We came a bit later in the afternoon, after a long day of walking around the nearby zoo and with my family of 8 people we were sat very quickly! The host and our waitress were incredibly friendly and helpful knowing we had 3 kids with us, all under the age of 7. I settled on the lamb naanwich with a side of yam fries and it was by far my best bite in Calgary! It was perfect and flavorful and I'll have to try to recreate it at home. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by super friendly staff who made me feel right at home. The atmosphere is unique, stylish, and exactly what you'd hope for in an independently owned gem. The menu is fantastic, but let me rave for a moment about the French toast--it was hands down one of the best I've ever had. Fresh berries and warm syrup. I had the tuna poke bowl, my husband and his friend both got the Southern chicken dinner, and another friend had the lamb gyro- everything we had was incredibly delicious! I cute little diner in Calgary to grab breakfast or brunch! There is a small lot in the backside of the diner with around 5 spots to park in but also a lot of metered street parking is available. The service was quick and friendly. The food was ordered and came out very fast. I opted for the Triple Double with cornbread and it was good! The cornbread was my favorite part of the dish. Not too sweet nor too dry. The rest of the dish was very average. There was nothing really special about the potatoes, bacon, sausage, or eggs. Blue Star Diner is very well known in Calgary. This place is a super popular restaurant and regardless what time you come, there will always be a line up. Note that Blue Star Diner isn't big. They do have a sister location: Dairy Lane Cafe. But I am guessing that there will be a line up there as well. Blue Star Diner unlike OEB and some other breakfast places they open till the evening - 10pm. So there is no rush if you want to eat here. Blue star is known for their breakfast items. Again breakfast menu is served all day so its not like you have to rush. I got the Braised Lamb hash. It came with toast (rye, sourdough or multigrain) and two eggs (soft, medium or hard). In the braised lamb there were caramelized onion, zucchini and other veggies along with hashbrown. The portion was huge and super filling. They were quite generous with the braised lamb. I did find the braised lamb very gamy. Other than that the dish was pretty good. Also note that at the end I saw the amount of oil left behind on the plate. Good thing I am not eating this every day. Not sure how healthy this dish can be. Overall, the dish was good. For the price $19.50. I would say it was quite reasonably priced. I think their popular items must be waffle and pancakes. I did notice a lot of people ordering it. Note that this place is called a diner, they do not have milkshakes.Too bad! I was hoping to grab milkshakes here. They do have alcohol and other interesting drinks. In terms of the decor: The place is quite small. It is clean and not too compact. Overall, good restaurant. good food. It's a nice little cozy eatery tucked away in this trendy little burb to downtown Calgary. Not sure what the area is called but none the less, if you're looking for an amazing breakfast, you won't be disappointed. On to the food... The eggs...where to begin. Let me sincerely state - I don't remember ever tasting an egg this good....or at least in a very long time. I mean, these stupid eggs were and are very memorable. Maybe it was just the way they cooked them....who knows...but wow. Perfectly seasoned, perfectly cooked....just delicious. The bacon, the toast, home fries...all amazing. The French toast was also worth noting. I LOVE syrup....who doesn't? that said, the French Toast absolutely can stand on its own. Amazing. This diner is where probably anyone should be going if you are a fan of one. Its quite simple and elegant and lots of options to choose from. Love the interiors, including the bar area - and yes you could have drinks in the morning too! the staff is quite friendly and will probably keep pouring coffee if you would like. the brunch scene is quite bold and very instagrammable if that's is what you thing is. but nevertheless, the food is very tasty and worth the money. it could get busy very quickly considering weekends - even around 9am on a saturday but then they are good at handling the customers. so you don't have to turn away. Great food and great staff. We stopped for breakfast before hitting the road and I'm glad we did. Things were pretty straightforward as far as the menu went, along with a couple of twists. The breakfast plate I had was more than enough. Loss of a star for bacon that tasted like nothing and left both I and my partner confused. He had the oats and commented that it was very "healthy" - in a good way The staff was great too. Our server already had the ketchup and hot sauce out without me needing to ask, it was as if she read my mind (about the hot sauce). And when my partner realized he'd ordered the wrong type of milk for his oatmeal (he is on a FODMAP eating plan due to IBS), she was happy to change it from oat milk to almond milk, no questions asked. Brought a party of 6 conference presenters from around the globe here for supper on a Sunday, but didn't have reservations. 20 minute wait... sure thing, the patio was vacant, we took it over and gabbed and enjoyed the sunshine for a bit. Our table was ready, and we were happily seated and offered beverages. What a selection - Village cider for me please! Local brewery beer on tap - yup! What a menu... sooo many gluten free options, it's tough to make up your mind. So I agreed to share fish & chips and the chicken and waffle (not Nashville style) with one of our party. Wow. Just Wow. I haven't had gluten free fish and chips that good in YEARS. Decades if I'm really being honest. Crisp, tender, perfectly cooked fish, melted in your mouth, and what kind of fries? Well, you can choose from Dirty (kind of poutine-like), citrus, kimchi, and I lost track after that - it's a tough choice from just those three, but there's more! Other guests at the table had the bison chilli - said it was impressive, another the appy tacos - with a salad made it quite a meal. Mac & cheese, and there was no room for dessert. Heck we didn't even have a thought to ask for the menu. So I'll have to come back again! Service was attentive, but not too attentive. Take-away containers are compostable paper, even the cups for the ranch dressing/dips. They provide gender neutral washroom facilities, and the sign on the wall says accepting of all. This place is a hidden gem in Bridgeland. They don't have a big fancy sign or even turn the lights on during the daytime for that matter. Small restaurant about 10 tables. Wait times can be up to 1.5 hours. However, the food is worth the wait. I always switch it up on what I order. But I enjoy the apple chicken sausage amongst the homemade jam, the service is always great and I leave happy. Really shows in the photo that they cut the fruit fresh which is always a sign of a good kitchen. It is quite loud and your table is usually less than 2 feet away from your neighbors. I wouldn't recommend this as a date place as it's hard to hear each other. But breakfast/brunch, absolutely! read more

I can't believe I haven't written a review for Blue Star yet! This is my husband and I's favorite breakfast restaurant in Calgary. Their dinner is great as well but we mostly come for breakfast/brunch! It is the perfect local and homey breakfast spot. Everytime we walk in, it feels like home from the great service to just the small size of the restaurant. My ol faithful order is the BSD Bowl with scrambled eggs and a side pancake. Thank me later! Looking to pass some time and a place to have 2nd breakfast, we wandered into Blue Star. Surprisingly, there wasn't a line even at prime brunching hour but we weren't complaining. We hopped up by the the bar and glanced over the menu as we sipped our teas & coffees. My sis and I decided to split the fried chicken and pancakes, and her fiancé got a bowl of their Thai curry soup. The turnover is pretty quick here, I think it's due to their speedy service.
