I guess I'm not surprised that this place has a very low rating. I bought a Groupon for half a bushel of "Premium" crabs, supposedly including a paper roll, bibs and mallets. Our crabs literally didn't have one ounce of seasoning on them, they were extremely small and very light, not much meat, no bibs(which is fine, but don't say they're included and not include them), some mallets and no paper roll. I'm from the eastern shore of Maryland and have lived in LA for over 25 years, it's a special treat to order crabs and have a feast with my east coasters that are out west with me. Food - crabs overcooked Customer Service - sent pictures and I was told the claw meat may be a little dry but the rest looks great and they were sorry to hear that I was not satisfied. So like many others I found what seemed like a too good to be true deal on Groupon for $37 you get $115 worth of credit on the site. Knowing this, I already saw the fine print said shipping was separate. Obvi i was going to have to hork over $20-50 on that alone, but I knew this before buying. The site has many offerings but I went with gator fillets, 1lb lump blue crab meat, a bag of sea scallops, tray of crab artichoke dip and some seasoning. Overall i basically paid $90 of my own money besides the groupon. But whatever.. were in a weird world right now so I just did it. I never received an email confirmation so that bugged me out for days, but it did give a specific date for delivery so I hoped for the best. It arrived that expected day, packed well and still frozen with some dry ice left. But for the price let me say... not worth buying again even though all items tasted great. The scallops were frozen and from another state, the price of the gator was marked up x3 (company sells it for $45 and in FL stores its $11..friggin wack.) The only genuine Maryland item was the crab meat which still had a ton of shells in it I had to pick out but it happens. Still, I would recommend skipping this company. You are far better off just buying scallops and crab meat in your local store and finding another Florida shipper to get gator at a fair price. First, quite a few of my crabs were hollow and nothing in legs, 2nd, the crab vegetable soup was tasteless with the fake "pink skin crab". Ordered with a groupon $115 worth of seafood for $40. Ordered 2 dozen female LARGE crabs. Ended up paying about $120 ($40 plus $78 in s/h & fees). When I got the crabs, they were NOT large and almost all of them were damn near hollow. I'd read from a google search that female crabs had less meat than male crabs, but this didn't seem right at all. Another Google search told me that crabs that have recently molted are hollow like that because they fill themselves up with water until they grow into their new shells and harden, so I'm assuming my batch of crabs were all recently molted. I ended up going to an Asian fish market in my neighborhood and getting 6 female crabs for $10. They were slightly larger than those I'd gotten from Blue Crab Trading, and they were so much fuller and meatier. I could have gotten 2 dozen for $40 instead of the $120 I paid for Blue Crab Trading. I am one that got a Groupon. On groupon they advertise shipping would be at most 50. Well, my shipping was 111! I did not even use my full 115 groupon voucher because I was still paying 135 to get the crab to me. Then they come, I am a crabbing person here in California, one thing people need to know is Blue crab have a different shell, point to point and those points on mine were 1.5 to 1 inch long on each side, so the actual bodies were miniature. These crab would not even be legal to catch in California. I will say they do have a good flavor, but it is a chore to get the meat out. Each crab yields about 1/4 c of meat (I got the 5-6 inch Males). I will not be ordering again, I will find another company who is more reliable, if shipping was just the 50 or even 60 that would be much more reasonable. (As advertised) read more

I pictured 2 out of the 3 broken crabs from the dozen that was purchased over the July 4th holiday. I have purchased crabs before from Harbour House from Groupon and they were Delicious And Juicy! So good in fact I actually ate them cold! My family from their previous experience, asked me to purchase from Blue Crab Trading Co and I did. Worst decision I ever made. I bought a dozen and 3 were broken, 3 were light in weight like they were cooked just before they died which left me with a good 6 to deal with. They were Not juicy but Dry and OK. I even tried to revive them by steaming them which had NO effect. I felt like I got what was left over from the holiday. They cleaned up from the party and shipped me what was left. Not a drop of juice in the bag. Can't say that for HH (Harbour House) which I will continue to order from. Was I penalized because I ordered from Groupon and not their website? We purchased two of the Groupons - 45.00 for 115.00 worth of seafood - there was a special on the site so we saved an additional 18.00 for each, for a total of 47.00 for both Groupons. I've seen a lot of reviews about the company/Grouponis a rip-off- it is not! It clearly states on the Groupon that shipping is not including. You are able to go to the Blue Crab Trading site where the additional charges are indicated - there is a shipping and handling fee, a packaging fee, and a package coverage fee. The packaging was very good quality with dry ice, which justifies the cost. We ordered 2 dozen large/jumbo steamed female blue crabs with regular spice. The order arrived on the date requested, the crabs were delicious, very sweet and sized were good. I highly recommend this company for value, service, and product. read more

My particularly positive experience with Blue Crab Trading has converted me from a passive Yelper ("always check the reviews but don't post") to a committed reviewer. Mostly because our order was 100% accurate, super quick and yummy. Because of the other reviews you may read here, I really had to take a leap of faith when placing an order with this company. I never do that. I suffer from Yelp paralysis - I will read all 50 reviews of a restaurant (and the ratings of their 20 closest neighbors) before deciding whether to go in for a cup of coffee. I've been known to check out street views on Google Maps before committing to a hotel. So, it took every bit of will power and faith to go with Blue Crab. We had a party of 15 coming to our home in California for a nonprofit fundraiser dinner - a crab feed dinner. Just crabs. Failure in the crab department would have been horrendous. Five days to find crabs and not much money with which to do it. With the Free Shipping package at Blue Crab Trading, a bushel of male crabs (plus some extra goodies) was almost $80 less than the competition. I couldn't ignore that deal, but Yelp reviews had me scared so we called. The staff was quite helpful and reassuring. I went online and clicked "submit order." Because I was still nervous, we called again. And again, we were assured they had received our order and that they understood it really, really, really had to arrive by the date selected. Our big box arrived one day early - which wasn't a problem because it was well packed with dry ice and stayed cold. Crabs were perfect. As a former resident of St. Michaels MD, I know what Blue Crabs should be and how they cook up. Other reviewers comments that they were "dirty" was a bit perplexing. Perhaps they meant the spices and "foam" (the normal grunge on all cooked blue crabs that comes from fat deposits)? This is just how they come. Anywhere. Note - I ordered directly. Although I am also "deal" addict and constantly use Groupon, Living Social, etc, I did not do so in this case. These people are straight rip off artists. I bought a "$115 of seafood for $45" Groupon. When I went to redeem it, they had a $46 package with 6 crab cakes or a $116 package with 8 crab cakes. That's correct... they charge you $70 for an additional TWO crab cakes. Those two extra crab cakes cost 252% more each than the first 6. "No problem," you say. "Just order a few of the $46 packages." Nope!!! They're out of stock!!!! Isn't that convenient!! In theory, my $115 voucher should get me 2.5 of the 6 crab cake packages (15 crab cakes). Since those are "out of stock", they'll be happy to sell me roughly half that for $115!!! Sorry... but that's straight scum tactics in my world. Seriously... These folks don't actually honor the Groupon deal with any decency or integrity, so I'd be skeptical about doing any business with them. I can't trust my seafood quality to scam artists. read more

Like other reviewers, I saw the LivingSocial deal for Blue Crab Trading Co. and was excited that I could get authentic MD blue crabs delivered to my house all the way out here in California. I grew up in Maryland and LOVE pickin' blue crabs. I didn't have any problems ordering through the website with the LivingSocial deal. It was easy and I had a dozen crabs and 40 huge shrimp delivered to my door New Year's Eve. I was pleasantly surprised actually. Yes, the crabs were on the smaller side but part of the LS deal noted the mixed sizing. If I order from here again without a deal, I would try ordering the larger crabs. Anyway, the crabs reheated just fine and I tried a few cold and those were good too. Package came with 4 crab mallets, crab paper and a pound of delicious spice. The shrimp were huge and really good too. Btw, if you've ever had blue crabs, they always have a mix of spice and gunk on top.. and you don't eat the outside shell, so I'm not sure why other people said they had to scrub them before eating? Overall, I would recommend trying this place if you miss MD crabs. The closer you live, the faster the delivery and the fresher the crabs will be. Unfortunately living in CA, it takes two days for the crabs to travel so I ordered them steamed as not to risk any of them dying on the way over. But if you live somewhat closer, I'd recommend ordering them live and steaming them fresh yourself. That said, if there is a deal, I would do this again, but the regular prices are high. My guess is this deal was offered in the off-season to bring more business. Ordering from them over the summer is probably way better so I will round up 3.5 stars to 4 :) read more

DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!! I ordered a bushel of live blue crabs to be shipped. When they arrived the crabs were completely frozen. After calling several seafood places in the area of Blue Crab Trading because they are not open on the weekends, we were instructed to NOT eat them, you cannot eat live crabs that freeze due to a toxin they discharge, after leaving them out for an hour there was no movement in the whole bushel. I called the company and they said they do not refund on live crabs. This is so disheartening, they were for a family gathering. Imagine replacing live crabs with hot dogs cause thats what we had to do!! The total costs with shipping was $563.98, that is way too much money to just call a loss. Full loaded chemical smell and taste seafood. I got one dozen blue crab and 2lbs shrimps for my birthday gift. I was so disappointed. The crabs, there are 3 crabs are no meat, almost empty shells, and overloaded spices, super salty, I have to rinsed out all the spices. And the meat you can tasted and smell chemicals. Even the shrimps, you smell nothing but chemical. After I cook the shrimp, you still smell and taste the chemicals. Don't waste your money buying from them. read more

I had a voucher from travelzoo for $120 crabs/product for $60. First we had problem placing the order and being told it expired before we even purchased it. Once we finally, after my persistence had the matter cleaned up, I ordered crabs and fish cakes. These crabs are the WORSE! They have barely any meat and had an odor. BEWARE!!! How I wish I read the reviews! I purchased an offer from Living Social for the Blue Crab Trading Company. I purchased one for myself and one for my sister as a gift. It was 1/2 price with shipping included, however when I used the first voucher for myself they charged me an additional $45.99 for shipping plus $5.00 for insurance. I complained but was not answered. I complained to LivingSocial and they said they checked the other voucher and that it includes shipping and that I would have to get a refund from BCTC for shipping on the first. Then my sister tried to use her voucher and it says it's INVALID. I was able to put an order up using the voucher but again it want $45.99 plus $5.00 insurance. I get no help from LivingSocial and no help from BCTC. Just a side note: My order was for my 38th anniversary family dinner: Crabs came defrosted with a strong fishy smell. I do not understand all the bad reviews that I have read. I moved to Arizona four years ago after living my entire life in Maryland and being raised eating Maryland steamed crabs. Bo-Brooks in Bel-Air was our go to place and any crab measuring less then 12 inches claw to claw would have been a disappointment. I haven't seen a crab that large in approximately 25 years. Large crabs like that just doesn't exist anymore. With that being said the Bushel of large crabs from Blue Crab Trading did not disappoint. When I called a few days before delivery date I found the customer service to be extremely informative, friendly and helpful. They even added a pound of large shrimp to the order that was unexpected at no extra fee. The crabs were delivered on time and well iced even in the desert. I had to add Old Bay when reheating the crabs but that was not an issue givin that they send you a large bag of seasoning for that purpose. Two of my guest had just moved to Phoenix from Maryland and they were so comforted by the familiar taste, smell and crab eating experience. Thank you Blue Crab Trading. It was a terrible experience with Blue Crab trading company on several issues: 1) Recently bought a livingsocial coupon to try it out. Even after paying $20 + $14 for shipping and handling, the $69 package was a complete joke. The quality of the crabs sent was possibly one of the worst I've ever seen, they are not even worth a quarter of that price. If I had looked at those crabs in the store, I would not waste a dollar on them. 2) My package was sent to the wrong address a few blocks over (Fedex's fault) and was brought over by a kind soul from that address. But it was a day late and the ice blocks were thawed and the contents barely cool. Since I'm not the shipper I cannot file a Fedex claim. After email correspondence, BTC refused to acknowledge the issue and wanted a photo of the thawed ice blocks! It was a horrible experience with their customer service. We were disappointed of our order, we ordered 2 dozen of male and female in extra large, advertised about 7" wide, but most of them were about 6" or less...The shipping was 2 days behind schedule and the delivery was at 8:45pm from UPS. The packing was very tight and clean, the meat was still in frozen stage which is good...But when we ate the crabs, the meat was not firm not solid, kind of shallow, some of the crabs were still dirty from the outside shell. some crabs were very salty...In all its not worth the 189$ that we paid.
