The field of honor memorial is a beautiful and peaceful place to come and pay respects to those who served in the military as well as to learn and educate about some aspects of this country's history. My daughter especially enjoyed the fountain and the quotes from great presidents of the past, and she also learned a bit about 9/11 and the twin towers at the World Trade Center. My wife and I, having grown up on Long Island, NY, remember that day very vividly, and we had a moment of realization together to understand that our daughter never knew about those towers or the events surrounding that day. I recommend taking the kids sometime to Triad Park and making a stop there (or coming on your own, of course). There is also a playground within walking distance, so the kids were able to get a little extra enjoyment on top of their educational moment lol!

And then you can read the below to learn more about it. The marker reads, "First free school in the state, established under Common School Law of 1839, opened January 20, 1840, in this vicinity." Online there is more information. "It has long been known that the first public school in the state opened in Rockingham County on January 20, 1840. That fact is cited in several textbooks. Less well known is the basis for this claim and especially difficult to determine is where that school was located in the county. The Common Law of 1839 authorized counties to hold elections in which voters might vote for or against taxes for public schools. In elections in late 1839 sixty-one of sixty-eight counties voted to support school taxes. The remaining seven counties soon followed course. By 1846 every county had at least one public school. "Notice of the opening of the Rockingham school appeared February 18, 1840, in the Greensborough Patriot and was reprinted the same month in the Raleigh Standard. The article indicated that the "first free school in Rockingham County went into operation on the 20th of January 1840." Further, it stated that "this is probably the first free school commenced in the State." The story did not specify the location of the school but did indicate that the county had been divided up into districts with houses to be completed and schools in operation in each "in a short time." "Tradition has it that the first school was located in the present Williamsburg community in the southeastern part of Rockingham County. Some accounts even refer to the "Williamsburg School." Since the community was known by other names as late as 1960, the reference appears to be ill-founded. However, support may be found for the claim that the general vicinity was the site of an early school. Deeds drafted in April and December 1840 transferred ownership of one acre from local parties to the Literary Fund for the "advancement of education and promotion of common schools." The tracts were in the general area of Hogan's Creek north of the Williamsburg community. It is impossible, with the available documentation, to fix precisely the location of the first school cited in the newspaper account but local tradition strongly supports the general vicinity of the site." He told me the demand for one particular class was so high it was only offered by lottery to juniors and seniors. The name of that course was the History of the Vietnam War. I love the powerful symbolism of this monument. The first word inscribed on it is "Vietnam". The center of the letter "V" in Vietnam takes the form of a cut out wedge at the top of a granite slab. It seems as though the slab is in danger of being split in half, just as our country was split in half over the war. The inscription reads: Vietnam Each peaceful dawn in this place we are reminded of these men who died for their country Stephen J. Brennan P.F.C. Ara. Crosby Jr. W.O. Frederick W. Dauten Jr. Maj. The marker reads, "Set up in the First Presbyterian Church to receive wounded from Battle of Bentonville, 1865, was here." Online, there is more information. "During the winter and early spring of 1864-1865, General William Tecumseh Sherman's army wreaked destruction on Georgia and South Carolina. On March 8, his men entered North Carolina. Concerned with the ability to feed and supply his 60,000 men, Sherman divided his army into two wings: the left, commanded by Major General Henry Slocum and the right commanded by Maj. Gen. Oliver O. Howard. Both wings advanced in the direction of Goldsboro, as Confederate forces from across the region were cobbled together in an attempt to delay their progress. "On March 19-21, at Bentonville, Sherman's army lost 304 killed in action, 1,112 wounded, and 221 missing. The Confederates lost 239 killed, 1,694 wounded, and 673 missing. While many of the wounded were treated immediately at the numerous field hospitals established by both Federal and Confederate forces, some Southern soldiers were sent west to Greensboro. Many of these men were attended to at temporary Confederate hospitals established at the First Presbyterian Church and Edgeworth Female Seminary. The congregation of the church had offered their services and their facility to the Confederacy as early as April 1862, but it had not been used as a hospital until the latter half of March 1865. "Locals recorded their shock at the number of wounded. A local woman who was present recorded that those who died of their wounds "were laid in a semi-circle around the pulpit in their last long sleep." The exact number of those who died at the church remains unknown. A monument to them is located at Green Hill Cemetery. After the Federal occupation of Greensboro, the field hospital was converted back into the church once more." Beautiful Whirled is by artist Mike Roig and it stands on a traffic island in downtown High Point on MLK Blvd. The 15 foot tall painted red sculpture includes a spinning wheel, powered by the wind. It is silent as it spins, almost hypnotizing. There is very limited parking in this section of High Point. I was able to park illegally on a side street briefly so that I could approach the artwork. The Greensboro Public Library - Kathleen Clay Edwards Branch is a lovely library, tucked away…read morebetween some of the greenway walking paths here in the "gateway" city. The setting is so serene and unexpected that I almost thought I had taken a wrong turn when I went to meet someone there. However, when making my last turn, there it was in all its archival glory. The Greensboro Public Library - Kathleen Clay Edwards Branch is simple and stunning all at once. It has mid-century modern architecture, with well-kept grounds nestled in the forest. Since I was at the library for a meeting, I didn't get to explore any of its collections. However, I loved seeing the long, welcoming entranceway with its bench and wall of plaques. Once I entered, there was a rotunda with a beautiful mural on the ceiling, and smiling staff to greet me. The place was clean and had that familiar smell of old pages and adventures waiting to be read. There were separate study stalls, meeting rooms, a Children's Reading Room, a Computer Room, and a Sun Porch (which is where I planted myself). This library was different than any I have been to, with greenery all around it. It was very peaceful, inside and out. I will definitely be back, and it is a Kiesha Speech-recommended library, for sure. Enjoy!

I have never visited this library before and probably would never visit it if it wasn't for something specific. It's off the beaten path and not something you would easily stumble upon. Needless to say it was a beautiful library. They offer several classes to encourage community bonds and growth. I would definitely visit again.

The Central Library downtown is wonderful. It has a lot of resources for all kinds of users, from movies to a massive kids area. Especially for kids, this is a great place to visit occasionally. It inspires my kids to read more which is difficult to do. They enjoy visiting, looking through all the book options, and checking out their choices. It's also right next to LaBauer park and the children's center so it makes for a great day out together.
