Unfortunately BPD has changed dramatically. My mother's headstone was stolen from the cemetery by the monuments company who installed it. We had taken Life Monuments to court due to breach of contract. We won, but had not recieved our money back. While fighting to get our money back we started following legal steps through Essex county courts which in turn pissed the monument place off. In retaliation, Life Monuments stole the stone off my mother's grave and still had our money. We immediately called BPD to report the theft. We even had a witness, the grounds worker at the cemetery, verify that Life Monuments stole the headstone. Well no arrest was made. The detective on the case decided it was a civil matter, which after consulting with a lawyer, was a lie. He brokered a deal with Life Monuments instead of following the law. The unprofessional treatment we received from BPD left a bad taste in our mouth. If your package from Amazon gets stolen off your front porch the BPD are all over it, but if someone steals a headstone and dececrates a loved ones grave, it's taken lightly. I had a fantastic experience here recently! I know that most people do not have a great experience with Police, but I did. Recently someone went 30 through a stop sign and hit my car. The officer who responded to the call was wonderful. Very pleasant! I had to come to the PD to pick up the police report to go through her insurance. As soon as I waked through the door, several officers greeted me very friendly! I was directed to a window on the right hand side. I feel so bad for the lady that worked behind that window. I really dislike describing people in non positive ways, but she was a more mature lady walking with a cane and a limp. She walked around so slowly, I felt my heart breaking watching her walk to and from the window. She retrieved my report, took her 5 minutes, again felt so bad! It cost $2... For 2 pieces of paper... LOL! I didn't really care... I do not know why they charge for these things... As I was waiting for the report, a woman walked in with a box of toys for a toy drive, I then saw 3 officers run out to not only get the door for her, but help her with the boxes. I know people complain about police all the time, but these officers were so nice! All in all, everyone is super friendly! Great PD. read more

I wish you guys would have been able to see the full video; this place looks like 1968 threw up inside this building. It looks modern on the outside, yet prehistoric on the inside. It's a handicaps nightmare. The building appears to be handicap accessible; it does have a ramp, it has the button to open the door, but it only opens the first door and not the 2nd. Now here's the biggie, Yes they have an elevator, according to their standards, but what they call an elevator I call a dumb waiter inside a closet door. The elevator door looks like a closet door,it has a typed sign that says "one person at a time", it has a tiny wheelchair ramp. Once inside this contraction you are not fully closed in, you can see the upstairs area. The floors are dirty, There's mountain of dust for years. The worst part of it all is that it is unsafe, I got stuck in this contraction. Now I know it sounds like I'm really trashing the place, but that's really not my intent. My intent is to place a picture of what I went through in an attempt to pay a ticket. While the building is a hot mess & 1/2, the staff was cordial. I'm appreciative to the officer who help me out of the so called elevator. Keep in my mind I only used it because I broke my foot and could not do stairs. The municipality of Bloomfield should be ashamed of themselves, they charge a huge amount of money for bogus tickets, yet they fail to put the money back into the system. If you think I'm being extra hard, take a tour of the Bloomfield Headquarter Building to check out this elevator. What a shame!!!! Smh! read more

A few weeks ago, I was involved in a tiny fender bender as I was pulling into my apartment complex. Because I was the one actually doing the driving (the guy in his parked car opened his door into my car), I got "assigned" the job of calling the police - at least I think I did. I couldn't tell over all the yelling. So I go online on my celly and look for a number for them. I tried it and the number doesn't work. So I call information. This whole time, the other driver is still yelling at me and let me tell you, it's so hard to hear someone on your bluetooth when someone is yelling in your other ear, but that's a whole different story. So the number that I get transferred to someone picks up. "Chief of Police so and so speaking." or at least that's what it sounds like over the other driver's yelling. "Hi, yes. I got into an accident and I need an officer to the scene." "I don't have time for this. Call this number." He rattled off a string of numbers at the speed an auctionier would auction off a painting. Good thing I had my pencil and paper ready or else I really would've been in trouble! I tried calling the new number and I get a message recording telling me that the number has changed, but just dial these 3 new numbers in front, but the same last 4 digit numbers. But the "new" number is not in service. Over and over and over again I tried. There comes a time when you just give up. So I sat in my car talking to my cat Chester (who I was bringing home from the vet). The other driver must've finally got in contact with the police after talking to his possee that came out to watch the whole spectacle that was me. Suddenly there was an officer of the law at the scene. He did the "Ok, what happened" and went into his car with all of our information. Thinking that the cause was quite obvious (my front bumper was PUNCTURED which indicated it wasn't just my car hitting this guy's door - there was more to it) I didn't think I had to say much. With what little I DID say, the officer managed to reword it so that the accident report doesn't tell my side at all! But I mean, "I don't have the time to deal with this." Um....are you NOT part of my town's public service. Is it NOT your job to respond? If not, at least help me out! I mean, how hard is it to call the dispatcher and tell them to send someone or even just to transfer me to a dispatcher! Methinks I should've just called 911 and told them it was an emergency. That's the only way you'll get them there pronto with no B.S. filler. Ugh. read more

The public bathroom is a mess. The officer manning the metal detector let me through even though I set it off, so I guess I look trustworthy. I was sitting outside the court waiting for something in another room, and overheard one of the desk people refer to someone else repeatedly as a retard. That's not nice at all. read more

Let me preamble my story with some facts: the median income of a Bloomfield Policeman is $90,000 - one of the highestin the country. This from the Star Ledger. I had just paid my quarterly Real Estate taxes of $5,000 plus. In the course of getting a Disability Placard which allows me to park in a Disability slot, I had this experience with the Traffic Department. I am 82 years old, partially blind and a collection of medical problems that are usually associated with the age. I have been a home owning resident since the 1950's and a resident for more than 80 years. When I went to pick up the placard, the Commander of the division who was not up on the requirements kept looking for reasons why he should not issue the placard. But i persisted in demanding my right to have one and he finally relented. But to get there, I had to endure his bully behavior threatening to put me out of the building because I was disorderly. As he handed the placard to his subordinate, he commanded that he give it to me and to get me out of the building. Then he warned me that he was going to check out the rules which he knew would support his interpretation and that I could expect the Police to show up at my door. I am in the process of writing a complaint the the Chief of Police and my Councilman. I never asked the police for anything before and for all the taxes I have paid to the town, I expected to be treated at least with the same amount of courtesy and respect that I get from Walmart. read more

This place is horrific. They are on their phones just having conversation meanwhile there will be a long line of people waiting to get police reports, coming in to ask questions, some to actually file a police report and there is a long line... ALWAYS. This is horrible, no these people do not work in retail so i don't expect them to know that you should never have a line that's crowding up the place yet I expect them to know that the only reason they have jobs is because they are supposed to serve the people.
