist. I think the manager should make the rooms private in the shop. Other than that, the place was clean and the tattoo artists were very friendly. My past experience with other tattoo artists (Brooklyn from Addicted) was much different; the artist was rude, didn't apologize for messing up and putting East where North should of been on my compass tattoo, and was obviously trying to rush me out to get as many people inked as he could that day. Dylan Young took his time with helping me decide exactly what I wanted to get permanently tattooed on me. Dylan Young was polite with everyone who came through the shop's door that day. Black Metal tattoo is much benefited to have Dylan Young. I will continue going to Dylan Young to get inked for the rest of my life.
