I visited on a warm weekday afternoon between Christmas and New Years and saw only a few other folks out on the trail. There's a big loop that's about 1.5 miles, or you could do a shorter loop. The trail is mostly shaded and quite flat, making it an easy stroll and accessible for kids (including strollers) and people who need low intensity hikes; there are many benches along the way. Many parts are wooden bridges out over the marshland; at the right time of day you can see fiddler crabs in the water. (If it's recently rained, don't go at high tide; parts of the trail may be wet or muddy!) You'll find a really nice variety of trees and micro climates- the grasses and small trees in the marsh land are quite different from the hardwood forests and pines just a few feet further inland. This trail would be especially lovely at sunrise or sunset. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the Emerald Isle/Swansboro area!

Similar to other kayak tours I've done, we were fitted with PFDs and given a basic tutorial on how to paddle/ maneuver in the kayaks. The owner/guide Don was very knowledgable and did a great job making sure that the group moved together and that we were safe at all times. After kayaking around the river we stopped off for a picnic dinner on Shark Tooth Island. It was fun hunting for fossilized shark teeth and other shells. My two criticisms of the tour were: 1) There wasn't much to see. We kayaked a little way down the river and then turned down a grassy side channel. Besides a couple of herons in trees and some alligator tracks there was not much scenery and it became boring after a little while. 2) The food options for dinner were a little underwhelming. They had some store bought sandwich thins/wraps and deli cold cuts for dinner. Without the Groupon the price of the 3 hour tour is $150/per person. I didn't feel that this tour was much of an "adventure" and the food definitely left something to be desired.

In the past, we have rented kayaks from Pogie's and have always loved renting through them. Pogie's was AMAZING to work with both during this trip and in the past. The worst place you could possibly choose on a "vacation". Today we were taken out with insane…read morewinds, rip currents, and a "tour guide" that was too pre-occupied with his Instagram and Snapchat than the group. I was about 30 minutes behind the group by myself nearly the entire time. It was the most challenging trip any of us (11 of us) have ever been on. The entire trip was a struggle and most of us suffered. We wholeheartedly believe we shouldn't have been taken out that day and I think the company was more concerned with making money than our safety. At one point my mother in law couldn't go any further and the "guide", tanner, was so far ahead that he had no clue anyone was behind and struggling. She was exhausted, worried that she'd have a heart stroke, and unable to move forward. One of us had to paddle up to let this incompetent "guide" to help her. He didn't have a tow rope, in fact, I'm not even sure what the point of him being there was. For half of the trip the current and winds were so strong that we were paddling and still moving backwards. It was irresponsible for them to allow us to go out. When Tanner was confronted by the group he quite literally said "but I checked the internet and it said the winds were 10mph". This company DOES NOT test the water before taking a massive group of beginners. At the very least he should have found a route that wasn't AGAINST the wind and current the entire time. If I could give them 0 stars I absolutely would. Unbelievable. Go to the place across the street instead.
