I went to buy a cubic yard handy bag of decorative rock and they wouldn't provide it on the same day. Said I need to give them a day's notice. I drove 45 mins to get there so this was extremely annoying. Guess they don't need the business. I will buy elsewhere. read more

Years ago, when our property was originally landscaped, Brion & I were very adamant about having it done with a good, deep layer of fertile soil. Over the years we have always tried to maintain that same quality in our soil. For the last number of years, we have made a point of purchasing a Big Yellow Bag of Black Garden Soil from Blue Grass Nursery & Garden Center here in EDMONTON to top up our garden beds with. Topping up a tree and flower garden with 'garden mix' soil offers several benefits, such as retaining moisture in the soil, reducing the need for frequent watering, especially in dry conditions, providing a slow-release source of nutrients, reducing the need for commercial fertilizers, saving money and reducing the risk of over-fertilization. It also provides food and habitat for beneficial organisms like earthworms and bacteria, which play an important role in soil aeration and nutrient cycling as well as helping to improve the pH of your soil, which can be crucial for plant growth, especially if your soil is too acidic or too alkaline. Blue Grass Nursery provided a good first time visit with their unique Christmas setup. Never thought of going to A garden centre to look for Christmas decorations but we were pleasantly surprised with their large selection of trees and house hold Christmas items. The playground ship display really topped off the experience for the children...which allowed us to do more shopping and look at their displays while one parent watches the kids play. Playgrounds are expensive but I believe they all are...no matter where you go. If you're looking for unique Christmas items or Christmas accessories that you can't find at the typical big box store or something that everyone doesn't already have... this is a good place to start. The staff were helpful and patient with our kids...assisting with some nice suggestions....they were very pleasant. Overall, we had a good experience and would come again next year to check out their selection. read more

We bought soil there last year and we were happy with their delivery and the quality of soil. We were disappointed last year as well as this year with their selection of annuals though. It's almost non existent. Their prices are pretty high too. Unfortunately I bought an English Ivy from them this year for $22, the EXACT same plant (same supplier) was $18 at Canadian Tire, and $14 at Superstore. I've heard their sod is really good quality, but overall I'd try somewhere else for plants. read more

Oh bluegrass. I knew I was getting myself into trouble when I strolled in, evening attire, nails and hair did. Oh, the "what the heck are you doing here, are you lost look" from the male associate should have turned me right back around out the door. But through the endless supply of garden decor, halloween yard props, zillions of pots, birdhouses I marched, right to the green house. It was like I walked into the secret garden. Plants. Plants everywhere. Every size and every kind possible. Ones that bugs eat. And ones that eat bugs. And if you are still reading this by now, you would have noticed I have *zero* idea of how things naturally grow outside of a house. I explained my ignorance to a lady associate, and she told me exactly what plant could outlive my ignorance and habit of murdering photosynthesizing life forms. (Biggest word I know). She sent me off with a green palm tree, that she promised will grow up into a real tree, and a red flower type thing that is suppose to outlive the harshest of torment. Another kind lady helped me pick a pot and even "potted" the plant (put the thing in some more dirt and shove it in the new pot) for free. FREE! And I didn't even have to DO anything! That's my kind of gardening! Well that was a month ago, and my plants are still living. Pics for proof to come. Well done Blue Grass, your kindness and grace has renewed my sense of "life giver." -1 star for the gent who gave me the stink eye and refused to help me pick out the right bag of dirt/ fertilizer/ growth soil(?) and then watched me helplessly teeter out the door in my 4 inch heels, two plants and a bag in tow. Travelled here from out of town because I was hoping to find knowledgeable helpful staff...unfortunately that was not the case. I went to the customer service booth where it says you also order supplies. The staff an older man that assisted me literally groaned when I said I needed suggestions on what products to use on my sod to make it the healthiest. After explaining my situation and not getting any response, he just stood there staring off in the distance. I told him that I drove there thinking there would be knowledgeable staff on sod. He then told me what I needed and I bought it. Not sure why it was so difficult for him to want to assist a customer! And both the items I needed were behind the counter so I couldn't of got them myself even if I knew exactly what I needed. Very poor service. read more

This place is the bane of my existence and bank account! I love it there, I buy lots a plants, In fact a bought a new Aralia and Money Tree today, potted them, and was helped out by two lovely ladies to pick out some new flowers for my yard. Next month I will purchase those. Anyway its a rule in the house that I cant go to Blue Grass unsupervised because I will spend roughly all the dollars on stuff. I really do like the atmosphere and selection and so far I would label the staff knowledgeable and friendly. Oh the staff also seems to actually enjoy their jobs so that was neat. read more

Completely disappointed. I drove nearly an hour to get to the store because I was told it was wonderful - and indeed it seemed so. The staff person I worked with was attentive and very helpful. I was purchasing a plant for my adult nephew as a house warming gift. I was given watering instructions which I reiterated to my nephew. Guidance was to water the plant - a Peace Lily - every ten (10) days. I purchased a pot at the store and staff repotted and watered the plant. I purchased the plant on 9/16 and one 10/1 received an email that the plant was completely dead. I phoned the store on 10/4 to explain the situation and request that the plant be replaced. I was told that no staff member would ever give watering instructions as there are too many dynamics involved such as lighting, etc. Although this makes sense, I was given specific instructions and rather than talk with staff and try to figure out why I was given this information, I was simply told that it did not happen which then assumes that I am lying. I find this response to be completely offensive. Thinking about this further - if the plant was fully watered on 9/16 and dead by 10/1 (14 days later) with one watering in between - I don't see how the plant could have died due to lack of water and would suspect there was some other health issue going on. I am completely disappointed by this store's lack of response and appalling attitude towards the customer. Please stand by your products. In the future I will buy basic plants like this around the corner at Lowe's - they would have given a replacement. Shame on you Blue Grass Nursery. read more

Don't order from this company, I ordered a bunch of landscaping materials, the sod was full of rocks and they overcharged by credit card and said they would refund the difference only to respond with, we forgot to charge you GST and the pallet refund. Not of this was mentioned until I wanted my refund for the product I did not receive. Very bad business practice. They are much other places that are more reputable that here. read more

As a horticulturist and professional gardener I have always tried to shop local especially these last few years. I had ordered 19 pallets of "premium fescue blend" sod from blue grass nursery in Red Deer. I had three days scheduled to lay the sod. The day the sod was to be delivered Blue Grass was a no show. By noon my client contacted them at which time they tried to talk my client out of what I had specifically ordered and sell there kentucky blue grass blend. Not drought tolerant and not resilient to sport play. Needless to say I was unable to lay the sod in the two days I had left for the job and as a result 6 pallets of sod were destroyed due to composting. The sod I did lay was poorly harvested with many pieces cut to thin some with holes in the middle. As a company who advertises "Alberta Proud" they don't appear to be to proud of their sod farm as evident in their poor product and poor customer service. read more

Amazing staff and extremely helpful and great customer service despite this being the busy season and they're probably working ridiculous 15 hour shifts and run right off their feet. And yet there is so helpful and friendly and wonderful. They have everything you need here, all displayed beautifully and very well organized both for interior plants and exterior. There's some kind of amazing plants here I've never even seen in my life and I've been gardening for 30 years. I'm going to take some photos the next time I'm there and that way I can describe better because some of the stuff I don't even know what to call it. For example they have these beautiful framed wall hangings, picture in your mind a wooden picture frame approximately 2' x 2', and inside instead of a picture they have beautiful extremely gorgeous healthy succulents. Of all shapes and sizes and colors. You just hang this on your wall in a sunny spot and spritz it with water once in a while and somehow it survives and thrives. I've never seen anything like it and it's only $86 I'm going to get about three or four for my house. It goes without saying I'm doing on my perennials and annuals shopping here this year as well. A very nice nursey and helpful staff. Buyer beware this nursey is very expensive. Same products can be found at another nursey for 50% LESS. When this was brought to the attention of at least two staff members they replied that they were not surprised. I asked if they would price match and they said no. As much as I have enjoyed going to this nursery I will be taking my money elsewhere. read more

They have tons of products, shrubs, trees, sod, flowers, annuals, perennials, and even an indoor green house. They staff is great, very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. After we ordered a cube of garden mix we went to pick it up, no one had a clue about our order and after about 30 minutes we told them we were leaving and going else where they told us we could finally pick it up. Finally got it home and started planting, what crap they called garden mix! It is so compact and hard it is mostly clay. When it gets wet it turns to cement. We will not be buying anything there again we will make the trip to boss sod by lethbridge way better product read more

Brutal customer service. Stood at the service counter when two staff were there. One left and the other avoided eye contact. When she couldn't avoid eye contact any longer, she actually asked "has anyone helped you?!" When I said "no" she left! I thought I would give them another chance after past experience of poor service, but this was the last. Yesterday was the first time I had ever gone to Blue Grass Garden Center, and as an avid gardener I was excited to have another greenhouse option near Calgary, but unfortunately I will not be going back. Upon arriving to the nursery I noticed they had beautiful plants but the organization was a little awkward especially with a cart, and the prices were fairly high. Eventually I picked out a few plants (about $70 worth). Once I was rung through the till I noticed that I was miss charged for two begonias (about $8 overcharged). I pointed this out to the friendly clerk and she told me to show her where I got them so she could be sure that the price I thought they were was correct. I showed her where I got them, which was an entire section of begonias. She then confirmed that I was in fact miss charged and should go to customer care to get a refund. At customer care they again had to check to see if I was wrong and seemed to have difficulty giving me my refund within their POS system. Eventually 2 other employees went and checked the signage and all agreed that the sign said they were cheaper, this process took just over 15 minutes. I was about to be given my money back until a fourth employee came and said that they would not give me my money back and that I was just confused. I explained that my original cashier confirmed the price difference and she responded by telling me that that was a seasonal employee and she will be having a word with her. I explained what the signage said but she would not even listen to me and instead blamed me and said it was my mistake. So basically 3 out of 4 employees confirmed the sign was wrong and that I should get money back and yet they did not, they waisted 20minutes of my time. I left the nursery feeling insulted and cheated. read more
