Yesterday my partner and I went to Blu Olive with some friends and we had excellent service and a fantastic dining experience. We had no reservation and were told there would be a long wait, but we decided to put our names down regardless. They served us wine while we waited, and all the servers were very kind and professional. I'm gluten free and I had plenty of options, all the food was excellent, the souvlaki was a hit. Our party of 4 arrived at 6:30 to a mostly empty restaurant, yet it was 15 minutes before we even had water on our table. I ordered scallop souvlakia, and another 15 minutes later the waiter returned to say they didn't have any scallops. ("Do you like shrimp?".) Our food was finally served luke warm. We asked for extra napkins that never arrived. The "Greek" salad was made with lettuce instead of cucumber. We are not difficult diners, not looking to criticize, but for these people to get it right, they need to serve food HOT, attend to clients' requests, and speed things up. These problems all trickle down from the management. You either run a tight ship or you don't. Food was mostly tasty, but we're probably not going back. Greek, Lebanese, Turkish... it doesn't matter the time of day, it doesn't matter if I've just had a full meal, it doesn't matter whether it comes from a place with linen tablecloths or a takeout counter - I want it all. Obviously, even just walking in the door at Blue Olive was bound to make me happy. My first visit was just for a dessert to cap off the day. Enter the Loukoumades - fried balls of dough that arrived drizzled in all kinds of honey goodness. They reminded me of a Dutch treat I used to love when I lived abroad (oliebollen for anyone keeping track) except they're served smaller so you can eat a whole bunch of them at once. New obsession. My second visit, though, blew the first out of the water. Why? Well, a few reasons but let's start with Drew. Blue Olive only has one server and she is an absolute saint. I love feeling like a regular when I go places and Drew was quick to make me feel like I had just come home to my imaginary Greek relative's house for dinner. I also love watching the hilarious dynamic between her and Jimmy, the owner, who's very quick to make the rounds whether it's just to say hi to customers or to pour the wine. Second, the vibe of the place just really floats my boat. Once the sun sets, I love the low lights and the little nooks and crannies that let you feel some privacy even though it's a pretty small spot. It's the perfect setting for the kind of personal attention that you'll get and proved to be a great spot for a nice dinner out with friends. Third, well, this one's obvious: the FOOD. The Flaming Saganaki blew. my. mind. I actually can't believe that I had never tried it until now but it was delicious. Not to mention a bit shocking at just how much flame bursts out of that sucker. I had a nice ravioli in a sundried tomato cream sauce that was good enough (the actual sundried tomatoes were some of the best I've tasted) but next time I'll definitely go with one of their more classic plates. I had total meal envy of the souvlaki dishes and was in awe of the chicken spanakopita special. Check the photos - you'll see why. Wow. I was surprised how good and fresh the food. The mossaka is very light but short eggplant. Still, I was disappointed it wasn't a bigger piece. The haddock is delicious and very light if you get it with rice. Skip french fries as a side and always go for the roast potatoes. read more

Unacceptable take out experience. I ordered take out from the Blue Olive for my family this evening and every part of the experience was frustrating. 1. It began with a long wait - a minor point, but included for completeness. When we placed our order, we were told to pick up the food in 25 minutes. We arrived on time, but my wife had to wait an additional 30 minutes to take our food away while I waited in the car with a screaming toddler. To add to the frustration, we watched another customer walk past a line of people waiting and get immediate service when he announced he "knew the owner". 2. When we arrived home, after all that, WE WERE MISSING AN ENTIRE MEAL. We had paid for THREE meals, but only TWO had been included in the bag. When we called the restaurant to figure out a solution, their response was "Oh, we must have given your other meal to someone else." There was no offer to REPLACE the meal we paid for but did not receive. There was no offer to REFUND the meal we paid for but did not receive. There was no APOLOGY for the inconvenience of ordering a dinner for three, and receiving a dinner for two. The only response that they provided was that the manager was "At an event" and that they couldn't fix the problem right now. They took down my number, and said the manager would call me back at 9 PM. Fine. Infuriating, but whatever. We split up our meals and ate. The manager didn't call back. When I called to see what had happened, the staff told me that the manager wasn't back by the time he said he would be, and that he'll call me tomorrow. This was the most frustrating take out experience I've ever had. This restaurant had to temporarily close a few years ago because of mismanagement leading to financial issues, and based on my experience tonight, I'd say the management situation has not improved at all. "One star" doesn't capture how incredibly frustrating this was. -- UPDATE: The following day the manager did not call me; however, I did drop by the restaurant, and when I arrived he was quite apologetic. He offered a full refund and a $50 gift certificate to make up for the inconvenience. Even though the initial experience was quite frustrating, I felt the gift certificate to be a generous apology for what the manager claimed was a particularly bad night for them, and I've updated my rating to reflect this. read more

I'll start by saying the service at this restaurant was great. Our server was very friendly and helped us out with the menu. We ate here for the first time last week for lunch and it will most likely be the last time unfortunately. The restaurant was empty and I now know why.... Our meal was just "okay"..nothing to rave about...the roasted potatoes tasted as though they were cooked prior to us arriving (possibly day old roasted potatoes), and they are very stingy on the amount of food. The pita wraps may have had 2 slivers (and I mean slivers) of red onion in them and there was about 4 bites of chicken in the entire wrap. The couple of bites of chicken and two slices of tomato and potatoes would be about half of what you would get at any pita place for about $7 rather than the $10-$12 charged here. Know that you're basically paying to sit down at a nice restaurant, but know if you're going in for "lunch" you're paying for the atmosphere, not the food. Aside from tasting like they were day-old cooked potatoes, I decided to give them a go. They were neatly arranged on the plate (to take up a lot of the white space). When I cut through one and picked it up with my fork, I now know why they were neatly arranged on the plate...because they were burnt on the underside. The entire meal left me with a burnt after-taste that the mint they provided with the bill helped "attempt" to get rid of. This was a very beautiful and quaint little restaurant but very disappointing that they were so stingy on the food. I'm reluctant to go back in fear of leaving hungry again. read more

Sweet restaurant with good food. I was introduced by friend of owner. I made a reservation online and was flying in from St. John's. We made reservation for 7:30 ( open 5-9pm) and reservation platform says they will hold for 30 minutes. We were delayed but I called at 7:40 pm to say we were on the way. I was prepared to order take out if there was a problem but no pick up and left a message. Arrived just before 8pm and was told kitchen closes at 8pm. I was astounded. It's possible I overlooked some detail on the website but the immediate exchanges of staff were not helpful or representing service experience. They offered nothing. Just kept disappearing to produce another staff member who then said it was now after 8pm! We indicated that we would have ordered take-out but they said perhaps we called wrong number?... it's their number on my phone. Finally, we asked if they could make a recommendation. They suggested another restaurant up the street. It was a short walk in the rain but it was closed! We googled restaurants in the area and chanced walking in on Eliot and Vine. We were greeted with a smile and 'can-do' attitude. The food, service and atmosphere were superb! read more

Would not go there again. We went on a December night and it was cold. The heat was not turned on when we got there. We asked to have it turned up and nothing changed. We ate the meal which was quite good but by the time we left we were all frozen. Other guests complained as well but nothing was done but to turn on a fire place that threw no heat. The taste was decent for greek food in N.S but I'm afraid the wait time for the delivery time was relatively slow compared to other Nova Scotian restaurants. Secondly, the portion of food was significantly less than we expected with a cost much more than expected. We ordered a fairly extensive and varied takeout order for 8 (appetizers/entrees/sides) that was perfectly done. A couple months ago, I placed a lunch delivery order for myself and 2 coworkers. We ordered a veggie pita, chicken pita and lamb pita. Some time later, I got a call to let me know their deliveries were running behind, and they'd throw in some baklava for each of us to make up for it. I appreciated the call and the gesture of free dessert. Our lunch arrived 45 minutes late and was delivered by Jimmy Z. himself. He was very apologetic. While an on-time delivery would have been great, we weren't too upset about it. Last week, one of my coworkers placed another delivery order. When Jimmy Z. arrived with her order, he made a point to talk to the three of us who ordered last time. He apologized again for what had happened (two months beforehand!) and said he wanted to make things right by bringing us complimentary lunches the following day. He remembered what we had ordered, and offered to add greek salads and drinks on top of the pitas! We were blown away by his commitment to great customer service. Sure enough, the next day he arrived with our free lunches a few minutes before noon. Not only that, the following day he dropped in once more to check in and make sure we had enjoyed our meals. That is serious attention to detail, and we were so appreciative. You can bet we will be ordering again! And the food? Great. Greece is my favourite place on earth, and the food plays a major part in that. I love me some greek food. My chicken pita was fresh and tasty in both cases. It was well constructed, which I appreciate - sloppy pitas are not my jam. My greek salad was delicious as well. As a matter of personal taste, I'd prefer a tzatziki with more bite. Although those around me in close quarters at work for the rest of the day would probably prefer I did not consume massive amounts of garlic, so... All in all, I am very impressed with Blue Olive - both in quality of food and customer service. I'll be ordering again, and hopefully I'll make it to the restaurant to dine in sometime soon. read more

I was really disappointed when the previous iteration of this restaurant, It's All Greek to Me suddenly closed over the holidays. However,there's good news, as the Zelios family has a new version of their old haunt now open under the name the Blue Olive. Honestly, I don't really know what the situation is with the change, but I can attest that the food is the same high quality as it was at IAGTM, so I'm happy to have this restaurant back in my rotation of favorites. Service seems to be a main priority right now, as we were promptly welcomed in and seated by staff. Jimmy, a face that's familiar to past IAGTM patrons, is on hand to manage the place, and he's definitely putting his personal touch on service. He spent time greeting everyone and ensuring that they were getting exactly what they needed. The additional waitresses are nice enough, but seemed a bit meek and mild. There are a few minor changes inside - new chairs, new linens, and a fresh coat of paint. It's bright and airy, yet still feels homey and welcoming. Win. So onto the food. The menu has all the traditional options you'd expect, and they are keeping things simple, so there isn't an extensive list of options. I wanted to compare my favourite dish against expectations, so I ordered the Chicken souvlakii plate. It was delicious, as expected! I think that they still have the best potatoes and Greek salad in town, hands down. The skewers were awesome, too. I'm at 4 stars right now just because I want to wait it out and make sure things really do hold up over the long term here. A delightful Saturday evening dinner with friends. As always, I was looking for a place that did Gluten Free. Recommended by a Celiac friend. Wife had the salmon and it was superb! Done just right and great care taken to make sure it was not touched by the dreaded gluten. I had the Ravioli Santorini and it was incredible. Nice Greek salad on the side. I love Greek food and I can't get enough of it! The more garlic the better I say! To be honest - I wasn't very pleased with my meal. Which was kind of disappointing, but I'll explain the 4 star rating in a sec. I ordered spinakopita as an app - because anything wrapped in phyllo and deep fried is friggin delicious. The phyllo pastry was cooked perfectly - golden brown on the outside and crispy, unfortunately the spinach filling was still cold. =( Then my main came - chicken souvlaki of course - you can really tell the good Greek places from how they make their souvlaki. It was cooked well, but lacked any kick or something 'extra' - also, there wasn't enough garlic for my liking, but to each their own - I like a lot. The roasted lemon potatoes were really good though. I would've normally gave this a 3 star review, but! Something happened when I got my bill that made me bump it to 4 stars. The owner - not the chef, not the manager and not the assistant - the owner came over, asked me how my meal was and if I was full and it was to my liking. Even though my experience was mediocre, he was just so damn nice I couldn't help but tell him it was excellent. A genuinely nice guy going around and making sure his patrons were happy. Blue Olive was recommended to me by my Classics Professor as one of two Greek restaurants that actually taste authentic in Halifax. My fiancé and I decided to check this place out since we've never had Greek food before and are planning a trip to Greece for next year. There's been no turning back since! The restaurant itself is a cute little spot. It's small, but they somehow make the space work really well. The service is great, our waitress was very patient with us as we tried to figure out what we wanted and she even helped us decide by explaining the menu as well as letting us know what she recommends. She was also very on the ball for topping up our drinks and checking in on us just enough that she was not being a bother nor was she ignoring us. The owner is also very nice too. Always willing to have a conversation. Very friendly. The food was awesome! We ordered a dip plus two main meals to share and enjoyed every bit of it. The servings were a decent size and we left with leftovers. Since that first visit, we have ordered delivery multiple times and have never been disappointed. Plus, the delivery is only $2 (not sure if that's a set cost or based on location though)! We have also taken our family there when they came to Halifax for a visit and they decided this will be one of the go-to places to eat whenever they visit. The price in pretty on par with other Greek restaurants in Halifax. I haven't tried other restaurants yet to know portion sizes, but I'm happy with Blue Olive. All in all, I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone looking to get their Greek fix! Oh, and as a little tip, there's usually coupons for this place on Groupon so check that out! read more

With family in town and the need for a nice bite to eat, we headed to the Blue Olive on Quinpool. As with my previous experience picking up take out here, the staff are very friendly and attentive. We ordered wine to start and a platter of appetizer samples to share and it arrived fairly quickly, though it was a bit small for the price. A nice touch was the slightly charred thin sliced baguette with olive oil to munch with our first glass of wine. Our main dishes were more substantial. I branched out from my typical lamb or chicken souvlaki and tried the freshly house made spinach ravioli with a really delicious citrus cream sauce and sundried tomatoes on top. A smaller dish, reflecting the fact that the pasta is high quality, this doesn't come with any sides. It was perfectly balanced between decadent with the cream sauce, and freshly constructed so it didn't seem overwhelmingly rich. Overall, the service is friendly and attentive, the setting is cosy with attractive lighting fixtures, and you're getting a white tablecloth experience suitable for the inlaws without breaking the bank. You can also start with a carafe of wine instead of a whole bottle, and stick with it or switch to another wine if you're trying to appeal to multiple tastes without ordering by the glass. A recent visit was deeply disappointing. My wife and I had enjoyed this place quite a few times before when it was under a different name. They closed, then reopened- we heard they had overextended. Then we heard the mother had returned to take control- we re-visited and it was fabulous. But our last visit shows that things have once again awry- the calamari we once loved was so rubbery we decided it was best suited to bouncing around a squash court at best- it would help shake off the breading that had been soaked in borderline rancid oil.The lamb souvlaki that was once distinguished by high quality lamb that literally melted in the mouth was replaced by the stringy lamb found at your typical bad greek joint. The greek salad was mediocre, and the olives that I once thought were extraordinary were replaced by canned garbage you can get anywhere. Our waiter was nice enough, but excused the bad calamari by saying they were just so busy. Well, that's no excuse, and anyone who has worked in any good restaurant will tell you so. You can't fool your original customers. Get it together, or you will loose a once loyal following. Might be worth pointing out that the son, who often seemed to be there in the past, and always seemed charming and on top of things, was absent from the room. I just went back to this restaurant after years of absence. I have to say it's just as really nice as I rememberd. And I don't mean 'nice' in a bad way. I love the cozy atmosphere, the great service, and really GOOD food. I recalled hat I had just happened upon this place not long after it opened when going with my Mom for a lunch treat. This week I am on training - where to go?...so I suggested this place and a few of us went. I was nervous at first since it was my call but no worry, I soon realized they were still doing it right. Food - A few of the guys got the Souvlaki Pitas and a couple the pan fried haddock and while that item may not be Greek, it is very good. The Lamb Pita folks raved. Price Point - right on; felt we both won. Service - The waitress was very good, especially when I told her we were limited to a 1pm return. Hands down, the best greek food I have ever tasted. I've had the Chicken Soulvaki twice now and both times everything I ate had lots of rich flavour. Potatoes and rice are often bland. These were sensational. Good enough to eat them plain on their own. Chicken was cooked perfectly. Tzatziki sauce was great. Greek salad was amazing. Dinner was so good I had to try desert so I had the rice pudding. Also amazing. The atmosphere is also very nice and elegant. Feels like you're back at home in Athens eating kalamata olives by the fire place over a glass of wine with your prettiest misses. Great place for a date! 5 out of 5 stars. read more

We only had two minor issues -- the first order had too much sauce on the donair, so we ordered it the next time on the side and it wasn't included. We went there last week and used our Local Dine Deck cards. The food was 4 stars. Unfortunately the service was far less... First Greek restaurant I have ever been to that did not have a Meze feast. C'mon..... Secondly, and more importantly, our server spent all if 10 seconds with us. We waited forever to order, and then once we did a group of 4 say beside us. They ordered 10-15 min after we did. They got all of their food and were paying when we finally got our appetizers. Not impressed with the waitress there. That should not have happened. Our appetizer was only the sampler. Oh and apparently if you order that one you only get 2 of the things that are wrapped in grape leaves. The quality was amazing, but the dishes were TOTALLY OVERPRICED WHEN COMPARED TO THE AMOUNT IN YOUR PORTIONS. LOVED THE FOOD, but will NEVER return because of the overpriced dishes, and horrible customer service. That waitress was more concerned about a 4 person group than a couple having a nice dinner. read more

I, too, only tried Blue Olive's takeout service and cannot attest to the dine-in option. Being a lover of Greek food, I purchased a Groupon for the restaurant in the summer. I had good experiences with It's All Greek to Me and was saddened by the restaurant's demise, so I hoped that Blue Olive would satisfy in the same manner. I ordered the cheese phyllo appetizer, with moussaka, rice, potatoes, and Greek salad as the entree. It took approximately 15 minutes for my order to arrive, and I was pleased to see that everything was packaged separately and not clumped together in a giant mush. With that being said, I found the fare to be...well, pretty bland. The phyllo pastry was probably the most flavorful aspect of the meal, with the moussaka being the worst I've ever had - there was almost no way to distinguish it from the accompanying rice and potatoes, which were unremarkable. I love moussaka, so this was a pretty big letdown. I'm glad that I did not pay full price for my meal. I don't think I'll bother going back to Blue Olive. I see that others have had positive experiences, so if you give it a shot I wish you luck. read more
