This review is on a particular barber from this shop..not the location itself!! I called this afternoon and made an appt with barber Marvin Williams for my sons at 4pm. While on the phone, he made an off color joke about man buns being for gays that I didn't appreciate..but I didn't hold it against him because that's his preference and I didn't know him. I found it odd that a barber would feel comfortable speaking that way to a new customer that he's never cut before. He didn't know me from a can of paint and it somewhat offended me. I should've listened to my inner voice because that was strike 1 of 3 of his unprofessionalism. My children were late getting there (I do take responsibility for that) but as of 4:55..Marvin Williams was no where to be found. I later found out from the lady I spoke with on the phone that he was never there and that at 4 he called to see if my sons were there. As of 5pm..he never showed. So my children left. Not 1 apology was issued and the owner was not present. Marvin also never called to say anything about rescheduling, etc. As a single Mother..my time and money is valuable, and I don't appreciate the unprofessionalism that was displayed. I was informed that the barbers here are independent contractors and that the owner has been informed several times about Marvin's unprofessionalism and has chosen to do nothing. My time was wasted and I don't appreciate that. There was no one else available to cut my sons hair. If he wasn't going to honor the appt HE MADE..I would've gladly given my money to another barber. Sad part is there was someone else waiting on Marvin to cut them as well and he was sitting waiting in the dark along with my children. Now I have to rush around for someone to cut them before Christmas. If Marvin answers the phone when you call, tell him no thank you and avoid this headache at all costs. read more

About the shop: Typical barbershop. Relaxed atmosphere, good music. My appointment was pretty early so there were only a couple of guys there and they were cool. The service: This was my 1st time going to Nolan (my current barber's out of commission for a couple of mos). He was friendly, professional, and took his time. He's a good barber, as far as fade skills. It's a clean fade, but unfortunately, this cut's an L. Here's why The cut: I showed Nolan a pic of the cut several times, he seemed like he had a good idea of it, and I told him I wanted a little off the top because it had gotten long. Should've known when my cut was running long, something was wrong. I thought he was just being meticulous, but truth is too much was getting chopped. When it was done and I looked at it, part of me was glad it was done and part of me was confused as hell - where did all my hair go?? When I got home and looked at it more I damn near wanted to cry, because I actually had a hairSTYLE. I walked in with an actual style that was about a year's worth of growth and shaping - I just wanted it cleaned up and a lil off the top, but walked out looking like I was ready for basic training. The fading is good, but the way he cut it, the hair's too high on the sides and too low in the middle of my head. It looks boxy from the front, it's too high in certain places, my lining is slanted and he just took wayyy too much off. So now I have to walk around for months hating my hair until it grows back and I can get it done right. You try to let barbers do their job without micromanaging them, because of mistakes other barbers made in the past, but if you trust that they know what they're doing and they don't, YOU'RE the one with jacked up hair. You end up with a cut you hate and money doesn't even factor into it because is a refund going to grow your hairline back? Is it going to give you your length back? I don't think Nolan's a terrible barber - I'm sure he's good at the cuts he knows, but this isn't one of them. This isn't what I asked for and it pretty much destroyed the style that I had. So now I have to start all over. Here are pics of how my cut usually looks and Nolan's cut. He's a cool guy, but I won't be going back. I'll just wait for my barber and let my hair grow into wilderness before I let another barber touch me. My advice? If you're looking at their pics, make sure they have a LOT of them and they've done the cut you're trying to get. If you show a pic, chances are they'll say they can do it, even if it's out of their wheelhouse, then proceed to practice on your head. Before they start cutting, talk to them for about 5 minutes about your hair goals, what you don't like (ie barbers always want to give me that sharp ass lining in the front and end up making it crooked), show them multiple pics, and tell them exactly how much length you want in inches. I've gone through 7 barbers in 4 years before I actually found one that's good (most can't really cut or just cut your hair the way they want instead of what you asked for). So although you don't want to hassle them, bump that - do what you gotta do to get the look you want. read more

Unfortunately, I had a very poor experience at Blue's Barbershop. When I came in, I gave Mr. Reese specific instructions to cut the previous dye out of my hair and make sure that my fade was extremely low. When I got home and saw my cut up close, I found that not only was neither of my requests completed, but I had painful long scratches along the back of my neck. When I came back the next day, Mr. Reese proved to be unprofessional and rude when handling my complaints. He implied that my scratches and concerns weren't serious enough to garner compensation or even a sincere apology. I love contributing to black-owned businesses in my community but poor customer service is UNACCEPTABLE in all forms. Please do better. read more

Been coming here since I was a boy. The lineup of barbers have changed over the years, I still like the spirit though. I don't like making reservations to get haircuts so was hanging out in the shop for a few hours. The conversation was enjoyable. As a young black man barbershop has been a sanctuary from the struggles of an oppressive world. This barbershop gives me good feels like when I watch the film Barbershop and see the community, communal affect and radical care that's being exchanged I'm optimistic about our city and country. Things I value when it comes to a haircut: Ambiance/culture of the shop, quality of the cut, customer service, length of time spent, price, location, conversation with the barber (some of these more important than others. short review: Ambiance: 3, not bad, but not too exciting. Quality of cut: 4 Customer service: 1 length of time spent: 1 price: 1 location: 4 conversation with the barber: 3 The story: This place is not bad...but it depends on what you're looking for. The men all do good quality work cutting hair, but it lost a few stars for me for a few reasons. I'm new to Hyde park and was looking for a place to take care of my beautiful locks (you know, all 3 inches or so). I read reviews and saw that it was a cheap cut, which is what I was looking for (i'm on a budget and was honestly considering just buzzing my own this time because even $15 feels like more than I wanted to spend right now). Sadly that wasn't the case. (scroll down if you just want to see the price) Around 4pm on a Saturday I called in advance to see if they what time they closed. He told me they normally close at six but just come in and he'll get me in. It sounded like they had barbers open from what he communicated. I headed over around 5pm figuring an hour was plenty of time to give him for the cut and not keep him after hours. Side note/context of my experience. I was hungry so I decided to order something online from Cafe 53 which is across the street. I included a message saying that I wouldn't arrive until between 5:40 and 6PM. So I walked in around 5:05PM. Each of the three barbers were giving someone a cut. No one said anything to me. Not one barber said "hi" or "welcome" or "are you here for a cut?" or "do you have an appointment?" or "were you the one I just talked to on the phone?" or "i'll be right with you!" or "have a seat, you'll be next" or "sorry we're full today" or anything. Just nothing was said. They all certainly looked up and saw me walk in, it was awkward and uncomfortable (this is coming from someone who rarely feels uncomfortable). So I sat down and waited next to a fella who seemed to be waiting for his buddy to finish his cut and maybe get a cut himself. I don't need any red carpet to be thrown out, but a simple acknowledgement that you see a customer is generally good practice. A really weird movie was playing, and the guys were talking about something so I jumped into the conversation. They responded and acknowledged my presence, but still nothing was said about a haircut. Sure I didn't ask at this point, but should I have to? One barber finished his cut and took the next guy (the only other person waiting) before me. I figured I was next and would take whoever finishes soonest. The 2nd barber finished; but didn't look at me. He casually went to the back first. Then he came back and swept. He said nothing to me. I thought maybe he would finish sweeping and say "sorry for the wait, come on up" or "ok man what can I do for you"....still nothing. He started checking his phone and took a call. About 12 awkward minutes later one of the barbers left and asked the one guy who was still working on a client if he had any other cuts today, and then he pointed at me. Ok thank goodness I was allowed to be in this place. Meanwhile 5:40PM passed. To spare you spending the amount of time I did; i'll just tell you it was 7:40PM by the time I got out of there. (this experienced definitely spread a little poo on my party because it meant my dinner was soggy by the time I was able to pick it up) The haircut was great, but it wasn't exactly what I asked for. I asked the man to thin out the beard a bit, and take next to nothing off the top, just kind of even it out (I should have specified no more than a cm). He took to much off the top and the beard. My beard is very upset with me, but it's hardly a beard anymore so it doesn't even have the energy to yell. Now, like a rookie, I failed to ask for price beforehand and just assumed it would be cheap because of yelp reviews...it wasn't. When we finished the man asked me for THIRTY dollars (that's at least five good burritos right there), and I paid him, plus a five dollar tip. A better tip might have been to remind him to acknowledge a customer when they walk in (even a "welcome to blues" with a middle finger would have been more than the silence I walked into). To be fair he cleaned up my beard which likely added to the price. The second rookie mistake (which really applies to any shop) is you never want to go in pushing closing time. The conversation was decent, and the cut was good, but I probably won't be back. Again these were good dudes that gave good cuts, but I won't be paying to come back and let any more sandwiches go soggy. happy haircuts to you my friends! read more

The worst haircut of my life. The singular level of unprofessionalism I experienced in this establishment prompts me to write my first Yelp review. I explained with photos the sort of cut I wanted. The barber, Elliott, asked no further questions as he performed the task, very slowly, and without ever bothering to show me the results of his work until -- yawn -- almost an hour had been spent on a routine trim that wouldn't normally take more than 15-20 minutes. Charitably enough, I attributed this combination of silence and "dedication" to professional confidence and diligence with detail, but little did I know. The result: the cowlick on the back of head is sticking up at a length that is about 1/4 of the hairs surrounding it. I have no doubt that Elliott noticed the damage he had done and therefore took his sweet time to tame the tuft of his creation by combing unheard amounts of water and gel onto my head. To be sure, he eventually arrived at a solution, but the solution is as permanent as my lacking desire for permanently wet hair. Yes, the tuft that is sticking up from my head as I'm writing this looks quite comical. If anyone wants to teach a child what a ruined haircut looks like, please get in touch. I may need to charge a fee for the demonstration, though, because I am hoping to regain the money I lost on this blunder. read more

Word of advice to these small businesses, if you want your company to attract ppl, have an attractive demeanor toward prospective customers. Aaron Reese is the go-to man. After a couple of weeks I begin to look like a crazy person. Reese always gets me back into proper form. The time that he takes, his attention to detail, and the care with which he does his job is a rare thing today. Is it the cheapest in town? Probably not. But I ask for a lot, and he delivers. I've been getting my hair cut from Nolan for about a year. I get a pompadour style cut. Every time I've gone to Nolan I've received compliments on my cut. He's a nice guy and an excellent barber. Went there for the first time today and was pleased with my cut. I walked in with no appointment, on a Wednesday morning, and was able to be seen next. I had to wait a little bit for Marvin to finish but not an unreasonable amount of time. What I appreciated most about Marvin's cut was him taking his time and making sure it actually looked right, not just getting me out of the chair for the next client, and the conversation was light, not too much, which personally annoys me. I'll definitely be back, since it's in the neighborhood, which was my point in trying a new place today. read more
