I just had a slice of their TOMATO PIE & some of their POTATO SALAD. Both were excellent & went well together!

If you've been to the Charleston Farmers Market on a Saturday morning, you have probably seen Blue Pearl's large stand and met the delightful owner, Blueberry Sherry. Her winning personality convinced me to visit the actual farm and I enjoyed it. I went at the tail-end of the season so the blueberries weren't huge, but it was fun to pick them fresh and agonize over eating them fresh or putting them in the pail. All the products at the market are also available at the farm - honey, blueberry compote, BBQ sauce, hand salve, lotion, and a delightful organic bug repellent. I want sure what to expect with Blue Pearl Farms. I follow them on Instagram and had seen their pics of blue crabs, blueberries and a pup and was interested to see this place for myself. While they haven't paid the fees to be certified organic, they are an organic practice farm. It's a decent hike, especially coming from West Ashley, about an hour. If you don't appreciate just getting out for a bit OR if you're expecting a big store, save your gas and just meet them at one of the farmer's markets. For me (who also grew up out on a little farm), I found it relaxing to walk around the blueberry plants and little pond. There are also bees on site and you can sample their 3 different types of honey. One was a honey gathered by the blueberry plants (bees gather pollen from the plants closest to them, hence moving them to locations by certain plants). They also had a honey that was very light and citrusy. We took home a jar of those two. This place also sells plants, mostly herbs and blueberry plants. The owners were on site and we learned a good bit about blueberry plants and some of the ways they avoid pesticides (purple martin housing for example!). And of course you can buy blueberries. They are unlike the ones you buy in the store; they are so much better. Big, juicy, great flavor. You'll want to try them if you like blueberries! read more

Blue Pearl Farms is located in McClellanville, but they're out at the Charleston Farmers Market each week. If you're feeling like harvesting your own blueberries or honey (with their professional help), make the trek to their farm. Blue Pearl has their own bees and make different types of honey. We picked up a kiwi honey at the market this past weekend and it's light and smooth and has an interestingly sweet flavor. Definitely an original and at a great price for $6. They also have blueberries out at their farm and make an inanely good blueberry compote. I'm not particularly into blueberries, but I have eaten almost half the jar in two days. You've got to try it! It's good on waffles, yogurt, ice cream, you name it. They also make a sweet blueberry BBQ sauce that has a kick at the end. read more
