Stopped here for an afternoon pick-me-up and was not disappointed! Apparently baker Jen has been a Food Network baking champion three times?! When we saw that sign we had to stop in. A handful of options to pick from, and I loved seeing two GF options. I got the brownie cookie, and it was fabulous! For beverages I got chai - it wasn't very warm and only filled 3/4 way, so I had to go back and ask them to fill the rest with hot water. My partner got a pumpkin cold brew and he loved it! He picked a vanilla sprinkles cupcake - there was only one left, and he was pretty bummed: it was stale and pretty flavorless. Since I was planning to visit La Crosse, a stop at Meringue Bakery was #1 on my must-see list. I really wanted to try one of Jen's famous cakes, so I pre-ordered a 4" 4-layer almond flavored white cake with buttercream and raspberry jam filling. Oh. My. Goodness. We stopped here for a mid afternoon treat passing through La Crosse and it did not disappoint. We figured we had to get the lemon meringue tart if the bakery was named Meringue and we did NOT regret it. It was beautiful- both texture and flavor. Very tasty and well-balanced. Would definitely get again!! We also tried the chocolate chip cookie which was great mix of crunch and chewiness AND it had sea salt on which is a small touch that I love! Although we did not eat inside, the place was decorated very cute and on brand with a delicious bakery. Masks are worn inside and they have up sneeze guards on the counter for ordering. I only noticed this bakery because I pass by it each morning when I head into work. I really wanted to try out their baked goods because they looked amazing and I love supporting local businesses. We decided to stop in Sunday mid-morning to check out what they had to offer. Inside the bakery there was a very chill vibe, it was quaint, and an overall cute place. They have a few outdoor seating options and a few tables inside if you want to stay for a while. They offered coffee drinks and café items (e.g. sandwiches, paninis, quiche, etc...) if you wanted a quick bite. We ordered everything to-go, and got their jumbo chocolate and sea salt cookie, strawberry danish, orange-passionfruit French macaron, and morning bun. The cookie was very rich, almost too rich, and we could not finish it even between the two of us, it was good, but not my favorite. The danish was tasty, the filling had fresh strawberries slices on it which was an excellent touch in my opinion, however, the pastry was a bit too dry. The macaron was very light, and fluffy, and not too sweet, which was much appreciated. Mostly the orange flavor came through and I didn't taste much of the passionfruit, but it was still very good. We both agreed that the morning bun was our favorite item. It was flaky, but not dry, had the right amount of sweetness, and the cinnamon was not too overpowering. I can see why it's so popular. I stopped again later that week for a quick bite. I ordered their Greek feta quiche. It was pretty tasty and seasoned well. The pastry was flaky and not dry. The filling was cheesy, rich, and creamy. The tomatoes added a nice pop of acidity to balance and round out the flavors. The quiche came with a mixed greens salad topped with fresh strawberries and a side of balsamic vinaigrette, the salad was just okay. Overall though, it was a pretty good lunch. Because this bakery is located in the middle of downtown, you will have to find street parking or park in a parking structure. If you're ever in downtown this place is worth a visit if you are feeling peckish, or want to rest your feet for a bit, I'd recommend it. read more

Not only that, they were able to accommodate several allergies to create this masterpiece vegan and gluten free! I ordered a single slice of German chocolate cake to-go. $8 plus tax. Ouch! Took it home for later. One bite and it went into the garbage. The cake was dry. German chocolate has a cooked coconut gooey filling. This had a dry, very large cut dried coconut that was crunchy. The frosting was same-old type, not what I should expect on this cake or from a specialty bakery. Too bad. read more

The desserts are insane at Meringue!! I've had the pleasure to enjoy baked goods in more than 45 states here in the US, and then in many countries around the world. This quaint spot in La Crosse is in my TOP 3 -- globally. I've never bought 1 slice of cake, I get at least 3....and also take a whole cake out of the case as well. The European buttercream is ever so light and delicious it melts in your mouth. The flavor profiles are incredible. They do a fantastic job with fruit curds! Don't walk here - RUN!!! The service here was AWFUL. I waited 25 minutes to get the wrong size and flavor ice coffee and tea. To remedy the coffee, they poured the 12 oz serving in 24 oz cup and added more ice. That's not to mention it was sweetened when I asked for non sweet. The tea was also the wrong size and required them to rebrew more (adding additional time to my stay). While I waited, I watched one couple walk out because the line didn't move at all for 15 minutes, and I watched one poor woman get the wrong drink TWICE! I ordered the gluten free chocolate cherry balsamic cake. I chose the Monet decorations (minus the macarons) from their look book. It was beautiful and one of the best cakes I've ever had. The edible sign was excellent quality chocolate. The cake was moist and melted in my mouth. My favorite part was the buttercream frosting. It was smooth, only slightly sweet and so creamy. Very very good food. However, the service needs some serious attention. Quick recap of our last few experiences. 1. Wife and I both ordered the same meal and paid at the counter. We were the only ones in the restaurant. Wife's food came out. Waited 10 minutes and still hadn't seen my food. Appeared like they were working in the back so we gave it another 5 minutes. Finally went to the counter and they forgot to make the order. I can understand, things happen. 2. We call ahead to order for pick up. They give us a time. We show up right at the time provided. They had not started the order. 3. Wanted to give it another shot. Went online on a Saturday to see what time they opened. Figured we would skip the call ahead and just go order in person. Store hours for weekends are listed as 7:30-3:30 on google for Saturday's. Got there at 8:15, they don't open until 9 so we decided we would go Sunday. 4. Sunday we call ahead to check what time they open and to put an order in. They said they open at 9. We put our order in. We show up around 9:15 and they hadn't started the order yet. I'm in the car while my wife is inside waiting. 9:35 and still no food. Giving two stars because the food is so good. Service not so much. read more

I came here to pick up a to-go lunch. Over the past year i have ordered cakes from this bakery but this is my first time trying the food. Like everyone says the menu is not too large and everything is pretty rich. I got the ham and cheese on foccicia and the Greek quiche along with the soup which was coconut on my visit. Additionally i got what was listed as the couscous salad but really was quinoa. Everything was very good and very heavy, while I was there u got the malted milk chocolate cake which was really the crown jewel for me! And i additionally got a chocolate tart that was also loved dearly. The listed menu vs what is actually there from an ingredient standpoint is subject to change so check in with them, the staff was very helpful. It's pricy... all of this came out to close to $50 but the portion sizes are decent and the taste is really good. I hope they will branch out and make some more options for sandwiches. If I could give it a zero star I would. We had ordered a very beautiful wedding cake that we had seen on the website we changed one small detail. We changed it from gold to silver but we wanted it to look exactly the same! They didn't communicate with us about anything after we ordered the cake. We picked up the cake, they didn't even show us it to see if it was what we wanted. Once again zero communication!!!....We got it home and noticed that they didn't put the pearls on the bottom of the cake, as you can see there is craking, and there should also be a second flower on top. There should be white pearls inside the flowers....not silver!!! Its as if they ran out of white pearls, "ohhh they wont even notice this giant glop of crap in the center of the flower". It also didnt taste fresh it was so hard and dry, as if it had been frozen for a while. Honestly I would never go here again.. when you spend alot of money you expect to get what you paid for. My husband and I went to the coffee shop "Bean Juice" and we had a Meringue cupcake. It was one of the best tasting cakes I have ever tried. Since then we have gone twice, directly to the Meringue bakery, to get cupcakes. The frosting is always delicious, but the cake part of the cupcakes are as dry as Death Valley. The first time it was dry, we thought it was a fluke. This last time, at four dollars a small cupcake, we were thoroughly disgusted. We purchased them on a Saturday, thinking that people buy bakery goods on weekends and it might be different. Hopefully it would be fresh. Nope. The cupcakes are beautiful on the outside, but just like cheerleaders in high school, terrible on the inside. I won't be back. read more

I stopped at Meringue bakery yesterday and they put together the best picnic that we have ever had! They don't have a HUGE choice on the menu, but everything that we had was terrific. Jennifer Barney, the owner and winner of some of the FoodTV's baking contests, was there yesterday, and she came out immediately to greet me personally. I explained to her my need for a picnic supper for four of us, and I also shared that we hadn't tried anything from her new café menu yet. She suggested that we have all of the sandwiches put on croissants, instead of bread, and she instructed the assistants to line the rolls with spinach so that things wouldn't get soggy. That's just the kind of top-notch service that you can expect at Meringue! I also ordered slices of two different types of cakes that were in her bakery case, and when I got home, I divided the cakes so that the four of us could have a taste of each. Both were good, but it was a little bit too hot outside for the balsamic chocolate... It tasted great but it was just a little heavy for the evening's weather. The lavender blackberry cake, however, was out of this world! Moist cake with a very mid level sweet frosting...maybe Italian buttercream...? It was perfect for a hot night! Jennifer agreed with all my choices, naturally, but she did suggest that perhaps the shortbread cookies would travel better to the picnic. They were packaged and on the shelf in the bakery, so normally I might have purchased them for my family and me, but not for guests. What a mistake that would have been! I might even say that those shortbread bars, crusted with sugar on top, were the hit of the whole evening! To be honest, one of those fabulous croissants filled with an unusual but delicious chicken salad, and then finished off with the lavender cake or the shortbread cookie would have been a perfect meal! This café just opened at exactly the time that the quarantine started, so normally I might say that her timing could've been better. However, at 12:30 yesterday afternoon, the line was socially distanced but FULL. And I would say that's got to be a reflection of the taste and quality of what they offer on their menu.
