If you know me, you know I'm a serious plant collector with a collection full of rare tropicals, so whenever I check out a plant shop, I'm looking for two things: knowledge and selection. Bloomers in Elgin delivered on both. The staff was super friendly, welcoming, and actually knowledgeable about their plants (which makes a huge difference when you're hunting for anything uncommon). They were willing to answer questions and you can tell they genuinely love what they do. Their rare plant selection is dope. There were so many unique plants to choose from, and even what they consider their "regular houseplant section" had plants you honestly won't find at most other shops in Central Texas. I found myself doing multiple laps because I kept spotting things I missed the first time. The greenhouse setup was beautiful and well organized, and you can tell they take pride in the health of their inventory. If you're new to plants, a seasoned collector, or somewhere in between, this place is absolutely worth the trip. 10/10 recommend. Will definitely be back. read more

If your into plants, or just looking for a plant for the first time- this place IS for you! so many in and outdoor plants avaliable with a fabulous selection! they also have supplies inside the checkout area! there was one person there running the place when we went ( we were also the only people there) he was kind for our short interaction with him. Not too far from Austin lies the stunning Bloomers Garden Center! It is the perfect place to spend on Sunday with a local coffee perusing their selection of rare plants, tropicals, succulents, and outside landscaping selections (including so many fruit trees!). Their prices are great! They don't have a huge selection of Hoyas, but their greenhouse is similarly sized to Great Outdoors with a LOT of rare options like Strawberry Shakes, Monstera Albos, and anthuriums. Make sure to grab a staff member to tour their rare plants section where you'll also see how they propagate some of their plants! The lot can fill up quick on the weekends so come early!! read more

I visit Bloomers at least once a week. When I first started going there I felt like the selection was limited. It was about six years ago so maybe my memory is failing me. I do remember everyone always being very helpful. There is always someone out on the grounds to assist with questions or direction. This place has MANY MANY items for your horticultural and botanical needs. Potting medium, house plants, succulents, pots, landscape decor, trees/saplings, outdoor plants, health/medicinal plants, food plants. They have it all. If you don't live close, make the drive one weekend and check them out! You can even call ahead to ask if they have what you are looking for. I highly suggest just making the drive. We moved from an apartment in Austin to a new house in Elgin in November 2010, and spent the next three months making several trips per weekend to the big box stores we knew along I-35 as we worked on our new yard. In March, one of the staff at the garden center in Home Depot asked under his breath why we were making such a long trip for mediocre products when we could be visiting Marcus at Bloomers in Elgin. Needless to say, we promptly made a visit, and were incredibly pleased with what we found. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, the plant selection is varied and charmingly displayed among meandering trails, and they offer free seminars to those of us who are gardening newbies. Beautiful flowers and gorgeous leafy plants were arranged artfully and provided us with some amazing inspiration for several other outdoor projects. Our 432 sq ft vegetable garden (we freely admit we were overambitious) went from a sad and wilted mess to delightfully green and thriving, thanks to some advice from Marcus Young (try the cotton burr compost--it's miraculous!). This weekend we attended the "square food gardening" seminar (look it up, it's really interesting!) and left with ideas for the next planting season. We also met several other couples in the area who share an interest in gardening and who were excited to invite us to their gardening group. Before we left, we managed to accumulate a truckload of perennials and a giant planter to brighten our previously dismal front yard. I LOVE Bloomer's! I have lived in Elgin for about 6 1/2 years and did not know about it until a few years ago, when I started getting into gardening. Every year, their selection seems to get better and better! I love that everything they sell is organic. They have a wide range of vegetables, herbs, flowers, shrubs, trees - basically everything! The staff is very knowledgeable and Marcus, the owner, has been on Central Texas Gardener. They teach classes every Saturday morning. For instance, this past Saturday was how to install a disappearing fountain. I haven't made it to one of the classes yet - they are at 9:30 am, which is a little early for me on a Saturday morning. :) I would go to Bloomer's every day, if I had the money to do so. That's not to say that they are pricey, because they are not. They have great prices! I'm just po'. Please know that I create this review with a heavy heart... Over the years I made many visits and spent a lot of my money at Bloomers Garden Center here in Elgin, TX. Never had a bad experience and have always felt welcomed by those that work there. Today's experience was of a different sort. Both shocking and most embarrassing!! I saw my elderly Army veteran neighbor in the front yard this morning. He asked if I knew where he could purchase flowers for his wife as they are celebrating their 42-wedding anniversary. I replied with a "sure (in an excited voice), come on, I'll drive you to Bloomers!!" During the 10-minute drive, I congratulated him on their anniversary and raved about what he might find for his wife at Bloomers, he mentioned that he had never been to Bloomers and was excited to see what they had in stock. We looked around for a while not locating what he was searching for so we went inside and asked an employee where we could find a specific plant. The young man was very pleasant and helpful. - Thank you, young man! My neighbor chose a plant to present to his wife and we walked back up to the counter to make the purchase. My neighbor placed the plant on top of the counter. I asked the young man when they expect to have a certain plant in stock. As he was answering my question an older woman walks behind the counter. I motioned to my neighbor to step up to the counter to complete his transaction. The older woman then held up her hand pointing her finger at my neighbor and said "No, you were in that line first". THERE WERE NO LINES - We were the only two people standing at the counter!!!! Note: I am a white woman, and my neighbor is an African American male. The young man stopped answering and we all looked at her, and each other, in disbelief. I think we were all in shock - to include the young man (employee). I then saw the look on my neighbors' face as he stepped back away from the counter. Immediately I felt disgust and anger over the heartless actions of that women! Regretfully, I just looked at her - The young man then changed his focus and rang my neighbors' purchase. My neighbor and I left without incident. These types of actions hurt us (our fellowship/community), and I could not stop thinking about how blatantly cruel, unjust, disrespectful, and bigoted this woman was to my neighbor. I kept thinking that I had to do something. I could not let this go without reporting it to management (something)! So, I returned to Bloomers in the afternoon thinking that I would report the employee's actions to management. When I walked in the same older women, with a smile on her face and a cordial demeanor, asked if she could help me. Mind you there were no smiles nor did she have a cordial demeanor when my neighbor and I were there earlier in the day. I asked to speak with management and she then explained that she was the owner. defensively she stated that she did not recognize me nor remember my neighbor or I from earlier in the day, that I must have misunderstood!!! There was no misunderstanding as we were the only two customers at the counter!!! Never again will I shop at Bloomers in Elgin, TX!! read more

This place needs more love. I regularly rive here from College Station because the nurseries where I live all suck. Bloomers doesn't suck. They get in an enormous variety of heirloom veggies. They have fruit trees and shrubs that actually grow here (unlike big box stores). They have an incredible variety of flowers, herbs, hanging baskets, tropical stuff. Bloomers is an incredible source of plants you won't find other places and the plants are healthy! Marcos can give you information about growing everything, fighting pests, and picking out plants that are right for your project . Plus his staff, including his kids, are very helpful and well informed. Such a pleasant experience beyond just the array of plants there is the beautiful landscaping, Koi pond, in season gardens and fantastic pottery. *If you come during one of their special events you might even get to see Marcos and his band play. read more
