La Chiva was the first beach we visited while in Vieques. I cannot even describe it's beauty and peacefulness. White sands, turquoise water, calm waves, beautiful Palmetto trees.....heavenly! The best part was having it to ourselves for several amazing hours until just a few more people showed up. What an incredible way to start a vacation in Vieques. Pack a lunch, pack some snorkel gear, and pack some beer because you'll want to stay all day at this pristine Caribbean paradise!

Great beach to visit it's in a national park as you go down the long road leading to the beach there are lots of horses and animals you may see is definitely keep driving down because the water is more blue you drive down this long road to different sections which are labeled and provide parking I was at beach #9 we parked are car (which didn't get stuck, I was worried because of the sand but it's shallower than you look so you'll be fine!) the beach is really beautiful. It's not the bluest beach you'll find and definitely bring some snorkelers and bug spray. I don't burn but I'd bring some some sunscreen if you do. It's really worth it. The farther you go the bluer it gets amd there's little picnic tables with shade too but I'd also bring some beach chairs. Your gonna wanna stay the whole Day so bring some snacks and a cooler for some fresh beer! It's amazing view just clean up after yourself for the wild life.

In A Nutshell: -Blue Beach was recently ranked as the 14th Most Beautiful Beach in the world by Conde Nast. -This beach sums up the island of Vieques perfectly: isolated, calm & beautiful water. -You take a bumpy road through the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge. -It's possible to take a scooter here, I did it. -There are only 21 tiny turn-offs that allow you to access this beach. -You get total privacy, breath-taking views and QUIET. Overall, this is a great beach FAR AWAY from tourists!

What would you wish for if you were stranded on a deserted Island? Beautiful Scenery? Hot & Sunny Weather? Cool, Clear, & Blue Waters? Well, you don't have to imagine too hard about being on a deserted island on Bahia La Chiva (aka Blue Beach). This long stretch of coastline will give you your own personal paradise. At just a few steps from your parking spot, you can easily have your secluded paradise. This was my favorite beach on Vieques. It didn't get the good press as other beaches (such as Secret [http://www.yelp.com/biz/secret-beach-pata-prieta-vieques#hrid:WgacGlsPGt6b8PmVqH83_Q ] & Red [http://www.yelp.com/biz/red-beach-playa-caracas-vieques#hrid:ZFCIdzIBlQ6FLVox6HDrHQ ]), but I think this stretch of sand and water was my favorite. The Beach is massive, and there is a road which parallels the coast line, but you wouldn't know that by the vegetation between the road and water. On the road, we noticed side roads every few hundred feet (each with a numbered sign, such as "8", "7", "6", etc.). On a whim, and out of curiosity, we tried one of the first side routes we found. Unfortunately, the bogs of muddy water were too much for our little scooter, and we were turned away; we found this same result on a second turn out, too. But then on a later road, we only had to drive a few hundred feet, and there we were. Face to face with the cool Caribbean. As we walked a few paces to the beach, we came across a dwarf/baby palm tree. I plopped my beach towel here, and proclaimed this patch of sand the new Country of Corey. This was our most secluded beach of our Vieques Beach tour. The nearest people to us were several football fields away. There was a yacht just off shore, but it left after a while. There is a small tropical island a few hundred feet out---if I were daring (and a pirate), I would have swam out there in search of buried treasure. But there was plenty to do on this beach: lay down under the sun, read a book, listen to the rhythmic blue & white waves, swim in the refreshing cool waters. This beach has it all, and will be what I think about most when I think back on Vieques. A perfect 5-stars for this beach.

Love this beach!!! Check out the pictures they speak for themselves! We went on a week day in Feb and there were maybe 5-6 other people on the beach total. White sand, warm water, warm breeze. Just amazing! A couple of things to note. 1. You gotta rent a jeep to be able to get out there. 2. You can't taxi out there. There's no cel reception 3. This is a US state park but there are not rangers or staff around. 4. No services what so ever and the closest store is like an hour away. 5. See #4 bring everything you need 6. White sand, warm water, awesome place! This is on the Caribbean side of the island.

Bahia de la Chiva/Blue Beach now shares the #1 spot in my book with Fernando do Soronha in Brazil !!! Miles and miles of green shallow clear waters then drops to the deep blue caribbean sea ! You can paddle board for miles then surf back to the shore -- and start all over again. Like Fernando do Soronha, there are no food/beverages vendors, so bring what you need. Rent a car (which costs $60/day - -expensive !!! --- or take any of the numerous taxis that line up along the ferry terminal. I paid $15 bucks one way and those drivers are so willing to do the pick up if you agree on a time. Mine did at 5pm on the dot, very friendly and even showed me how to do the batchata --- the island dance move !

The beach is a postcard. There is nothing more to say. Sit back, have a beer, snorkel and enjoy.

Best beach on the island. Go down as far as you can before you park. Basically a private beach to yourself.

I kept thinking Blue Beach was my favorite, but upon reflection, I truly think Silver was. The pristine white sands and turquoise Caribbean waters were good for the soul. My favorite part was being able to walk quite far out into the gentle warm waves on soft white sand and still be standing with water neck high. The highlight of the vacation was getting to try so many beaches, from the western side of Green Beach, to the most eastern public beach of Silver Beach. I could have easily stayed there forever , prompting a Silver Alert...you can find me at Silver! Pack a picnic and sunscreen. Thank me later.

It's totally worth the extra few minutes drive though. It's not well marked on the Vieques tourist map - its marked as 'platita'. Like most of the beaches this one has no services at all. And like all the beaches its a quick walk from the car, through the mangroves to the sand. The times we have been there it's never been crowded - like maybe a dozen people over a 1/2 mile long beach. This beach has the whitest sand of any of the beaches you can get to on Vieques. In addition to this, there is a small beach where some locals have stacked up some pretty cool rocks. When you first get there, it looks like this small beach is kinda far and you have to swim. Not the case. The water is hip deep and you can walk wade over to the little beach. The beach its self it flat & shallow, no real waves, the water seems to be a little warmer because of how shallow it is, good for snorkeling, good for kids. A must see if you are going to the beaches in Vieques. Orchid Beach / Playa La Plata GPS: 18.117971, -65.375744

For most of the trip you are on paved roads, but for Secret Beach (also known as Pata Prieta), we had to stray off the paved path---a good thing. The main dirt road wasn't too bad, but then we had to turn of this road on to a smaller dirt road. This one was a little more potholed, had quite a few big rocks on it, and steep at times. I maneuvered around the rocks like Han Solo on his Millennium Falcon in an astroid field. It was an adventure just getting to Secret Beach. The parking area is at the bottom of a steep stretch of road. The lot is primitive & fairly small. I've been told that you should leave your vehicle unlocked, so that if someone is going to beak into your car, they don't have to break the window----we had a scooter, so that wasn't an issue. From the parking lot, one walks around a signed gate, and takes a short stroll to the beach. Now given its namesake, I was picturing a totally empty beach, but we saw quite a few groups here. But it wasn't super crowded, and we were definitely able to plant ourselves on a nice patch of sand out of earshot of our neighbors. The beach really is nice in that it's a small "C-shaped" cove. The sand of the beach is white and soft. The waves are fairly small and break right on the beach. This place is your mental image of a tropical beach paradise. Swimming is nice here with not many rocks/coral to worry about. I noticed on a neighboring cove west that there were more rocks. This is where most of the snorkelers were. So yeah, I wouldn't say Secret Beach is a total secret, but I'd say it's definitely worth the rough road. A solid 4.5 stars.

We definitely want to protect and preserve the best (literally) bioluminescent bay in the world, right? So yeah, you can only visit through tour groups. The one-hour tours will definitely feel too short (cries), and you're not allowed to get into the water. Our guide told us that swimming was prohibited since (I think) 2008? I forget the exact year she said. Anyway, some tips if you want them: 1. DEFINITELY only choose tours that use clear-bottom kayaks! Trust me, seeing the water light up and streak along the bottom of the boat was like mini galaxies exploding. It reminded me of the Disney Space Mountain ride. You are missing out if you don't do this. 2. Try to go at or around new moon. Although, even if it's full moon, I'm not sure if this matters if the moon doesn't appear until, say, well after midnight anyway? Hmm... 3. The tours are popular, especially around new moon, so book early! 4. wear water shoes. The walk from land to the kayak in water was sandy and rough on the feet. 5. look for fast streaks of light in the water; those are the fish darting around, super cool to see!! 6. our guide did mention that while this place has bioluminescence year-round, the maximum activity is during summer months. Do what you will with that. This was definitely highlight in our Puerto Rico trip!

It has two main beaches, Tortuga Beach and Playa del Sur (South Beach). Tortuga Beach is by far the more popular beach. Many consider it to be Puerto Rico's best beach. I love Flamenco Beach, but I won't argue with Tortuga's beauty. It also has a natural pool. Playa del Sur is great in its own right. It is smaller and has less beach, but I find it has better snorkeling. It is also more secluded and quieter. Tortuga Beach's biggest problem is it is so popular it can get too crowded. Unless, you have no other option, I would say suggest avoiding this beach on the weekends and holidays. It becomes a marina, so many boats. That also means somebody is more than likely to fill the air with music blasting from their stereos. Their inner dj fills them with the need to make sure everybody on the beach knows what they are jamming. If you are interested in sampling both beaches, there is a trail that crosses the middle of the island d and connects both. I believe it is takes 15-20 min. Another hike I strongly recommend is the hike to see the ruins of the old lighthouse. It takes about 15-20 min and is an easy hike. Best to wear shoes or sandals that aren't flip flops. But if flip flops are all you have then it's fine. My wife hiked it in flip flops. You will notice a dried up lake in the middle of the island. The view from the top is spectacular. There is the lighthouse itself, but the real prize is the view. You can see the whole island and beyond. Breathtaking. There is Cayo Norte, a smaller island, to the north, and some other tiny island's. To the west is Culebra, maybe even Vieques on a clear day. South is the open sea, and to the east, on a clear day, you can see St. Thomas. Excellent photo and selfie ops. As you cross the middle of the island, on either hike, you might hear or see goats or deer. Culebrita is a must visit of you are staying a couple of days in Culebra. The only way to get there is by boat. If you don't own one or have friend that does, you can always male a reservation with a water taxi service or charter an excursion. There are a couple that offer rides to Culebrita, and other places such as Cayo Luis Peña (great for snorkeling). H20 Water Taxi, Cato Norte Water Taxi, and blue Water Excursions are some examples. The each have a Facebook page with more info, as well a a Yelp page. You can always ask local businesses about other services and/or their recommendations.
