Oh, Blackhand Gorge, how I love you so! This is a great place to go escape for a few hours. There are plenty of trails to venture down and kayaking down the Licking River is so fun, there are tons of neat areas to jump out at and explore. The rock formations are mesmerizing and there's even waterfalls back in there if you look hard enough. If you're in central Ohio and don't want to make a day trip to Hocking Hills, stop by Blackhand Gorge, you won't be disappointed!

Something to do for everyone here. Many parts have wide black top paths that are wheelchair accessible. Trails are only slightly challenging, but appropriate for steady-footed children. My 6 & 8 year old had a wonderful time. Stunning views of the river are plentiful. There are lots of places that would be wonderful for a picnic on the rivers edge. There is kayak access to the licking river on both ends of the park. It's a beautiful trip you won't regret!

This is a really great find not far from columbus. It travels along Licking River. At one end people put boats in the river and float on tubes and such. The water is green though, my guess is that it is the fertilizer from the farms around it. People frequently swim there though. There is a well establish bike path too, it's about 4.5 miles long, shaded and the scenery is gorgeous. There gorge make a very diverse and dynamic ride. There are plenty of paths to take of into the woods as well. They are rustic though. The only paved trail is the bike trail. There's also a lot of opportunity for bolder scrambling and climbing if you are into that as well as. Just a gorgeous park! I plan to revisit in the fall, I can only imagine how photogenic it would be. Sunsets are great too. Most of the overlooks give you view of the sky where the sunset across the water from the river.

I used to go to this park in the summer, over the years because they hosted a summer concert series in the amphitheater that included one group that I enjoyed more than others (anyone know if Paradise Island is still performing?). Outside of that, we never spent much time there. Yesterday, we decided to check out areas to relax and decided to give Sycamore Creek Park a look since we really hadn't seen the park itself. It's fairly decent, with a walking trail and a few picnic areas, in case you want to take family and friends for a cookout. It even has a section you can reserve. There's also a tennis and basketball court, if you're feeling active. I took interest in the pond area, in which several people were fishing. I walked over to the south side of it and found a nice vantage point or photos. However, if I wanted to take advantage of the sunset, there was a huge rock that I could pose my subjects on. I didn't walk around, but I may do it later to see if there is anything else of interest. I did add two photos so you can see what I'm taking about, regarding the pond. I understand that they have a sledding hill in the winter time. Something you might want to consider for the kids (and adults). Worth checking out.

Kid K said that didn't bother her, as long as we could do the trail (which is open all summer.) But we couldn't find it. Signage and maps for that are awful. We found the start of the trail, but past that, multiple branches went all over. I will say the main park trail system is well-marked with blazes, and the park map does pretty well with them. But no sign of the fairies. I had hoped we'd at least be able to follow other people since there were so many there for the party, but folks were going to all the other parts of the park too. We passed a mini zip-line area and a forest playground, but the kid wasn't interested, and eventually got worn out and just wanted to leave. So, two stars for the fairy trail portion since it needs more organization. I'm sure if we'd actually found it we'd give it more. But four or five for the park as a whole, which has loads of amenities: shelters, parking, playgrounds, dog park, restrooms (fancy pit ones,) and the mound, which I also didn't see. A big lake and a couple smaller ponds, and wetlands. Oh, well. Maybe we'll try again some other time.

This place is a mountain biking haven; most trails are off-limits to hikers, but there is a trail for hiking. Wear good shoes if you're walking a lot- Converse won't cut it. Can't wait to return with better shoes. Great views. Shelter houses, a playground, and monuments. Surely this place is packed with history- a great place to explore. Another thing- when driving to the top, there's a sign saying No Motor Vehicles, so I tried to turn the car around. DON'T do this- it's too narrow and dangerous- plus the road is one way. I kept going and was relieved to see other cars on top. There's one road up the mountain and another down, and one-way signs once you get to the top. The No Motor Vehicle signs are for the mountain bike trails.

The land is owned by Columbus, but the park is maintained by Dublin. To access the park, you pull into an area that also leads down into an office complex. There is a small parking area directly across from the marked trailhead. The trail itself is a combination of paved and boardwalk, although there are also some worn down dirt areas that get you closer to the river. If you enter through this signed trailhead area, you will find a fork in the road. The one to the right takes you on a paved walking trail that ends with a staircase that takes you back up to the street level. The fork to the left takes you towards the boardwalk area, which has a number of little streams and a nice little forested area. There is a ton of waterfowl and birds throughout, and a lot of interesting plants and trees to enjoy, as well. The noise of the animals and river helps provide a calming atmosphere, despite the proximity to the roads. This is well worth a visit!

From a nature preserve perspective, this is good as it gets! I chose this spot for a 32° Tuesday sunset walk and had the place to myself. There is a limited amount of gravel paths leading to a small pavilion where you can sit and overlook the winding creek below. Otherwise, bring the appropriate shoes to walk the trails as they will likely be soft after rain or snow. I found a couple of benches along the trails, a few bridges that cross the creek, and even a throne carved from a large fallen tree trunk. Although my walk took me less than a mile, I spotted many squirrels and birds, three does, some fungi, and a (suspected) great horned owl. I am happy I stopped at this sweet little spot to immerse my soul in nature. If the forest is beckoning you to stop, pause, and refresh, won't you come by and stop for a while?
