I explained funds were limited since I had recently had a cat with colon resection among many other vet expenses, so I needed to approve what they would be doing. I asked about albuterol (I'm an RN in Pacu and have run a cat rescue on the side for many years) and they said they didn't have any, but didn't bother to explain that Terbutaline is what is most often used in a cat respiratory crisis. The first vet didn't listen to anything I had to say and said that she was the one with the vet degree. I responded calmly that there a great vets and there are bad vets so that comment means nothing. She then abruptly stormed out of the room and went and got the owner vet. I did agree to a chest XR at which point the arrogant male vet said they were not equipped to treat an emergency especially with me having a say in any of it and this was at 5:30( my appt was at 5) that he refused to treat and was quite ugly about it and referred me to the emergency clinic in Hoover. Now if funds are limited to begin with, how can I afford the emergency clinic? But of course Kent Farms didn't care. Plus at this point my cat was freaked out in a strange place which made his breathing even worse. They had my cat in the back and brought him to me telling me to leave. As I quickly walked out, I called my regular vet across town and even though they closed at 6 they said come. I got there at 5:57 and the vet stayed and treated him. The XR was not definitive. Radiologist that read it said either asthma or fungal pneumonia. Now they think heart worm is a possibility. Anyway my regular vet saved his life that with terbutaline, steroids, and antibiotics. He is now on Revolution, prednisolone, and occasionally requires a round of Doxycycline. Fungal blood tests came back negative. The experience at Kent Farms happened over 4 months ago. I was trying to go some place closer to home, but that was a mistake. Kent Farms even called the next day and left a message wanting to know what happened with my cat and asked my address so they could send me a bill. A bill for what, for endangering his life by refusing to treat him. Kent Farms Animal Hospital is awful.

Our 7-year old cat began having problems the week before last. It started out as hacking and…read morevomiting as with hairballs, but by Thursday night she was not eating at all, and if she did drink a small amount of water, she'd immediately vomit it back up. She became a bit lethargic and was obviously losing weight. I called Friday morning, but our normal vet could not see her until the next Monday. I found that MAC could see her immediately because they are walk-in only. The doctor saw her quickly and after an exam, gave us a very reasonable quote for suggested procedures (bloodwork, IV fluids, hospitalization). We left her there for treatment over the weekend. The staff did call with updates. On Monday, a technician called to say they had no good news but were going to run more bloodwork. I asked if they had done an x-ray to check for an obstruction and she said no, and acted like that was a strange request. Later in the afternoon, the doctor called to say things were not good. He told use she had FIV (feline AIDS). That was news to us, and a very unusual disease for an indoor cat to have. He said her inability to keep anything down was likely due to a GI infection she could not fight off. He said there was nothing they could do for her and that she would probably not live much longer without eating or drinking. He said this is common with FIV cats. While he did not suggest euthanasia, when I brought that up, he seemed to think that was a good option. We went that evening, expecting to see our cat on her deathbed and to say goodbye. When we got there, she was fairly active and seemed fairly normal. After some discussion, we decided to take her home, fully expecting to be back in a few days when she began to go downhill. When we checked out, we were charged some additional fees for more bloodwork, but it was still very reasonable. For the next few days, she was still fairly lethargic, and vomited a few times after drinking. Once or twice, she did eat a few morsels and keep them down. She sis not seem to be in any pain and did not seem to be getting worse, but she needed to eat. On Thursday, we called our regular vet and got her in there. I brought all the bloodwork records from MAC. Oddly enough, none of that included the FIV test results, and when our vet did the test, it came back negative! Our doctor said that the test is very accurate. She did an x-ray, and saw what might have be a soft object in her stomach, so we had an endoscope done. That shows nothing - no tumors, no foreign objects, all was good. Since the, she has slowly started easting again and has been less lethargic. It remains to be seen what is (was) wrong, but at least she seems to be improving. I think MAC does a good job, but I question the validity of their FIV test (especially since it was not listed on their bloodwork results). I also question the doctor almost letting us euthanize our dear pet. I just believe they could have been more diligent in doing more diagnostic work (x-rays).

In honor of Pisces and the full moon, the class included water salutations and guided meditation to open the imagination. We then finished by making our own foot scrubs! Tucked in a quiet shopping center on the backside of alabaster, this business offers classes and also cat adoption! You can make an appointment to visit the cat room and meet the cats they have up for adoption. I did not get any pictures of the cat room, but I met the kitties they had and they were so sweet and adorable! Skye led our class, and she was knowledgeable and kind, and made sure we were all comfortable throughout the class. She has an incredibly calming presence, and I absolutely felt relaxed and refreshed after everything. We also got to make our own foot scrubs as part of the class, and all the materials were provided, including a large array of essential oils with explanations on what each of them are helpful for. The front of the space is a small shop, offering items such as crystals, candles, books, and secondhand clothes. I took home several tinctures and beverage concentrates. I've known this place around for a while and I wish I had checked it out sooner! If you're in the Shelby County area and want to meet some precious kitties or take a yoga class, you should definitely check them out!
