A big pro for Mishap Games is that James will take a chance on you even though you are a stranger when you ask to host games. Some stores are very shy. The big problem in 2022 and in 2023 was the story was poorly cleaned. The tables were not cleaned during the week and the trash cans were never taken out either. Therefore there were nats flying around all the time. I remember for three weeks straight there was a donut box under the check out counter. The bathrooms was something out of a Eastern Kentucky rest stop. Then in the summer of 2023 there was the huge issue where out of nowhere James stopped folks from coming to the store and using his tables. He was disappointed that folks were coming in and not even saying hello or buying anything, then after months of coming to the store they would just vanish. I totally understand his frustration. Sadly, this hasty policy was enough for some folks to leave the store and never come back. And it all could have been prevented by just having the discord calendar managed better and better communication with loyal customers from the get go. Within a matter of days James reversed his policy due to the feedback he got on discord. Thankfully, for 2024, the store is much much cleaner. Sadly, once again due to horrible communication and judgement, James has lost more business. About 1.5 hours before my group was going to play at his table, one of the players who lives within walking distance brought 3 or 4 kids into the store. They were not his kids. Then I get notified that if this same person or anyone that has been playing with him at the same table does this again then we will no longer have access to the tables. So this is like five people. These five people did nothing wrong. So I just saved James the trouble by just banning myself for life. I wouldn't have a spine or self respect if I walked back in there. I wise manager would have a store policy in place for such matters if that was such a liability risk (which is what I was told) and the customer would have been told to leave immediately. Furthermore, a wise manager would tell the person that brought in the kids that they would be banned from playing, instead of casting a wide net and getting customers involved who are innocent and have done nothing wrong. This store has a lot of potential, but James seems determined to run off customers. It already has a great location with great parking. Sadly, James has failed to capitalize on the basement to help folks socialize (Fiji Island days) and the Kitchen (Fiji Island days) for supplemental income. James is an expert with games, and is friendly and can talk with you, but he's a horrible manager, and a unfair person. The margin for error is too thin when you compete with Amazon and roll 20 and the like. I don't see this business lasting through 2025. Just a wild guess.

In particular, Magic: The Gathering is their specialty. They deal in box sets, booster packs, and singles. Their prices are reasonable for the going rates within the TCG market at any given time. In addition, their staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the various games they sell. If your inner nerd has a TCG itch to scratch, skip the big box stores and pay Star City Comics & Games a visit.

After being awarded the Yelp NC Triad Squad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, celebrating their contributions and accomplishments throughout the year, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and businesses, and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And Sports Haven / Collectibles & Memorabilia, in Salem, Virginia, is a perfect example. I remember when I was a teenager and Saltwater Sport Fishing with my father in his Concord 27 small yacht on December 31st, 1972, off the coast of Isla Verde, Puerto Rico. At a young age, I had won several fishing tournaments catching a 403 pound Blue Marlin on one occasion, and a 97 pound Male Fish Dolphin, also known as Mahi Mahi on another. But this day was very memorable to me, because the plane where Roberto Clemente was traveling in on a humanitarian mission to deliver emergency relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua, crashed in this same area. He was killed instantly in the crash and his body was never recovered. We participated in the recovery. Since that day on, Robero Clemente's rookie card value increased immensely. Not only because he played his entire 18-year Major League Baseball career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, becoming a franchise icon and one of the greatest players of all time, but because of his deep commitment to helping others through his humanitarian work off the field, which led to his death. I gave this above example so you can see how the value of collectibles and morabilia is determined. When I entered the Sports Haven shop, the staff member at the time greeted me and welcomed me to look around. I wouldn't have space to list everything I saw, but I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the great variety and quality of merchandise. Since I moved to Roanoke, I have been a fan of the Virginia Tech Football Team and its mascot, the Hokie Bird. So I asked him if he had a figurine of him and he showed me one. It was nice but a bit large. The one I had at home was a more appropriate size. I had to go, but am planning to return another day to view more in detail all the valuable items they have in stock. And I highly recommend that you do the same and support this locally owned and operated small business.
