Save your time and your money. The pt looked like she had slept in her clothes and rolled into work. Seemed bothered that she couldn't activate my pain more with simple requests like lift your leg. Had not reviewed my xrays and was unaware of any doctor notes. Then I very clearly told them I was cash pay. They charged me $81. I was there 23 minutes so that seemed adequate even with the pathetic care. Was given a brochure on spine strength, a paper with 2 exercises on it and left. Just got an additional $396.36 cent bill‍. For what? Conversely went to chiropractor next day. Dr figured out in a few minutes what was causing pain. After one week 75% improvement. Saw chiropractor 5 times bill was still less than one pathetic visit here. Do not recommend read more

Beware. You will be nickeled and dimed. You are nothing more than insurance and copay's at this practice. They cram patients in to maximize their profits. You will wait past your appointment time. It took three visits before we were told what our issue was, even though we had asked at every visit. The question was side stepped. The 1st MRI ordered by our Family Doctor, for which we were required to hand deliver to their office, was wholly ignored. They required a 2nd MRI with contrast. They never even looked at the first one to deem it unacceptable, we were asked if it was with contrast and when the answer was no, they said they required one. After the 2nd MRI, they required X-Rays. The 1st set of x-rays they performed in error on the wrong hip. We were not told until the next visit, and then had to repeat the X-rays. They recommended a diagnostic injection of Lidocaine to ensure it was really the hip causing issues, because apparently 2 MRI's and multiple sets of X-rays couldn't have told that tale. When we told them that Lidocaine was used before the contrast and it worked on the pain, we were ignored and the diagnostic injection was done. We were told that 'if' it worked, then it would help for up to 4 hours. We asked if we were to follow up the next day, but were told to come back in three weeks. Three weeks of more excruciating pain because they were booked. When they finally agreed it was the hip which had the 2 MRI's and multiple X-rays, we were told we needed a CT Scan to show the doctor how to do the surgery the day of, and an EKG to clear us for surgery. The day of the CT Scan and EKG, we were booked across town for each. After a 2 hour wait, and being made late to the EKG that they had booked at the other facility 25mins away, we were told that the hip brace we needed to pick up for the day of the surgery was not available without measurements and an order. We let them know that the office had said to just pick it up and pay. We were again declined service and told we needed to go to the office and have them give us the hip brace. After the EKG and driving back across town (with the $4.49/gal gasoline), we made it to the main office next door to the CT Scan and surgery facility. We told the front desk staff that we needed a brace. They said we needed to go next door. When we told the younger woman that they had sent us over there for fitment, she rolled her eyes. The other lady let us know she called upstairs and to please have a seat. We had a form with us which needed a signature for Short Term Disability for the 6-8 weeks of no work Dr. McGonagle told us we would need after the surgery. We were given a packet to fill out as their policy on forms had recently changed. When reviewing the form, we noted that this 3rd party ShareCare was a pay per form of $35 plus taxes, and was not eligible for HSA or FSA as they were not a medical provider. At this point, we had had enough. We asked for an office manager. The young front desk person again rolled her eyes and grabbed a phone to speak on to ignore us. The other person said she would call "Shonda," and picked up the phone. She asked me if it was okay to know what it was in regard to. We told them that the additional fee to access the medical opinion of our doctor was unacceptable. We said we would like to address their management as we knew that the policy was not something within their purview and we didn't want to take anything out on them. The office person thanked me for that, and called Shonda. Shonda came down within 2 mins and we asked her if we could speak somewhere more privately as there were a lot of patients waiting and we did not want to upset others with our concerns. Shonda met with us upstairs in an exam room. We related that after paying so much money for the visits, and for the money we were paying between our insurance and copays that we found the additional paywall for Dr McGonagle's medical opinion unacceptable. Shonda politely disagreed, and said that we were paying for a service. We related that this was not Midas, and we did not walk in and point at a sign for the $89.95 brake special. This is patient care at a medical practice. We paid for Dr. McGonagle's medical opinion and it was his opinion that we needed surgery; which we fully accepted. It was his medical opinion that after the surgery we would be unable to work for 6-8 weeks. Now we would have to pay to get his signature on a form that excused us from work for that time, and guaranteed short term benefits. We said that the practice was a customer of ShareCare, and that we were a customer of the practice. We would not be paying ShareCare on behalf of the practice to receive the rubber stamp of our doctor's name on the form. We didn't care whether the practice or Dr. McGonagle paid the fee, but we were not. This was a condition of us not doing surgery with this practice and them forgoing all future money. Ultimately, we fired this practice. Patient care is not here. read more

In 2013 I was told I need a spinal fusion had that done still had pain Dr Hunt convinced me I was fixed for two years. I still had pain. He denied my disability. He told me I needed a mental evaluation. Turns out I needed two hip replacements as well he totally overlooked went to schedule my hip surgery. They canceled on me four times. Kimberly in the office is the rudest lady I've ever met in my life she lied about my scheduling said she left me several voicemails. I checked my phone provider and my voicemails never received a phone call from her. She left One voicemail got back to her immediately she said they had to reschedule my surgery. My second time they canceled on me. There was no reason the third time no reason the fourth time they said I needed a heart echo which they did not wait for the results. They canceled me again. They didn't give me enough pre-op time before surgery totally unethical. Unorganized never had any issues like this with any other doctor blatantly will lie to cover their tracks. I expect pain with any operation or procedure but to be told you don't have pain and you are mentally unstable because they miss something is totally unethical. I have been a customer of these surgeons for over 20 years from acl surgery, Achilles surgery, bicep surgery and have never had any problems rehabbing from an injury. For the past 10 years I've had several knee injections in my right knee and gel injections. In early 2024 Dr Huff determined that my right knee was ready for a replacement, shots had stopped working. In July 2024 Dr Huff did a total right knee replacement. I started physical therapy shortly after and my knee wouldn't heal, severe swelling and bruising persisted for months after surgery. I looked like I had been beaten with a baseball bat after surgery, every person that would see me in physical therapy thought I had been in a car wreck! After several months I started breaking out with a rash in my hair, in my ears and nose, all over my face and body. I went to a dermatologist and got tested and testing showed that I am allergic to chrome and my implant is chrome plated! The only cure is to remove the implant and replace it with anything but chrome. Was directed to see Dr Schafer who is their revision specialist surgeon. Our meeting didn't go well, he was very rude and unprofessional. He said that I should have never had knee replacement, my knee wasn't bad enough to justify replacement. "Said that Bluegrass Orthopedics took my Cadillac knee out that god gave me and put a Prius implant in that I would never be happy with ". "Bluegrass Orthopedics doesn't agree with the allergy diagnosis that he believes that I'm just a disgruntled client that will never be happy ". He was purposely trying to piss me off because he said several times "I'm probably gonna make you mad with my statement ". I do want to thank Dr Schafer for one piece of advice, he wanted me to go to Rochester Minnesota Mayo Clinic to have bloodwork done and fluid drawn from my knee for testing before he would agree to do a revision surgery because he was afraid that something was being missed! He said the only hospital he would trust was the Mayo Clinic no one else. I contacted the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and arranged an appointment for labs the appointment didn't happen until August 2025 (13 months after surgery this is really important). Mayo Clinic determined what we already knew, I'm allergic to the implant and also found that the implant wasn't put in correctly the geometry was way off! On December 29th 2025 the Mayo Clinic replaced my implant with a hardened titanium implant that my body isn't allergic to and after 9 days I'm already ahead of where I was 1 year post op at Bluegrass Orthopedics! Medical malpractice lawsuits have to be filed before 1 year in the state of Kentucky and it is my belief that Bluegrass Orthopedics purposely puts patients off and makes it really difficult to get answers when they know something is wrong! I will never go anywhere but the Mayo Clinic from now on, they have given my life back and I'm going to make a full recovery! You have lost me as a client Bluegrass and I will do everything I can to make sure others know how you guys treated me when I needed you the most! After my last visit with Dr Schafer not one person has reached out to me from Bluegrass Orthopedics to check on my knee, that was 1 year ago! I think that speaks volumes! read more

When it comes to peace of mind when I seek medical treatment, I'm pretty thorough. I was referred to Bluegrass Orthopaedics from Urgent Care. With X-rays in hand, I visited this location to figure out the ankle situation. Just know: social distancing and mask wearing were reinforced from check-in to being escorted to the exam rooms. My doctor was warm and had a great bedside manner. He reviewed the x-rays, my ankle, and gave me several treatment options. Everything started out good with Dr. Huff, however, I followed the instructions given to me in a packet of pre-surgery and post surgery information. I was almost to the date of surgery, September 4th, and had completed everything needed for pre-surgery when I went into adrenal crisis and ended up in the hospital. This was due to stopping my prednisone two weeks before surgery, which I have since found out is not a good idea. When questioned by Dr. Huff's surgical schedule manager why I had done that, meaning stopping my prednisone two weeks prior to surgery, I responded "because it said on here (papers I have from them) steroids were to be stopped two weeks before surgery." I got the reply "yes, but did you see where it said prednisone". I responded "prednisone is a steroid." We went through that two or three times and it was a useless conversation as it turns out. This surgery schedule manager set up an appointment to see Dr. Huff in office again. Originally I did set it up, but the more I thought about it, I changed my mind and canceled the appointment. The episode of adrenal crisis was very scary because it is very serious and potentially fatal. I lost a chunk of time during all that as well and that was scary. A few days later this surgery schedule manager called me back and said Dr. Hoff felt comfortable doing surgery if I could get my prednisone down to 10 mg., but I would need to show that I had worked this out with my rheumatologist and I would need to see him. An appointment was set for November 4th, two months to the day from when I was originally scheduled for surgery. Mind you I have two knees that are shot a right hip and a right shoulder as well. I've got to have replacements for all of these parts and being mobile or pain-free is no longer a part of my life. I thought we were going to get started and make some progress. I went to my Rheumatologist and we set up a schedule which was sent to the surgery schedule manager at BGO and by the time I saw him for the November 4th appointment, I was down to 5 mg of prednisone per day. Doctor Huff was kind and we discussed that we we're going to move ahead with the surgery and I was not going to have to redo all the pre-surgery things that I had already done for the first scheduled surgery. We would just be going straight into surgery. I waited to get a call about scheduling surgery and didn't receive anything. I emailed the surgery schedule manager asking when this was going to happen. I got no response. I also called several days later and left a voicemail asking for a call back regarding surgery because it's getting close to the end of the year and I would actually be able to afford the surgery. I got no response from the voicemail message. I waited, trying to be patient and called again today, November 20th. I had to leave another voicemail, but she returned my call only to tell me that Dr. Huff had decided that I had too many other health issues and he was going to refer me to someone else in their practice who dealt with more serious cases. I was told that someone who worked with that doctor would be in touch. The reason I'm leaving this review is because I do have other medical issues going on. I do have a heart condition, but had received clearance from my cardiologist to have the surgery. I do have asthma and I have rheumatoid arthritis, hence the need for joint replacement. All of this information was in my paperwork from the very beginning. This is why I can't understand why I'm being pawned off to a different doctor. I doubt I will have very little luck getting surgery because the end of the year is a few short weeks away. Based on my experiences to date, I've had difficulty getting any information or responses in a timely manner from this practice. I don't hold out a lot of hope. My health insurance will completely change at the beginning of the year and, as a result, it will be several months before I can afford to have surgery. I also wanted to get moving forward on getting replacement parts as I need several. I don't understand what changed either. The doctor did not read any of my medical information before this past week evidently or for whatever reason he doesn't want to deal with me now. I'm very disheartened, but I'm also very upset and angry. I have seen this so many times Where doctors do not listen to you when you are trying to discuss things with them because it's hopping from one patient then as quickly as possible to the next patient and so on and so on and so on. Well, that's not a very good standard of care and as a result, I am left hanging and at this point, I don't know what to expect. If anyone from Bluegrass Orthopedics reads this, I probably will not be hearing from anybody there, but this is what has happened and I can't comprehend why. Bluegrass Orthopaedics does not mention they do the gel injections for the knee. In April 2024, I had a left total knee replacement by Dr. Denehy. Over a year later, I continue to have discomfort in the left knee And apparently there is nothing to be done about that. I was to have had the right knee total replacement, but after the discomfort with the left knee, I investigated the gel injections with Daniel Butcher, PA. He explained what he would do and how and provided all the information I needed to pursue the injection for the right knee. It did take me about three weeks before I actually got Relief. Had I known how much this jail injection can improve a person's quality of life, I would have never had a total knee replacement. I am now three months out from the injection and no way I would ever consider surgery again. I highly recommend this and I highly recommend Daniel Butcher, to do the procedure. The reason they don't push this procedure is totally due to money . Perhaps surgeons and PA's are instructed to not mention this inexpensive procedure. read more

If I'm rating Dr. Schaeffer then my rating would be 5 stars. He did an excellent job with both shots for my knee and total knee replacement for my left knee... However, The doctor I had before Dr. Schaeffer wasted both my time and money with surgery on a knee that really needed replacement. AND one of the main reasons for my single star rating is their process for scheduling appointments and surgery. Multiple significant mistakes were made scheduling my surgery which were only corrected with me showing up at the office with no appointment. None of the people supporting the doctors for scheduling ever answer the phone. They expect the Customer to be available for them and never pick up when it is convenient for the Customer. They only return calls when it is convenient for them. Both Lexington Clinic and Baptist Health handle patient/Customer calls and scheduling much much better. read more

While the staff and doctor was very nice and the Doctor very knowledgeable, the billing department is very inept. After having my surgery, and giving them both my insurances, they seem to forget to bill the secondary insurance, I called and got that issue fixed with the doctors office. When I went to their surgery center, and specifically told the intake clerk to make sure my secondary insurance is in my record, yet I am now getting bills that have not been submitted to my secondary again. Upon further inspection, it seems that the surgery center did bill my secondary and they paid them, but after 2 billing cycles can not manage to post this payment to my account. The best surgeons in town. This is the place to go for hip or knee surgery. But look elsewhere for physical therapy or at least ask about your cost before deciding. To me, $538.98 for an hour of PT is excessive ($192 after insurance). My spouse experienced more attention in a better environment at other PT groups in town. And for much lower cost. If I could give this practice 0 stars I would and would strongly advice reconsidering surgery through this clinic. My father received a knee replacement from Dr. Huff in January of 2022. Since that time, my father has been left with debilitating knee and back pain from a BOTCHED knee replacement. The office, doctor, and PA refused to take responsibility and continued to gaslight him into believing this was a normal experience. Not even a month post surgery, my father's wound opened leaving him with a significant portion of the scar unclosed. He saw his PA for a follow-up who told him this was normal and nothing to worry about. The wound proceeded to become infected which the PA refused to discuss with Dr. Huff. The surgeon only found out about the open wound when his physical therapist was so concerned, she sent a picture directly to Dr. Huff. The surgeon proceeded to tell my dad that it was superficial and again nothing to worry about. After some pushing, he finally took my dad into surgery to clean the infected wound which then left my dad using a WoundVac for months after. This greatly affected his physical therapy and now he has near constant swelling and the inability to move his knee properly. Due to the botched knee surgery, he began walking incorrectly which has caused severe back pain. The provider and office did nothing to help and continues to do nothing. Now 2 years later, my previously active and healthy father is barely able to carry out daily activities without disabling chronic pain. As someone who works in the medical field, this should be considered medical malpractice, however, they continue to state "the implant is intact." This office does not care about quality of life or patient follow-up. The only thing this office cares for is completing surgeries and sending the patient's out the door without proper care. If you care for your health or your loved ones, I would highly encourage you to seek another office that will provide proper follow-up care. read more

Bluegrass Orthopedics: A Cut Above (heh, heh)! (Less about the surgery and more about the follow up office visits) I've been taking my mom in periodically following hip surgery and BGO is a first-class operation by all standards. Just off Richmond Road, but beyond all the commercial areas, it's pretty much traffic free to get in and out of. The building is just a couple of floors and the surrounding parking lot rings the building, so you don't have to walk far to enter. When you first enter the building, there's a small information stand, with someone at the ready to direct you to the correct floor/office you need to find. Take the elevator to the BGO office on the second floor and you'll probably be surprised upon getting off the elevator that you will reach the reception desk in about six steps (very important for orthopedic patients for obvious reasons). All of the positives mentioned above all shine in stark contrast to the mega-medical facilities around town where buildings have just been added, lego-style over the years to decades old buildings, with mazes of interconnecting hallways, multiple elevator systems to navigate, and hundreds or thousands of yards to walk to get where you're going. After making the six steps from the elevator to the reception desk, you'll find that it's always fully staffed, so you're never standing in line at the reception desk (with aching limbs). There are usually three or staff members at the ready to check you in, which is excellent, since this is a high-volume office. After filling out/updating paperwork, if necessary, you can take seat in the waiting area, which is either 4 steps away or about ten, depending on which area in which you choose to sit. The wait has never been more than 10 minutes, which is remarkable these days. Today, we had an appointment for 9:15. Arriving a few minutes early, we were called back to the doc by 9:19. The doc arrived quickly, met and discussed issues with us, and we were out and back in my car by 9:32. Why all the details? Put yourself in the shoes (!) of someone recovering from hip surgery, and whether you'd rather go to a mega-medical facility with long hallways and long waits, or avoid those pain points (!) and be in and out in a half hour, never having had to walk more than 100 feet in and 100 feet back out. Within five minutes of meeting the doctor at Bluegrass Orthopedic, he was recommending and we were scheduling a procedure for a meniscus tear. Within five minutes. Because my pain dissipated, I had the time to go somewhere else and discover that degenerative meniscus injuries are commonplace and not necessarily improved with surgery. Triage nurse did not listen to my answers and wrote down an incorrect 'chief complaint' despite my asking her to correct the medical record. Now my med record has incorrect information. I had planned to discuss it with my doctor so he could correct it but his demeanor was even worse than hers. He may be very competent as a surgeon but his patient interaction stinks. He made it clear he wanted to be anywhere but where he was. He never examined me. He never gave me a chance to ask him questions or to discuss any additional problems with him. He may have spent five minutes with me and that is a generous estimate. He basically looked at my x ray and said this is is and here's a shot. Come back in a month. And he disappeared out the door. I was flabbergasted that I never got to ask a question or discuss my previous doctor's diagnosis which was different than his. Disgraceful state of medicine. read more

My husband was involved in a hit-an-run MVA the 1st of March this year resulting in a severe left shoulder and back injury. ER Doctor referred him to Bluegrass Orthopedics. His initial appointment with Dr Donnahue was made the next week which was great. He did see this Dr for approximately 5 min who recommended an MRI for the next week. Timeframe for appointments was still good! However since completing MRI testing my husband has had TWO appointments CANCELED by this Doctor's office with the reason being "Dr scheduled for surgery during your appointment time". This last appointment was suppose to be this coming Friday, 5 days from today. Why would a Dr's office schedule out patients on a day "planned for surgery"? My husband's injuries are life altering for him and our family and yet he continues to wait for another appointment months after his injury! In my opinion, CANCELING my husband's out patient appointment s TWO Months in a row for preplanned Surgery on the part of this Doctor is unacceptable practice. read more

Unbelievably hard to get appt., called, filled out online form, immediately returned missed call the next day (I was brushing my teeth), transferred several times, cut off. Called back, required to be put in touch with call center (???), even though on phone with Drs office, transferred back to Drs office, transferred again to another person, got voice mail. Called back several times got voice mail, always left message. Called back again, got message I was calling after business hours at approx 1:45PM, yet message said their business hours are Mon-Fri. 8-4:30??? Get it together!! I am in PAIN so bad. Needing the most knowledgeable medical info about knee replacement or alternative treatment for my torn meniscus and arthritic knee, I chose to wait six weeks to see Dr. D'Angelo, the knee specialist rather than one of the PA's. When I tried to call to see if there were earlier cancellations, I was put on hold for 30 to 45 minutes, and finally, indefinitely..so I gave up on that. But here's the kicker: My appointment day finally arrived and I carefully prepared my questions and concerns for Dr. D'Angelo. Not to be. Instead, the PA appeared and said that the doctor was "busy". When I told her how long I had waited to see this doctor, she said he was "in surgery." No one from the office called to let me know this. I find this rude and inexcusable. I agree with another patient who wrote that the place was run like an "assembly line". No respect. Its bad enough that downsizing is happening everywhere, even in the medical profession, but its worse that there is no respect or courtesy or apology, informing the patient ahead of time, or asking to change the appointment time. read more

The staff there is awful. It appears they have no clue about the doctors schedule because they had reschedule me 2 times as a new paitents at the very last minute... I had to make plans around those appointments. And now I cannot get a hold of the nurse, Sara. I called several times and left a message. After what seemed like 2 weeks, finally received a message back after several attempts. She only answer one of the several questions I have... This is not good when someone is in pain and has to fork over hard earn money for treatments. However, I met the doctor once and he seemed nice. read more

After being a patient here for several years with no negative experiences, today was a very bad experience. I originally had a 2pm appointment, at their request it was moved to 10:45 PM. I showed up at 10:30. At 12:15 I gave up and told told the receptionist I was leaving. She said, "Oh he's running way behind, so sorry". I just find it extremely rude and unprofessional that no one could take the time to come out and explain why the long wait. Sitting in a crowded waiting run during a Covid outbreak, not knowing if they've forgotten you or not is not the way to do business. read more

It seems like they're becoming a surgery factory and all they seem to care about is the money. We're perfectly willing to pay the FULL amount of my wife's arthroscopic surgery on the DAY of the surgery (or a reasonable estimate of our cost anyways) . They've been bugging her for weeks now wanting her to pay NOW, before the surgery. This is ridiculous Why would we pay before the service is rendered? Is the insurance company going to send them money before they provide the service? Uh, yeah right I don't think Anthem would do that. In like a million years. It's not like we don't have the money. We could pay today if we chose to. BUT WHY SHOULD WE PAY DAYS BEFORE THE SURGERY? They're acting like she already owes them the money and are threatening to cancel her surgery if she doesn't come in and pay, like now. WTF people. Is this what we're down to now? I would rate a 2.5 out of 5 stars on my experience with Bluegrass Orthopedics and handcare for the amazing surgeon who took care of me. The staff however I wouldn't recommend to nobody. I was recommended by a friend of mine to have a work related injury assessed and a possible surgery here. Dr. Vasicek was my surgeon, she was really enthusiastic and by far the best surgeon one could possibly ask for. Very knowledgeable in her field I felt very comfortable about Dr. Vasicek performing my shoulder surgery and there was never a moment of doubt. On the flip side, the staff at the establishment was sub par at best. I kept getting voicemail while calling about my forms that were needed to be filled for my short term disability. I would have rather been working but was completely disabled to do my job. My bills were piling up and I was in a constant state of stress. One month I had to sell my property to even make rent. Obviously her assistant didn't know I was single and I was responsible to pay bills. I was constantly notified about a Ten Business day waiting period about completion of said forms. Which meant 15 business days for a check to arrive (which meant I wouldn't be receiving any payment for almost a month, giving it would be around 21 days total) I've been back at work for over a month now and I'm still behind. I hope I never return to their care ever again and I warn those who were thinking of this office to weigh out the pros and cons. TLDR; great surgeon, horrible patient aftercare. read more

I had severe pain in my lower back and hip and could not sleep for three weeks. I finally found BGO and in sessions two times a week for three weeks the pain was nearly gone. Two more weeks and the pain was all gone. I was given maintenance exercises to do at home between appointments and maintenance exercises to follow up. The pain has not returned and maintenance exercises are only once per month. read more
