I have no idea where the poor ratings come from. My experience has been the complete opposite of the people disparaging the staff. I would also poi9nt out that Tamiya is Japanese, not Chinese, and the other brands (Traxxas, Redcat Racing, Arrma) carried are headquartered in the U.S., to my knowledge.

Pricing is mostly retail sometimes a little inflated but considering you are in Canada and won't have to pay international shipping you can get some pretty good deals on rare and high demand figures. Specializing in movie memorabilia, stamps and other "collectible paper goods", I bought a really wicked Return of the Dragon postcard to send my friend Jamie who lives in Mexico. El RETORNO DEL DRAGON! Fantastic. Three middle aged guys behind huge desks piled high with stuff chatted me up and told funny jokes while I visited. Plus (!) there was their dog Tilly, who is one of the funniest dogs I've ever met (see my photos). It's also a great place to buy books on movies/books that are turned into movies/books about movie stars, etc. A really fun place to visit if you're headed out east.

There's a few games I've been meaning to buy because I want to get into board gaming. I think they are so cool but I'm not ready for any heavy or long games. I had a list and while browsing I found one. The super helpful staff located the other two I wanted. They seem to know their games here which is great! There's also a huge chess section. Lots of fancy sets. Very cool to look at but I don't need to buy expensive chess sets at the moment. Their selection of games range in age/difficulty level so this is a great place for all ages. Will definitely come back once I'm comfortable with my new games and ready to expand my collection some more!

But I can see that newbies could be overwhelmed with all the options coming in. We decided to buy a board game for a friend's child, age 6. My boyfriend ran off to find a game at Meeple without consulting me first. He came out empty-handed, saying there was nothing suitable for that age range. I'm SURPRISED. There's a board game for everything there. I'm not an expert for games for six-year-olds, so I just Googled, found a dad blog and decided Catan Junior was it and purchased online here. They processed our order immediately and were ready for pick up the same day if needed. The truth is my BF was about to check out at Indigo, which is 30% more before I reminded him to check at Meeple again for prices. The only difference *I think* is the packaging art is slightly different and the box is larger at Meeple. If their staff actively asks every customer walking in and tries to help, they can convert more casual or newbie gamers--what a lost opportunity.

Nick, the owner said that he sold the same gun yesterday to a customer for $225, and he was gonna give it to me for $180. Great, I thought. Then I went on the internet and realized that the same gun is actually a piece of crap and can be ordered from any website for $50!!! Guy charged me $180 for a $50 gun. Don't even think of buy knives, they're all marked up 2 or 3 times the retail value as well. Of course I went back and confronted Nick. He had the nerve to play dumb, saying things like "oh, it's not the same online" even though it was the exact same model. I even printed the page off the website and showed it to him. HE STILL DENIED IT, to my face, and tried to call ME an idiot and a liar who didn't know what I was talking about. These guys either don't know the retail value of anything in their store, or they deliberately play stupid. I ended up getting store credit after a long argument. These guys will rip you off without blinking an eye, and they do it by acting like the friendliest sales people. Horrible business practices. If you're gonna buy anything from there, don't pay a cent over 1/2 of the marked price. They will say "oh we gotta make a living too", but you have to be firm and tell them straight up that you know what the retail value is, and that's all you're willing to pay. Bottom line: The only surplus store downtown, but avoid it if you can. You'll pay too much and possibly be creeped out by the overly opinionated staff. Maybe try save-more next to Moss Park.
