Im so glad I found this salon! As soon as I entered, it was fantastic: the atmosphere is warm and friendly, and it is possible to feel that the team is made of professionals. My technician was such a fastidious person and he was attentive to details and it was so relaxing. I have actually liked the way they dealt with me during the process they are clearly aware of their craft and they are very keen with regard to the needs of their clients. I did not experience any form of pressure or discomfort at any time. The atmosphere of the salon is very relaxed and it makes spending time there very easy. I got out a satisfied person about my nails and the whole experience was excellent. I will definitely be coming back! I noticed the business name change from Sapphire Halsted to Black Onyx when I booked on the Booksy app and was admittedly a little hesitant until I saw Gala's name. I've been coming to Sapphire Halsted for many years and when I say I love everything about this place, I mean it. I love the bright space filled with art, fun music videos and chill vibes. The talent is unmatched. The techs keep the convo flowing when I'm feeling chatty, and don't press me when I just want to zone out. That's big for me. I've never had a bad mani, but IMO, Gala is the best. She meticulously removes every last shred of cuticle (and not in a way that hurts or makes my nail beds angry and red) and applies polish with such care. You can tell the owner takes great pride in his business because of the effort that he puts in to hiring great people and keeping the place looking nice. I always leave feeling relaxed and my nails looking amazing. I've never had a bad experience here and I look forward to visiting Black Onyx for years to come! read more

Came in for a pedicure with my friend. She made reservations for us ahead of time and they were ready for us upon arrival. The massage chairs were great, the services provided were good, and the nail polish colors were plentiful! If you don't have cash, they have Venmo codes you can scan to tip - always appreciated! Easy street parking which was convenient (paid). A week later, my toes are still looking good and my feet are in much better shape after all the soaking, filing, and moisturizing than they would be if I just painted them at home. Husband booked me a spa mani and pedi for Christmas. I looked forward to this because it's been years since I've had a mani/pedi. This is my first time to this location and I was excited since many of the reviews were great! Pedicure was standard, no complaints there. Manicure was fine until I felt like I was cut, and sure enough I was, both on my middle fingers. Right cuticle is clearly more cut up than the left. Fingers were not soaking in a bowl of water prior to the cuticle cutting. (Not sure if that's common practice in Chicago, cause it is in Honolulu.) They are a popular spot, a few walk-ins during my time there, and it appeared that there were some regulars. read more

They do great work but upset with the customer service! I have been going to Black Onyx monthly since June 2025- seeing the same nail tech since July. I always schedule my next appointment as I am leaving the salon to stay ahead of my schedule. Typically I receive a reminder through their booksy app the day before which I did not receive so I called and they overbooked my appointment. I did not receive an apology and did not feel like they were very accommodating for the mistake. I am very loyal once I find great salons but this was a major turn off especially with the holidays around the corner. As she does good work I will not say which tech this was with but make sure you are seeing your appointments within the booksy app if you call in or book in person. read more

Visited Black Onyx (Sapphire) for the first time. They did an excellent job on both me and my husband's pedicures. I also needed a new set of gel nails and she suggested using Gel X. I absolutely loved this, very natural and supposed to be good for my natural nail growth. They have an AMAZING selection of color options, (cat eye, chrome, Gel, their design work is AMAZING! This was a great spot for a mani pedi! I came here with my husband after calling same day for an appointment and they took us when we got there immediately. The staff was nice and professional and everything seemed clean (they wore gloves). It was $110 for 2 mani pedis (without tip). Unfortunately they don't have the longer lasting regular nail polish (not gel). Also I requested they not cut my cuticles bc they are sensitive and they actually listened, which not all places do. Really wanted to like this place - came in with very high hopes. Ended up not even finishing the service because the nail tech was extremely rude and embarrassed me. She made it very clear she was annoyed of me by sighing loudly and putting her head in her hands, shaking her head and rolling her eyes...right as I sat across from her. Literally stopped the service right then and there after she took the polish off and told her I didn't want to continue but would pay for the polish removal. The manager was shocked and kept apologizing profusely but I was so uncomfortable, I just wanted to leave. They ended up not charging me for the polish removal which is good I guess. I called this place Tuesday 4/20/2021 to reserve an appointment for 3 people on 4/24/2021 @ 12:30 pm(1 person was coming from Elgin), 3 no chip manicures, first red flag was the chick tried to push pedicures (it's one thing to upsell it's another to try and tell clients why services to get). After confirming (finally) over the phone I received a text from Boosky I only starting coming to this place because my friend said it was nice clean friendly and did a good job (2 out of 3 ain't bad). My friend has over 20+ years of management experience which includes Red Door Spa so he has seen good bad and ugly services performed. We are both big on customer service and that's a huge major component in any field. My friend arrived at 12:10 extremely early for our 12:30, I tell her to go ahead and check in I'll be there in a few minutes, "I tried and they said there is no appointment under your name" she says. I arrive and they first act dumb like they can't find my appointment, then after about 5 minutes they find it "oh, did you get a confirmation, oh we are booked & very busy ". Then instead of apologizing & at least taking my guest that came from Elgin they tell us you can come back at 4:30... no I can't, I have a life & things to do. I ask for a business card with managers name on it, "we don't have a manager" well how do you get paid, who signs your checks. We leave and go on about our day and they have the nerve to call me at 3:30 to say "are you coming at 4:30". So clearly they aren't very smart and don't comprehend very well still with no apologies and or no ownership whatsoever. I was there two weeks ago (I've been coming to this place for about two months) my friend and I come every two weeks, I noticed oddly enough yesterday morning that there are distinct marks on the end of all of my nails, the nails them-selves are uneven that were initially shaped unevenly, and one of my thumbs chip literally down the side of my nail so I was ready to get my no chip manicure done. This place has a lot to learn about customer service and about consistency. One visit the nail polish doesn't cover the nails, another time they place products under the nails to ensue their is no breakage, two weeks they don't place anything under the nail and it cracks. I will never return to this location. I am very dissatisfied and disappointed. I will never suggest this place to anyone. There are to many other place to go to and I work too hard for my money to be treated in such an nasty and rude behavior. If I could rate no stars I would! read more

Unfortunately, due to losing my job and how long it took to become financially stable again, it wasn't until 2023 that I made it in again. Absolutely love Sapphire salon! It's right across from where I live so close, convenient, and the no chip is some of the best I have had! They are very clean and they do an amazing job with shape and even offer you a short back massage after! To get off no chip they have these cute black fingertip covers and they even give you pens that work for you to use your phone while your waiting !!
