Went here for the first time last night and its obviously a popular spot as it was full. I have not seen many restaurants full on a Sunday night so was expecting to be wowed by the food. The Vorspeise was a mixed plate with some Ethiopian Spring rolls that had a meat filling in them and there was a lentil dish, cous cous and something that looked like spinach. The whole plate lacked seasoning in my opinion and was nice but the flavour was lacking as well. For main we had the Ethiopian national dish which was described as Scharf in the menu and it was two chicken drumsticks in a sauce with a boiled egg. The dish arrived in a big plate that we could all eat from and that was a nice concept. The bread that came with the dish was how you ate the food and you use your hands. There was no heat in the dish and again the flavour was slightly bland and lacked seasoning. I had the Ethiopian Honey Beer for a drink and I think that was the favourite part of my meal. It is in the neighbourhood so I will come back but I must admit it did not wow me in any way. read more

I've been here countless times over the years and was thrilled to find Blue Nile when I first came to Munich. I'd loved Ethiopian food since being spoiled for top-notch places during my college years, as I was close to Washington, DC. Service is always prompt and courteous and food is always delicious. We usually get a mixed plate with a selection of different portions to share, but the mango cream is a good dessert if you have room, and the coffee is really good. The honey wine is possibly the best I've had; it's not overtly sweet or syrupy there. And it's served in a cool flask. Reservations are highly recommended on weekends, as it gets very busy. Secondly, everything is served in one GIANT dish. So, bring your moist towelettes to make sure everyone has nice, clean hands, because you're all eating out of the same bowl! Blue Nile's Ethiopian cuisine has rich, savory flavours and is vegetarian and vegan friendly. The satellite dish of a bowl that they serve things on makes the portions look small; I assure you they are not. I filled up on mostly vegan food here (before succumbing to the call of delicious, savory lamb). There are also varying degrees of spiciness that you can opt for. I can handle screamingly intense spiciness, and I wasn't challenged here, but I do recommend that people observe their own limits. From what I understand, the spiciest dishes here are too spicy for most people...more for me! :D While I enjoyed my dinner, I wish it had been a lunch because I would have loved to have tried the famed Ethiopian coffee. If you're like I am and can't handle caffeine after 15:00, consider coming to this place for lunch. I ended up trying the Ethiopian tea, and even that had too much caffeine for me! I finally went to this restaurant that is right next where I live and it was a great experience! Such a shame I didn't go there before! That was also my first time eating Ethiopian. Let's be honest I checked before the pictures on yelp and I wasn't sure what to expect as I'm not use to this cooking. Some friends and I made a reservation as it always look full especially on the weekend. So we arrived and indeed, a lot of people knowns how good this restaurant is! The decoration of the place is in the main theme of course and there is kinda different rooms on different semi levels(hard to explain). We decided to try their honey alcohol drink and I really liked it, as well as my friends. We picked 2 starters that we shared, it was very good. I can't remember exactly what it was but it was placed on top of a little candle to keep it warm, which is nice. We settled then for the plate to share for the all table (4 people). They brought us a big "basket" with a big "crepe"(like I call it) at the bottom that covers the full plate which has on top all the different preparations. It was in one word AMAZING....taste soo goood! I like the fact that we got to try different mix from meat with sauce, to cheese, mixed with some vegetables. There was some spicy sauce on the side for people who like it. I found it quite spicy and I liked it. The concept is basically to pick some portions with your fingers and the help of a piece of crepe. You have an additional basket with 2 different bread/crepe. Finally, after walking by for 6 years we decided to give Blue Nile a try. I can honestly say that none of us were disappointed that we did. Although it isn't a place I'll be craving to go back to either. The food had great flavors and even though the portion looked small at first, it was more than we could eat! I found the sour dough bread an extremely interesting way to eat and had a nice bite. Service was not the fastest, so if you go on a weekend night just be prepared for a 2 hour dinner. I don't understand how anyone could give this place less than the 5 stars it definitely deserves! I LOVE this place. It's really one of the few restaurants that I've been to in Munich where everything was much better than I expected. To be honest, I had never had Ethiopian food before I ate here, but I do love ethnic food so I wanted to give Blue Nile a try. I'm so glad I did. I went here with a friend for my birthday and we did the mixed platter for two. The mixed starter was just enough to hold those hunger cravings for another 15 minutes before the main course is served. Like other reviewers, I had the spring rolls with meat filling. I think spring rolls is actually a bit of a deceiving name, since they simply LOOK like spring rolls, but taste nothing like anything I've ever had at an asian restaurant. Not greasy, not messy, and they had that perfect pastry flakiness. Yum! Washed down with some of their delicious honey wine, I could have left at that point and still been happy with what I had. Next was the much anticipated main course. I was nervous the portions would be small, but we really couldn't finish it all. I'm sure you can ask for a fork and knife, but eating with an Ethiopian meal the Ethiopian way only seems right. The bread the meal is served with reminded me of an American style pancake. Be careful not to eat too much! It is quite filling, and you want to save your appetite to try all the different types of meat, eggs, and dips they've brought you! After I thought I couldn't eat anymore I forced myself to the dessert and coffee. Also, no regrets there! As far as service goes, I could not have been more satisfied. The restaurant was quite busy and we didn't have reservations, so we had to sit outside. As soon as a table opened up inside, a server came to us and asked if we would like to move. Everyone was so friendly and just gave us the feeling that they really appreciated our business.....a feeling that is unfortunately not the standard for many Munich restaurants. I am all for authentic when it comes to tastes and cuisines. Therefore I am often disappointed when I encounter what passes for Turkish, Greek, Japanese or Mexican food in some locales here in Munich. More then not the offerings are just a pale localized version of the originals from Istanbul, Athens, Tokyo or Mexico City. In that sense Blue Nile seems to hit the spot with the teff sourdough bread (injera) and the tasty vegetarian and meat dishes on top of it. I do have a couple of issues, though, where there is surely some room for improvement: 1 - Authentic is good, but when it comes to the full ethiopian experience you should still have the option to adapt and customize a little bit. I have nothing against communal eating. But in a restaurant setting, it would be helpful to have a small plate in front of you where you can put down your bread on occasion, or rest the remains of your portion that you could not fit in your mouth at once. 2 - Chicken with bones covered in spicy sauce is hard to pick apart without a knife. Grabbing it with the teff bread just doesn't work. Either the chicken should be deboned or/and cut in small pieces. Picking it by hand tends to be a little unappetizing for the other guests at your table 3 - The injera, i.e. the teff bread, was too thick in my opinion. When I have eaten in other Ethiopian restaurants the bread tended to be much thinner, maybe twice the thickness of a French crepe (our was easily 4-5 times as thick as a crepe). A thinner injera makes the process of eating a lot easier to manage. All in all this is a good restaurant and certainly a different experience. Apart from these points I would recommend it without any reservations. Oh, and apropos reservations, you should really have one since the place is quite popular. read more

I've gone to Blue Nile for years, maybe a dozen times. Last night was the last time for a LONG while. They gave away our reservation when we were 9 minutes late. Finally we got seated after 20min, but then waited forever for anything to come (including 1.5h for the main course!). No apology until we had asked 3 times if they forgot our food. To top it off there was extremely loud music. I love live music, and the ethnic Ethiopian music was OK. But as we looked around the restaurant, NO ONE could talk - they were all just staring around and frowning. Unbelievable for a dinner restaurant at 8pm! The amplified acoustic instruments in a narrow concrete-and-wood space just reverberated and made our ears ring. The waiter and manager were really rude the whole time and clearly the kitchen was not in order that night. Really spoiled my Blue Nile image :-/ read more

I have heard people rave about it, but it did not make my taste buds tinglein fact I found the The pancake-like 'injira' to be sooo watery and it had a really strong taste that was ok for a coupl eof mouthfuls, but beyond that I just wanted to throw up. read more

Went there for a birthday party when the weather was quite warm. We were sat in the back which was extremely hot and made the whole experience very uncomfortable. The waitresses were pretty good at bringing us drinks quickly but the food took a very long time. I would definitely recommend the sampler appetizer that we had. Came with some sort of lamb spring roll which was delicious. It also came with a tasty couscous and lentil dish as well as some spinach item. As for the dinner we ordered a mixed platter as well. The best item besides the spongy bread was some sort of beef or lamb dish that had strips of meat, onions and spicy green peppers. If I can figure out what that dish was I would definitely order it again. Unfortunately, besides the food taking so long, it took us about an hour to get our check. They were very accommodating when it came to splitting up the drink bill for the 18 people in our party though. It would be advisable for them to invest in some fans for when it is that hot. The only reason I didn't get up to leave from the almost unbearable heat was because it was a friend's birthday party. Went here twice, i liked it so much that the second time i have even taken my mum here when she came to visit me in Munich. It is very nice, i loved that way they serve the food in big straw trays. Ok you have to eat with your hands but if you ask they will provide you with some forks, even if i think eating with your hands is part of the experience. i din't like too much the sweet wine that everyone was raving about but that's personal taste. My favorite was the appetizers - 3 different kinds of rice, with some little meat pastry things, and salad. The staff was so so friendly as well. Heads up though - cash only!
