St John Bar and Restaurant - Roast Bone Marrow and Parsley Salad

A real food nerd's destination and an open mind is needed to be able to order and experience the offal and off cuts that reclaim some English, classic dishes. It's important to do a little research because the dishes served are not things often seen on menus, especially American menus. The bone marrow and welsh rarebit are classics and a must. The crab on toast is another menu mainstay; the whole brown crab is the alternative for those willing to put more work in. The green sauce is also ever present with the a daily fish. Our table went offal with the gizzard salad (wow, so tender and the dressing had good zing), rissole (mince meat croquet that packed intense meat flavor), roasted heart special (the cut was packed with umami and had a nice balance of toothsome and tenderness), and the cockles bacon and samphire (wonderfully smoke from the bacon and grass and salt in the sea beans). Service was pleasant and straightforward, but it was the food that really shined for us. A wonderful meal with the madelines being a nice finishing touch.

Listen. St John is not for the faint of heart. It really helps to be an offal enthusiast…read more I had to start with the bone marrow, since it was Tony's favorite. Then my partner and I shared a green salad (don't skip it, the dressing is amazing and full of umami) and I ordered the snails and sausage. I wanted to be blown away but my first bite was a snail and it was so gritty, I felt like I had a mouth full of sand. That really put me off. The rest of the bites were fine but I was leery with each mouthful. My partner ordered the blood cake and loved every bite. The eggs were cooked perfectly. For dessert, I opted for the brown bread parfait. It's incredibly interesting but I'll never order it again. Ever. It was unpleasant, but well executed. Just entirely not for me. Service is prompt and helpful, if not a bit brusque. It matches the stark interior nicely. St John does an amazing job, I just think maybe it wasn't for me. I'd recommend it for others but would be unlikely to return.

Baby back ribs: not necessarily fall of the bone type of ribs, but if you give it a good tug , some of the meats will slide off its axis. I enjoyed it for what it's worth. Obviously, the smoker is limited in scope , so I'm not expecting Texas style quality. Was a little chewy in some places, but also tender in others. Had a preference for the chiptole bbq sauce rather than the hickory. Fries were mostly good (minus the tiny bits). So close to the meats, the fries absorbed some of the smokiness flavor. Slaw: low-point of the bbq. They used way, way, too much dressing. Like it was flooded. Also the cabbage wasn't cut finely, but presented as whole chunk slices. Would definitely not recommend this one. Overall minus the slaw, I enjoyed Bodean's

I wanted something with at least one good veggie option, they wanted something with meat, and it had to be somewhere in-between Camden and Canary Wharf, not too pricey, and ideally close to the city because otherwise our Italian friend probably wouldn't make it. And lo and behold.... THE FAT BEAR!!! It was all we wanted and more! This place is sort of tucked away and up some stairs above a pub. It's really just a room and a half, which makes it super cozy and they have a pretty awesome looking bar. It's got warm lighting which makes the atmosphere really nice. Their cocktails were delightful and the service was excellent. I will make a very strange observation that someone working there had a very drunk friend who just sort of made herself at home. Then more joined and it turned into me watching this table of really really drunk people trying to order food. Two of them ended up just falling asleep. It was super strange. Anyway, me being distracted aside, I really loved the cocktail I ordered- Sloe Boat To China, and everyone else seemed happy with theirs. I was dying to try the pimiento cheese starter and the fried pickles. The cheese was particularly sharp and delicious. The pickles were good, but quite skinny (I mean come on, you're in an American restaurant I was expecting some serious pickles). The vegan gumbo was super spicy and delicious. I was impressed and enjoyed it. My husband dropped the ball and ordered the regular jambalaya (with sausage) rather than the seafood one which broke my heart a little bit, because I really wanted to try it. You know, I guess that means we'll just have to come back. Oh also another bonus, this place has brisket which is really hard to find. I can't say how it tastes but my friend said he defo approves (am I becoming more British with these words, or just more annoying?) Anyway, to finish it off I had the oreo cheesecake which the bomb. I love oreos. And it tasted like oreo. So all was right with the world. A wonderful place to come if you have people who want to try American food, or if you have out of town Americans who are too scared to try other food, or if you have hungry friends that want to try cajun food, or if you just want to try some really yummy food.

We ordered the double smashed cheeseburger and the smoked bbq ribs which had Asian inspired seasoning on it. My cheeseburger was just ok. Although it had its own special sauce, it still tasted bland. Same for the ribs. It's definitely not true American BBQ. In terms of the place and service, 10/10. I loved the decor which displayed various jazz, blues and funk artists throughout time. The staff was really friendly and sparked up conversation when they realized we were visiting. We were there for lunch so I can't speak to the live music at night. Overall, I can see this as a go to place to hang out with friends and for the live music but I wouldn't rush to come here for food.

I ordered the basic cheeseburger and I don't think the meat was of particularly high-quality. Also, it was cold. I also ordered their limited time only roasty tater tots. When I went to pick them up, however, they had run out of tots, and so they gave me a pile of french fries that I could dip in the gravy. Not exactly the same thing, but I thought I'd give it a shot. The fries were cold, so it didn't really much matter. The gravy was also cold. The gravy would probably be good if it were served at room temperature let alone hot. Food temperature and quality aside, the right thing to do would have been to refund the cost of the tots, not try to substitute fries without my agreement. If I had the chance to do it over, I'd skip this place.

Located right across the street from the Gloucester Road station it's really easy to find. And around 12:30 on a Sunday there were plenty of seats. Byron's is modern, yet comfortable. Staff is friendly and they make up a mean burger. Both the Hubs and I ordered the BYRON Burger - with bacon, cheddar, shredded iceberg, tomato, red onion and Byron sauce. At £9.25 the dish doesn't come with fries which is a bit of a bummer, and in turn a bit expensive. But we made sure to add a couple sides to try. The fries (£2.95) were mighty tasty. The order come in a nice size bowl that's easy to share. We also ordered up the courgette fries (fried zucchini sticks) (£3.25). I didn't love these...I guess I'd rather just stick to fresh/crisp zucchini instead of fried. Hubs liked them though. We ended with milkshakes to go. Yum. We spent about £32 ($55) on two burgers, two sides and two shakes. Which, generally, is a bit expensive for us but overall - Byron's a really good meal. Burger was seasoned nicely and cooked as asked. Soft bun. And I'm usually not fan of "secret sauces" but this one is really tasty, don't go without it.
