Everyone told me while in town I had to check out these maple donuts. I will say we got a dozen plus 6 and it was $30!!! I'm from Boston and it would have been $50+ The glazed croissant was fantastic, but i feel that the other donuts including the maple stick was just average. Pretty busy on a Saturday morning with a line out the door but it moved fast and was worth the brief wait! They have a wonderful variety of baked goods and it was hard to choose which one to try because they all looked so yummy and mouth-watering! I ended up ordering the chocolate glazed filled donut and a plain glazed donut; both were 10/10. The doughnut was so fluffy and light and paired perfectly with a cup of coffee. It was bustling and loud inside with no seating but there is some outdoor seating. Definitely more of a grab-and-go spot. I'm not surprised it's such a popular place and I'd come back again in a heartbeat to try more treats! read more

All over Winona people talk about this bakery. I had to stop in to see what the buzz was about. I can confidently say I am still a bit unsure. I arrived on a Friday morning and it was bustling. The way this bakery is designed is with no sitting area and a fast paced almost fast food style. You walk in with tons of baked goods all over (which was exciting there was such variety even if short lived) WITHOUT signs to know what you're ordering. The people behind the counter are hard to hear, the line was huge behind me and thus I was rushed. I said I've never been here to the gal and asked what's -pointed at item- and the woman genuinely looked annoyed. We had a yelling match to figure out what the baked goods were and I hurriedly choose two. This was high stress and confusing as I had no time to look at the baked goods and I was rushed through the line. I panic purchased an apple turnover and an apple glazed donut with apple in the center. I didn't eat the turnover but the donut was delicious. I likely would not return here simply due to the chaotic nature of this place, the lack of signage, and lack of seating. There was no look at the case and get to the register to order -- it was yell at the case and get to the register as fast as possible to move you through. Overall i was disappointed with the vibe as bakeries for me are an enjoyable cozy experience and this was just stressful. read more

Some of the best donuts in the region and one of my favorite ones in the state. Bloedow's donuts have some heft to them but still retain a light and airy texture on the inside. This gives the dough a great chew and texture that I just can't seem to find at other bakeries. These donuts are filling! My favorite is the tried and true maple Long John but I do like their apple cinnamon filled Bismarck with cinnamon icing, that icing is amazing. My buddy I grabbed these with commented how these donuts reminded him of the ones his southern-born grandma used to make, he also mentioned texture and weight and how that's hard to find in a good roll. We do love donuts so when this place popped up in the Winona tourist booklet we knew we had to check it out. Plus there was a coupon for a free donut when you bought one! Fortunately it was mid-week and mid-morning so there were no lines out the door (we saw the warnings). They have a pretty big selection but I was expecting more unusual choices that we have seen in other towns' donut shops. One thing is they do not have any with peanuts (must be an allergy thing). We did get one with maple and bacon, a cruller and a maple long John (or whatever they call them here). They all were good. I was just expecting more given the glowing reviews. read more

My boyfriend and I were staying in Winona for an event in a nearby town and decided to explore while we were there. The minute I googled this town, Bloedow Bakery was one of the first "must-visit" places that popped up. The bakery is family owned and has been around since 1924. It seems like this place is a historical staple of Winona. We had no idea this place existed till about 1 PM, so by the time we got there, there was very little pastries remaining. We got a chance to try their "donut of the day" which was the blueberry filled donut. We also ordered the raspberry filled donut. I was so into the fall season being around the corner and wanted to try their pumpkin bars, but unfortunately, they were all out. The donuts were delicious. You can tell they are homemade by how delicate they are and how they melt in your mouth when you bite into them. I wish we knew about this place earlier, we would have tried so many other things, but either way, if you are ever in the Winona area, this place is a must visit! ~Till next time! read more

Unbelievably solid. All the flavors. Cronut was my favorite if you force me to have another- that's the one I would eat. Went on a summer weekday morning at 10am and there was a line. The line did not extend beyond the door at this point - but the parking lot had more cars than anywhere else in town! Worth the detour! I've been honestly thinking about what it would be like to move to MN. A local told me Krispy Kreme opened a store in town - that wasn't successful cuz Customers were so loyal. Donuts are one of my favorite foods, so I had to stop here during a recent trip to Winona, and Bloedow does not disappoint. My only gripe, which is why I'm only giving 4 stars, is that none of the items are labeled. We had several other people in waiting with us in the bakery, and I felt pressure to choose but I didn't know what a lot of the items were. Best donuts period! WCCO rates this place as the best in Minnesota and I agree. You WILL NOT find a better donut and if you want one you better get there early. Especially on Saturday! The maple long johns are the first to sell out followed by the Glazed circle of delight! Word has it that they are still made the same way they were when the placed opened. Which means they must use lard. Some donuts you can only buy on certain days so plan ahead. Lucky the bacon maple long john has worked up to an everyday delight. The salty bacon and the sweet maple are a great combination. I almost forgot they sell other bakery products which are just as good. If you are in Winona, I would strongly recommend you have one and maybe you can prove me wrong. I doubt it on this one. read more

This place is amazing! They do all different styles of doughnuts, pastries, scones, cookies, loafs of bread and more. It is always amazing and always fresh. We love their doughnuts a d fresh bread. My family has been coming here for almost 60+ years, that's four generations. Now I'm bringing my children. 5 solid stars. It feels bizarre reviewing a place that I have been going to, on and off, for 16 years. When I moved away for good, 6 years ago, I haven't been able to find anything quite the same as Bloedow's. You know what they say, you don't appreciate things when you have them. You only miss them when they're gone. The same is true for Bloedow's. The Maple Long John is the most famous donut of all. A few years ago they started making them with Bacon on top. Just when I thought you couldn't improve perfection, Bloedow's proved me wrong. They sell out of these real fast. Get them while you can. Early is best, but I've rocked up at 12 noon and they pulled a fresh pan out of the back and into the case. (cue Mozart's Serenade No. 13 in G Major) My other favorite things are the simple and delicious sugar Glazed. We also love the chocolate frosted Cake donuts, cinnamon bear claws and their cookies and cupcakes are good too! If you are in town for a BBQ, get a bag of their fresh hamburger or hot-dog buns. They are out of this world! Prepare for battle in the line. On Saturday mornings, the line goes right down Broadway Street into downtown Winona. Just kidding, not that far. But almost. I find every excuse possible to visit my parents or my in-laws, just so I can stop at Bloedow's. This is not a joke. I make the (almost) 3 hour drive from Minneapolis / St. Paul just so I can sink my teeth into Maple Long Johns and Glazed sugar donuts. Just when you thought you couldn't get anything better, the bill at the end shocks you with how inexpensive this place is. Some donuts are less than a dollar. I paid around $8 for 9 doughnuts. I easily dropped $25 on a box of delights in Minneapolis. But I am not ashamed of that. The Big City has hardened me to how much things cost. Winona has that small town charm, nicely priced box of goodies, and when we leave it's happy kid and happy husband. Yes, I use donut and doughnut interchangeably.
