Walking into the shop, you'd really think you'd get a good shave. My fiancé came in with a face full of hair, and left with just some of it still there. He claims the experience was fun, and new, but he won't be coming back. He got a hair cut, and a facial shave. Hair cut was too short, facial wasn't complete. Walking out, he said he could get a cleaner shave with his own razor, and that he'll be going home to clean it up. Was not worth the $110.00. His hair cut was a little shorter than he wanted, however the cut itself is amazing. Very detailed and very well done. He is bleeding a little bit, and his face is a red. You shouldn't be this red, and he never has been this red after a shave before. My fiancé had to ask for after shave too, that's a little odd to us. The vibe of the shop is amazing, good music, and the barbers are dressed very nicely. I brought my son here for a haircut and they did a fairly good job. The only issue I had was that they tried to charge my son haircut as an adult and not a child. I got a refund but I had to ask, I don't think I should have to explain to them that my son is a child. My son's haircut was $38. Great barbershops are hard to come by, I lived in the loop for 3 years and tried nearly every barber here before finally finding Funks. This shop specializes in short haircuts, as other reviewers who are complaining about that should have figured given that it's a barbershop - this is the case for 90% of classic men's barbershops. Longer haired men (especially if worn down or in any special type of way) should go to a salon where the equipment, prices, and skill will better serve your needs. That's not to say they couldn't handle it here, but longer hair is not cut/styled for $50-$70 anywhere these days, so if you pay this place $60 and expect them to wash, condition, hair dry, and cut/style your 13+ inch hair you're going to be disappointed. One thing to get out of the way Medo is the Man! He has been my barber for over 2 years now and the guy is a pro. When I got a meeting, I have to get to he works hard to try and get me finished up quick so I'm not late, and times when I have nothing else going on I hang out, chat, and relax during my cut. I believe you can tell true skill in a barber by how often you end up liking each new haircut because with every new cut - you are comparing it to an increasing amount of previous haircuts you've gotten. After years of having my hair cut by Medo I'd say that he truly is skilled and is only getting better with time. Each cut I've gotten at Funks has been better than the last which is why I've been returning here for over 2 years. Price is solid. Quality is solid. Crew is cool. Dog is nice. I came in 2/12/25 and got my hair cut by Berto, when I came in I had hair in the front going past my nose. I said I want my hair to hang in front of my eyes and just trim it up a bit. I left with hair that won't even reach my eyebrow. can't speak for every barber there but Berto just did whatever he felt like and gave me a wildly different haircut than I asked for and possibly one of the worst I've ever gotten I look terrible. My 6 year old and I are vacationing in Chicago from California this week. Was supposed to get his hair cut before we left, but didn't make the time. Figured we could do it in Chicago. I yelped and this was the place that came up. Super cute barbershop! Definitely different from the barbershops we've gone to in our town. Came in around 2pm yesterday. While you can see the reviews here are all positive, I am still going to add mine to recognize my barber and just attest that this is a great barbershop to patron. I just moved back home to Chicago recently and my former hair stylist and the salon I went to is no longer in business in the area. I went to another salon that I will not name, and I left very unhappy since the stylist chose to run 15 min late for my appointment, lop my hair off recklessly, and then was expecting big tips for her company. Sadly, there's a lot of places like that for men's hair in the city and suburbs. Funk's is the real deal, though. These gentlemen know how to do men's haircuts, they do a great job, and the atmosphere is something familiar and nice. It's a chill, comfortable place for men to come. I got my haircut with Sam, and he truly did a great job. Everything about the service and experience is top notch, worth every penny (and the pricing I think is very fair). Funk's has a highly intuitive, convenient online scheduling system (it even tells you each Barber's next near-term availabilities) and you can even pre-pay before the visit. Bottom line: James B refused to fix up my hair after the initial cut which did not look like the picture I showed him. Haircut was so bad that I had to get it fixed 2 days later at Civic Opera House Barber Shop which is cheaper, has WAY more experienced barbers, provides better service, and was kind enough to not even charge me for fixing my botched haircut from James B at Funk's barber shop. My go-to barber "Philip Di Ciminna", an absolute legend, unfortunately closed down shop. I went to James B seeing his very positive reviews in my search for a new barber. I arrived 5 minutes early and ended up waiting for 30 minutes after my scheduled appointment time. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There was a misunderstanding (which I take full accountability for) over a taper vs fade on my hair...after the cut was finished, I wanted my sides to be shorter as my haircut did not look like the picture I showed him to emulate.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I apologized for my misunderstanding and asked that he'd fix it and give me a fade instead of a taper. He was NOT willing to spend a little more time on my hair and I walked out with one of the worst cuts I've received in years...after having waited 30 minutes past my scheduled appointment time. I disliked my haircut so much that I went somewhere else to fix it before I stepped foot into my office...it was that bad. I took my business to the Civic Opera House Barber as they seem to operate with more class (based on the reviews). Sam from the Civic Opera House Barber gave me a fade and fixed my haircut...and refused to let me pay him. That's real service. Also, Civic Opera House Barber charges $40 for haircuts vs Funk's $60-$70. For what it's worth, Mike, the 'operations manager' if I remember right, phoned me contritely, thanking me for the review to improve their operation, and refunded the service. He also offered the next service on them, but considering the newly-reminded vulnerable situation that a straight razor on a neck is, I'd have to be out of my mind. He understood. He was apparently out of town for the past couple weeks and couldn't return my message. Obviously I think someone else should have returned it for him. He called a sentence in my review "aggressive." I do not agree, but after I considered its speculative nature, I decided that the sentence was a digression and unfair in the sense that they couldn't be responsible for it, and so I removed it. What else can he do for me now? Nothing. The damage is done and he's done all he can at this point. I doubt they sell burn balm. read more

This is the closest barber shop to my apartment, $42 not including tip it's a bit pricier then my previous haircut but it is to be expected being downtown and the convenience of it all. Had an appointment scheduled with Rob at 4:30 - I arrived at 4:25 and was greeted by the host who let me know it would be 5 minutes or so until Rob was finished with his customer. No problem, happy to wait. 20 minutes pass and it still looks like Rob is in the middle of a haircut and I start wondering if this customer sat down just a minute or two before my scheduled appointment. I give it until 5 and decide to leave - I am not an impatient man however I found it disrespectful and ill-suited for a "one-of-a-kind" barbershop. I had an excellent haircut and shave here from Mike. Probably the best haircut and shave I've ever had in my life. If I'm ever rich, I'd come here every 3 days to get a straight razor shave. My skin is very sensitive, so I was a bit apprehensive before the shave, but I had nothing to fear. I'm not sure if was the three different shaving creams, the multiple hot towels, or just the skillful technique, but my skin felt awesome afterwards.
