This was a trip down memory lane for me. I would always visit Black Swan when I was in college and hadn't been back in almost 2 years. The interior changed a bit and their menu is a lot bigger now. I don't know how to explain it but the vibes here are always the best. Everyone working here is nice and will make conversation with you! Their drinks are always made perfectly. I've been here a handful of times now and every time, my visit has been consistent. The staff is quite nice and knowledgeable about the coffees they make and serve. I'm always asked whether I want to dine in or get it for takeout. In fact they always assume, I'm dining in and I usually have to tell them it's the opposite. One of these days, I will have my coffee and pastry to stay. The cups used for dine in appear to be sturdy and of good quality. They always have a good selection of bakery items available. They seem to know if their regulars are. Whenever I'm there I always see them greet each other by name. They have their own rewards program via Cashapp. I always order a flat white and it's been consistently the right temperature and taste every single time. They always acknowledge my 7 year old and treat him like a big customer. He appreciates that a lot and that's what earns my loyalty. It's a black owned business. Starbucks is literally right in front of them on the next street. You can see them from the cafe. Unfortunately couldn't go in because of covid, however, there was a nice little set up to see the menu at their front window along with pastries/bagels just below at the front window. Right now you can order at the front door with one of the very friendly baristas. Great place for a quick coffee or latte. I enjoyed my mocha latte with almond milk. The almond milk did not over power the espresso or mocha flavor. For me, the mocha syrup was a tad bit too sweet for my liking but otherwise I slurped it down in my usual 5 seconds lol (I dont know how ppl sip coffee and have it last for an hour. I sip sip sip sip sip and it's gone in seconds). They accept Apple and google pay too. From what I could see, there isn't much seating inside but I think on non covid days the front window is usually a small bar table seating. Definitely recommend coming to Black Swan! read more

Let me start off by saying I am coffee and espresso enthusiast and formerly a barista so I understand how drinks are made, and even if I'm not-- anyone who orders the same drink over and over will know how their drink is made. I placed my order with the woman at the kiosk. I ordered a large iced Americano with 3 shots of espresso and I asked for a SPLASH of cream. The man working was the one preparing drinks. I saw there was a drink being prepared that did not look like what I wanted. It was a cup of ice filled with milk so I assumed it wasn't mine. To my surprise it was my drink .. the man working asked me what milk I wanted and I replied I didn't want any milk and only asked for a splash of cream. The woman responded and said she had added the cream in the cup, I kindly asked if it was just a little since that's what I asked for. The man rudely responded and tried to explain to me how Americano is made which I told him I understood but I was double checking what I asked for was correct. He then says to me in a condescending tone "what color do you get when you add water to cream or milk?" I stood there shocked and told him he was being condescending which he then responded "I'm not I'm explaining to you so you don't think I f***ed up your drink" I was honestly in shock with the way I was being spoken to that way and responded with "it's fine" and left. The location is small, quaint, but upscale, and trendy. Great place to grab your cappuccino, latte, or espresso, and have a chat with friends. The atmosphere is perfect. The staff are very friendly, the service was absolutely perfect, and they were kind enough to get my order ready quick. I was parked illegally, and had to hurry. This coffee shop is a cute cafe near Rutgers Newark. I ordered a latte and croissant to go. Delicious! Great spot to pick up a quick bite and support a quality local business. They also have a point system which I think gives you free things when you earn enough points. It's located right on Hasley street, so you get a lovely window view of the city but conveniently located within only a 5 to 10 minute walk to Rutgers Campus. The shop is small. Black Swan is cozy, charming, and modern all at once, with brick walls and local art hanging on the walls. The shop is small but there is a decent amount of seating. A few small tables along the wall, counter seating, and stools by the window... perfect to grade papers or read a book on a Saturday morning. Black Swan is known for their expresso (hence the title) and they live up to their name by delivering a strong savory brew. They also rotate choices of single origin pour over coffee. I had the Brazilian just recently and it was fantastic. Drip coffee and cold brew is also available as well as an assortment of tea. They have a number of baked goods... donuts, croissants, cookies!!! I typically avoid sugar but I splurged in a giant walnut chocolate chip cookie here and it was so worth the calories! Yummy in my tummy... and paired with a Guatemalan pour over hot coffee ... perfection! Staff/baristas are professional, warm, and welcoming. They know their trade well and are happy to answer any questions you might have. My only complaint is the price for the pour over single origin coffee is a bit high for the small size. Almond croissant is delicious!!!! This is the 2nd place I've found with these exact croissants in the tri-state area! They have a variety of doughnuts and pastries: hibiscus donut, lemon poppy seed donut, and more. In addition to coffee, they have a lot of tea options! I usually get the chai when I'm in the mood for a latte. I did try the yellow tea once, and I should warn you, I was super energized! So if you need some waking up, give it a try!
