The beach was very clean, with a few options for shade and make-shift, barebones cabanas. We were fortunate to have a hotel that offered beach chairs and a cooler for us to take on beach trips. This made all our beach trips comfortable and on our budget. The water was shallow for quite a bit, and then got slightly deeper. Good for swimmers of all strengths. I would definitely recommend visiting this beach during your stay in Vieques.

But be careful! I'm not sure why we didn't see this at the other beaches we went to (Pata Prieta and La Chiva), but there were so many stingrays that came right up to this beach! Maybe it was just the time of the day (we were there around 5pm, when the tides were coming in), or we just didn't notice it at the other spots? I'm not sure, but we counted at least a half dozen coming in and swimming around in just fifteen minutes that we spent standing in the water. It put us off of wading in. A cool experience but a bit intimidating.

The beach has an expansive sandy shoreline, which could have you taking a stroll along the beach for 30 minutes + in either direction. I thoroughly enjoyed swimming and sunbathing here, along the pristine turquoise waters. Watching little fish swimming by right at my feet was so relaxing and refreshing to see. Our hotel luckily provided us with beach chairs and a cooler, which came in very handy, as there wasn't an option to rent beach chairs or an umbrella. So, please do keep this in mind when visiting this gorgeous beach !!!

It's unfortunate that from my experience, I felt I had been misinformed about Playa Negra. There was a portion of the beach that had the darker/black coloured sand. But to me, the majority of the beach was the regular colour of the sand in Vieques, and the water seemed a little rougher than along other parts of the island. What was beautiful was having a wild horse walk up to me to say hello when I first got to the beach! That was definitely the perk of my visit!

At the ferry terminal, you can get a taxi that will bring you here for about $15 or so. Once you arrive at the "Playa Negra" sign, there is a short hike through a swampy region to get to the actual beach. The entire beach is not covered with black sand, only portions of it - at least the day I visited. It was not crowded at all. It was very scenic and calm!

My favorite part was being able to walk quite far out into the gentle warm waves on soft white sand and still be standing with water neck high. The highlight of the vacation was getting to try so many beaches, from the western side of Green Beach, to the most eastern public beach of Silver Beach. It's totally worth the extra few minutes drive though. It's not well marked on the Vieques tourist map - its marked as 'platita'. Like most of the beaches this one has no services at all. And like all the beaches its a quick walk from the car, through the mangroves to the sand. The times we have been there it's never been crowded - like maybe a dozen people over a 1/2 mile long beach. This beach has the whitest sand of any of the beaches you can get to on Vieques. In addition to this, there is a small beach where some locals have stacked up some pretty cool rocks. When you first get there, it looks like this small beach is kinda far and you have to swim. Not the case. The water is hip deep and you can walk wade over to the little beach. The beach its self it flat & shallow, no real waves, the water seems to be a little warmer because of how shallow it is, good for snorkeling, good for kids. There was a small pavilion with info on the tree and its history. While here we also saw a large heard of horses in the nearby field. This wont be a destination thing to do, but you can definitely stop by en route to your next thing for a couple of photos. Oh, be careful if you touch the tree. It has spikes on the limbs!

Another gorgeous beach in Culebra is Tamarindo Beach. Locals recommended it since it's on the other…read moreside of the island and doesn't have the seasonal algae that can show up at Flamenco Beach. It's not as family-friendly, though--there isn't much space to spread out, and it's better known as a snorkeling spot. The area is known for sea urchins and stingrays (though I didn't see any), and while the shoreline is a bit rocky, I still enjoyed swimming there. The scenery here is stunning--honestly even prettier than Flamenco, with mountains creating a beautiful backdrop. Just keep in mind it doesn't have the same amenities as Flamenco, so plan accordingly.

We definitely want to protect and preserve the best (literally) bioluminescent bay in the world, right? So yeah, you can only visit through tour groups. The one-hour tours will definitely feel too short (cries), and you're not allowed to get into the water. Our guide told us that swimming was prohibited since (I think) 2008? I forget the exact year she said. Anyway, some tips if you want them: 1. DEFINITELY only choose tours that use clear-bottom kayaks! Trust me, seeing the water light up and streak along the bottom of the boat was like mini galaxies exploding. It reminded me of the Disney Space Mountain ride. You are missing out if you don't do this. 2. Try to go at or around new moon. Although, even if it's full moon, I'm not sure if this matters if the moon doesn't appear until, say, well after midnight anyway? Hmm... 3. The tours are popular, especially around new moon, so book early! 4. wear water shoes. The walk from land to the kayak in water was sandy and rough on the feet. 5. look for fast streaks of light in the water; those are the fish darting around, super cool to see!! 6. our guide did mention that while this place has bioluminescence year-round, the maximum activity is during summer months. Do what you will with that. This was definitely highlight in our Puerto Rico trip!

We weren't told until the very last minute that we were required to take our shoes off at the lagoon b4 we got off the bus. We had to walk across very rough, rocky ground into deep mud to get into the kayaks. I was very worried about getting my feet cut during that. The rest of the trip was fun and the staff obviously enjoy their jobs. Thank you for a unique experience.
