But I had decided to not only to cut my hair short but also get bangs (which everyone voted against). Well, all I can say is this is the best haircut I've ever had. And I've had bangs before and couldn't pull them off and had to wait for them to grow out, so it was a gamble. Gilla explained why she cut them how she did. And she cut them long and cut them shorter as we decided on length together. Same with length of hair she repeatedly asked if cutting this much hair off was ok. Something hair dressers normally take the liberty of. All around best hair cut experience I've had. I'll not only be recommending to locals. But I think I'll be scheduling all my future hair cuts for whenever I'm in Vancouver.

They were so kind (and I'm guessing it was the manager) that they agreed to take me in on such a busy day. Parking was going to be waaaay better than dt. Charmaine was lovely. She spent about an hour and agreed to add some curl to my wavy hair that usually looks frizzy when I do it. Nakry was equally as great, and I felt really lucky to have had both of them style it. Today, my hair is still bouncing with curl and is neither sticky nor stiff. As with all "finds" I was reluctant to write this, except that they were so incredibly wonderful. My stylist was a former Suki's member, which happened to be my former salon. Next time I need my hair cut/coloured, I'm going to give this place a chance. It's classy and the stylists are all nice and cordial. They really made my day! Total cost $48 dollars with over a 20% tip and included a $20 conditioning treatment and scalp massage. So if any man happens to be reading this...now you know why we women expect you to pay for us on a date if we get "dolled" up. It has nothing to do with chivalry or women's lib; little do you know that we've already spent at least $300 before the night has begun.

And let me tell you she did EXACTLY what I wanted.** What I loved about Karen is that I told her exactly my issues and she listened and did what she could to accept it. (unlike other places where they either refute that they are issues and/or decide to not listen) For any other east asian haired ladies, this is usually what I tell my hairdresser (YES, I'm SO low maintenance that I'm actually high maintenance when it comes to a salon- but if i'm paying good money and you are trained well I expect you to listen and do what I say***): -I cut my hair once a year and it NEEDS to grow out well. -I DON'T OWN a comb, conditioner, hair products. I'm strictly a shampoo everyday, airdry and leave the house kinda girl. Styling involves me running my fingers through my hair and sayin, "that's about right.." -If you use a stright iron on my STRAIGHT ASIAN HAIR I will hurt you. -I don't do razors. Just say no if you're even thinking it. C'mon, just use scissors. -I want to avoid altogether the "frizzy triangle" (you know what I'm talkin about) -And I need them to thin out my hair and get as much volume at the crown of my head as possible because I have thick hair, and a lot of it, that easily falls flat at the end of the day (which also coincides with the "frizz triangle") Karen listened and gave me a pretty sweet cut. she double checked with me to see if using conditioner and product was ok with me and she did a really quality job ensuring it looked like how I wanted it. I ended up with some sort of rocker chick, ultra layered, BIG do. Think borderline elvira/ shape of a Q-tip. Haha, I know that isn't the nicest description but it is basically the exact shape I wanted because I will tell you- there IS no such thing as flat or frizzy-triangle with THIS cut. which is EXACTLY what I wanted. My sister got a really clean cut bob- which is also what she wanted. I forget the name of her stylist but she was super cute. Oh, and the shampoo boy (josh?) does a pretty good head massage even though I avoid touching at all costs. (he styles too at cost b/c he's training I think) highly reccommend Karen as a stylist. And, ps: new customers get 25% off NOW pps: they gave my sister 25% off even though she wasn't a new client. This unfortunately isn't the first time I've had an issue with supernova stylists not doing what I asked for. They did resolve it last time but I don't have time to keep coming back when I get my hair done to get it fixed, nor is it good for my hair. My hair also feels like it wasn't washed good enough as it feels like there's still some of the gritty toner or dye in it, not sure which one.

I had booked a hair color appointment weeks in advance for an important family event, my Goddaughter's wedding this weekend in Kelowna. I traveled from Chicago to Vancouver specifically in part for this appointment and paid a 50 percent deposit for a service costing over $500. Yesterday, I received a confirmation reminder emphasizing that cancellations within 24 hours or no shows would result in a non refundable deposit. However, today, only four hours before my appointment, the salon called to cancel on me. I was informed they could not accommodate me with another stylist either. I calmly explained my situation and that I only had today available before leaving for the wedding. The response was essentially that nothing could be done. When I asked to speak with the manager, the staff member rudely refused, said she would "inform the manager," then abruptly ended the call. I understand emergencies and scheduling issues can happen. What was most upsetting was the complete lack of accountability, empathy, professionalism, or effort to help resolve the situation, especially from a salon operating at this price point. A business that strictly enforces cancellation policies on clients should hold itself to the same standard of responsibility and customer care.

Sara's little salon is almost beside my apartment buidling but it took me years to actually go in…read more She runs the salon by herself and often takes a few quick bang trims while I wait for my colour to set. There is a great neighbourhood vibe in this place and people drop by to say hi when they walk by and Sara always has a kind word and a smile for everyone. I have had some nice trims from Sara and she has added streaks for me. SHe even custom mixes North American colours with some she has shipped over from Iran to get something unique for me. She will stay open later if you need her to and is always accessible to her clients. I would recommend Niloo as a friendly, local spot where you are never pushed to buy expensive hair products (in fact, she doesn't even sell them!)

I should note that the Rain Salon is associated with the Chelsea Salon, in the same "Waterfall Building" on 2nd Avenue, at the entrance to Granville Island, under the Granville Bridge. Both salons share some (or all) of the same stylists, but the Chelsea is more geared toward quickie barbershop or clipper cuts, and the aesthetic is more industrial and concrete, and the site is smaller (so, more male clients usually come here), whereas the Rain salon is more feminine in ambiance and is more spacious and lighter. Unfortunately, although our Groupon specified the Rain salon, our stylist, Lindsay, was working out of the Chelsea that afternoon, so we went to the Chelsea. No biggie, but given the choice, it would've been nice to have been seen in the Rain. There's no dedicated parking, but we found metered street parking right away and the rates were surprisingly low (it was early in the evening on a weekday. Perhaps that made a difference?). One issue we had was with the scheduling: our appointment was scheduled for 6pm and we were there ten minutes early. And Lindsay was running late, as she was busy with another client. My kid was finally seen by 6:25-6:30. this might not be a big deal, but a half hour delay on a weeknight, which is a school night (and of course my kid had a TON of homework assigned that night, wouldn't you know it!). So that part wasn't great. But what WAS great was the haircut: my kid was thrilled with Lindsay's handiwork (and my kid balks at getting haircuts and is never happy with any cut or style, ever). I appreciated how Lindsay asked what my kid wanted, and how she spoke directly to my kid, getting to know what she likes and dislikes. And it all really came out GREAT. The Groupon was a terrific deal, and it came with a $20 gift card which we applied to some hair products here (they sell only Bumble & Bumble). They also have a very good referral program here, too (I forget the details but it entailed getting either $20 off or 20% off your services if you are referred by a client). I think this discount would offset the high price of services here (I think they're high, but in reality, they're probably simply competitive to all other better hair salons in the city). We were impressed with the cut and style, and Lindsay was great with my kid, so we'd return.

The first time I did a drastic cut was on my sweet 16th...getting ready to head out to see my…read morefriends, I didn't like the way my hair looked. so i grabbed a pair of scissors and started trimming..my long hair ended up being a cute short thing that ended below my ears-loved it! so i have been cutting my own hair..save maybe 3 or 4 times when i got it professionally done... i have now found my official hair stylist!! this little gem is hidden under the granville st bridge (beside a fantastic little japanese tea cafe!). I met up with Dylan and had such a fantastic talk with him first. I told him I have a very sweaty profession and have absolute zero tolerance for high maintenance do's. but at the same time-im sick of looking at my blah hair..i needed some life back! he washed my hair and delicately massaged my scalp and shoulders..then he started snipping...i have awesome layers that has given my real thick hair life i never knew it had! he somehow found the natural waves in my hair and made the cut to work with it..i have a completely different look without him even shortening the length! (because i grow my hair out every 2 years or so to donate to cancer) he showed me a very simple way to style it so i can keep the curls without being stuck in front of the mirror for 30 mins...and i have been complemented everywhere! even after a sweaty fitness class session! i LOVE it! Dylan is amazing..wish i could put him in my back pocket and take him everywhere i go...well, a girl can dream!
