After extensive interviews, I recently chose MV Tree in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to perform major…read moretree trimming on my 5-acre property.  I could not have been more satisfied!   As a construction professional, I look for six key indicators of a Quality Tree Service:  1) verified insurance and licensing; 2) certified professionals; 3) a solid reputation with previous clients and customers; 4) workers who exhibit professionalism and safety; 5) a detailed written estimate of what is to be performed with the exact cost; and 6) solid references.   MV Tree hits all these key indicators like no other.   The owner, Matt Velderman, met with me to ascertain what I wanted done and made some knowledgeable recommendations on items I had not thought of.  He is an authentic, sincere owner/operator who takes great pride in his service and the people he hires.  He personally supervised the entire two-day project with employees who exhibited professionalism and safety handling chain saws, woodchippers and bobcat excavators.  They left my property clean, neat, and undamaged, looking better, in fact, than when they arrived.   Be very careful when contracting for tree service.  Many fly-by-night operators with a rusty pickup truck and a chainsaw will quote either a price outrageously high or unrealistically low.  You will most assuredly not be happy with either of these types of businesses.   However, Matt's bid hit squarely in the Goldilocks zone:  not too high and not too low but just right for a job well done.  I recommend MV Tree without reservation.

We selected one of the options they offered that did not include riprap, as we had no reason to suspect it was needed or would serve any valuable purpose. Over the course of this past winter our shoreline deteriorated in multiple locations. The yard running along the coir logs sunk allowing water from the lake to erode the dirt and grass that had butted up against the logs. In addition, one of the logs separated from the other which created a gap where extensive erosion has occurred. Other issues include wooden stakes being left protruding in the yard which had been pounded in to secure Jute Netting and finally (resulting in countless stubbed toes throughout the summer), and the rope/twine that connects the water stakes and logs were broken in many places. The people at Landtech assessed the shoreline this spring and attributed the issues to muskrats. They agreed to repair to the shoreline, but that was in late March and it has been radio silence since then. I like the people at this company, but I am not pleased with the work they did, especially given the amount of money it cost. I will not be recommending their services to my friends and neighbors on the lake.

He underestimates the time needed to do the job, and then blames the particular bad condition of your property for taking more time. His verbal promises change from pre-quote to day of job, he asks for more money after the job is underway (for things he forgot to put on the quote), and he won't come back to fix problems you discover after you paid him. I posted pictures here of things he didn't finish that he promised to do in exchange for more money. Very poor communication unless he wants something from you (doesn't return calls or text back). What would have been a 5-star review became 2 stars due to leaving it unfinished. It's really too bad, because the unfinished work is your last impression of him and it overshadows the lion's share of work he does really well.
