It was very scenic, even though most of the leaves had fallen form the trees. There is a small beach at one location and small rapids for kayaking. Several dog walkers and a few mountain bikes were using the pathways. This would be a lovely place in the spring to fall when the trees are full.

This natural area is located next to Dead Horse Ranch State Park near Cottonwood. There is no…read morecamping or campfires in the riparian zone, but you can camp at Dead Horse Park. The river is stocked with bass, catfish, and bluegill. In the winter they stock it with trout. There is a lot of wildlife in this region to see. The Verde River is a great spot to canoe or kayak because of all the twists and turns in the river. You can load your boat at the ramp at the Tuzigoot River Access Point which has plenty of parking nearby. Swimming is at your own risk.

There is a large parking lot that costs $5, or you can buy an annual pass that gets you into other area parks as well. It is mostly flat, mostly dirt/rock. There were a few off-shoots we could've taken. There was a porta-potty a ways in. The scenery is spectacular, with stunning rock formations, and some sections showing you the gorgeous Watson Lake. It was used by lots of walkers, a couple of joggers, several bikes, and even a horse. Fun morning.

We hiked a loop trail of the Willow trail (#347), the Mint Wash trail (#345) and 351, parking at the Wekuvde picnic area. On a Monday in September we only saw three other people on the trail until we came to Granite Basin Lake where there was one large group and a couple small groups picnicking. The Willow trail is beautiful, traversing gentle up and down areas of pine woodlands with 180 degree views west, north and east and has partial shade. The post monsoon wildflowers were in full bloom. The route back along Mint Wash was also lovely with 5 or 6 creek crossings, boulders, flowers and Granite Mountain views. The is a $5 parking fee for day use, or it is free with an America the Beautiful National Park pass.

There could be some if you're not careful. The biggest problem otherwise is the parking lot. It's very small and almost always full. There's no spot then just find another spot.

The Almosta trail system wanders through creek beds and mesas offering great views of Granite and…read moreLittle Granite mountain along with interesting geology. The large parking lot and well marked trail begins on Almosta Ranch Road about 0.7 miles west of Williamson Valley Rd on the left hand side. The first 15-20 minutes of the hike is near housing but ample vegetation makes the trail feel private. After the initial housing area, the trail starts down a rocky canyon and into a wash area with intermittent running water alongside granite and layered sandstone outcrops. This canyon area is the only real steep portion. You can hike almost as long as you like on the main trail #622 which heads southwest, but a nice ~ 7.5 miles lollipop loop is to take a right on trail #625 shortly after crossing Mint Creek wash, a gate and corral. Hike about a mile west/southwest to the junction with 627 and lake a left. 627 has great views of Granite mountain and is a fairly flat section with some nice open grass land areas. 627 meets up again with 622 in about a mile, turn left on 622 and head back to the parking lot. From this section of trail 622 you will have views north and west, so the complete loop affects views in all directions. This trail would be great with spring flowers, after a rain (being careful about flash floods), or with fall color. We only saw one other hiker on our trip.

A parking fee is required, though it is free with a National Parks America the Beautiful pass. We went on a Monday in August just after the monsoon rains and ran into only one other hiker despite the beautiful lush vegetation, cool mushrooms and interesting geology. For a slightly longer trek, park at Cayuse and take trail 351 west through the forest, then make a loop of 350 and 349, the latter trail is the Balancing rock trail. Trail 350 is also excellent and there is an arched rock feature halfway down the trail on the east side that you do not want to miss. We had good shade most of the way despite starting a bit late at 9:30 am. There is not a lot of total elevation gain but you will have some ups and downs to get the heart rate going
