Upon arrival one dog…read morealready in the large-dog side of the enclosed area seemed a little forceful and intimidating, both for me and my puppy, as we approached the gate inside the sallyport. And as it was my pup's first experience with a dog park / "play date" since I've owned him, I really wanted it to be a positive one for him, so I started to back off of the gate where the other dog was. To my great surprise, the owner of the other dog, while assuring me that his dog wouldn't hurt mine, ultimately showed tremendous kindness and understanding and offered, since there were no other dogs in it, the idea of me taking my pup to the small dog side and letting him run the fence line opposite his dog so they could safely get to know one another. (I hadn't thought of it myself out of respect for "small dog" rules posted at the front of the park, not realizing that it was unoccupied at the time.) Not only that, but a very kindly young woman who also had her (much less assertive) big dog over on that side, offered to bring him over to the small dog side for a while so my puppy would have someone to play with directly as well. And that's what we did. Not long after, the gentleman with the more assertive dog packed up and left, and the younger lady and I both moved our dogs back to the large dog side, as smaller dogs were now arriving to play too. I have to say, every owner of other dogs at the park yesterday morning was nothing but kind, considerate, and absolutely interested in helping my pup have a good time, including the now-arriving small dog owners who could easily have been unhappy to see my big guy in the small dog enclosure. All were welcoming, friendly, and kind. By the time I left, about 90 minutes later, my dog had met a dozen or two other big and small dogs, and while he was still getting used to the idea, it WAS a very positive experience - both for him AND for me. All owners were observant and acted very responsibly about making sure their dogs behaved well and were picked up after as needed. The park grounds and facility are unexpectedly nice, with a wonderfully well-designed sallyport entry / exit / rinse off configuration for both sides of the park, plenty of parking, shade and seating, water bowls and spigots, waste bags and receptacles, and my dog and I enjoyed the experience enough that we definitely plan to return. I did learn from the other owners that being there in the summer is a lot nicer than in season, when it can become very crowded. But it's a really nice exercise and socialization opportunity for my puppy, and I recommend it to anyone who wants a great "play date" experience for themselves and their dog. I definitely got my money's worth, walking a little over 13 miles of trails. Most of the trails are well marked, but I did find it hard to navigate some of the trails resulting in me making a couple circles before I found the correct direction... but, extra steps aren't a bad thing, right?! There is a big lake along one of the trails. I was hoping to see a lot of wildlife here, but it wasn't super active. I did see about four different types of birds. There are a good amount of restrooms available as well as areas to have a picnic. I think most of the trails are doable for all levels of fitness as I saw several benches to rest along the way; they are also marked on the trail maps. I only went to explore for the day, but there are many campsites, a nature center, playgrounds and a beach area that I spotted in my park travels.

Do NOT come to the playground here with children…read more Aside from the non fenced shoreline with alligator warning signs on them (doubt that is a huge issue, but dont risk it) the building right next to it is filled with homeless guys generally up to no good. It is NOT SAFE. I went with my child on a walk from sun seeker and tried to pay them no mind, but one man on a bike rolled up and started snapping photos of my daughter. When we grabbed her to hide her from the camera he got verbally aggressive demanding we pose for him and "smile pretty"and kept pressing us as we covered her and kept saying no. It was creepy and so upsetting. And yes, it was 100% a guy being creepy about a child, not a misunderstanding. Im from LA and my skin is not thin, im used to homeless literally everywhere and kicking myself for letting my guard down because this the town I grew up in and it is generally safe, this area in particular has always been sketchy though so maybe its my bad for thinking things had changed from 35 years ago. We called the police afterwards and he was thankfully (apparently!) thrown in jail because he had a list of other things combined with our issue, but those are the sorts of guys hanging out there. He was buddies with all the men at that building and they outnumber you.

The playground has fun equipment, there is a sand volleyball court, pickleball court and basket court right in the same area. Ponce de Leon Park in Punta Gorda has that easygoing, waterfront charm that makes you want to…read morelinger, even if you miss the big show at sunset. I arrived too early for the evening colors, which is a bummer, but the park still delivers plenty to enjoy. There are picnic tables, shaded spots, and enough open space for families to spread out and make a day of it. The fishing crowd was out in full force, and the boat launch gives you direct access to Charlotte Harbor, which adds a nice sense of motion and purpose to the shoreline. The only real disappointment is the boardwalk. It is completely closed and visibly buckled, likely from hurricane damage, and it leaves a quiet gap where a scenic stroll should be. There are wild animals; I saw a raccoon just hanging out and not fazed by how many people were there. There is a boat ramp, fishing pier, and picnic area. Plenty of parking too!
