The process of choosing, ordering and paying by app before receiving an order is problematic. This process reduces any meaningful contact with the serving staff and influences the patron to pay a tip before the level of what service there is rendered. In our case, only one of our coffees was delivered and the waitstaff had to be hunted down in order to report it to them. Even after being promised the problem would be addressed, it was only after one of the two staff members I spoke to happened to come to our table for a random service check that he had to be reminded. All of our meals were eventually delivered forty-five minutes after ordering (the long wait was made longer because two of our three meals were dropped when a server unfortunately fell). My wife and daughter lived their avocado toasts, but my breakfast burrito was lukewarm and lacking taste. Stuffing potatoes in the burrito only makes it drier and frankly boring when the same potatoes are served with the burrito anyway. We rarely complain in restaurants, especially to the point of asking for compensation, but this time we did, and the manager was extremely responsive and apologetic, refunding us for the entire meal. This is a case where the process, not so much the staff is at fault. Relying on technology a bit too much for efficiency, not only has a detrimental effect on the amount and quality of service received, but arrogantly asks for a tip first. read more

I've been here a few times and would have given 4 stars for the quality of the coffee in my past visits. But today I just gave up. Arrived and waited for a few minutes for the person ahead of me to pay. When she was done, the barista went over to move dishes around with another employee. Neither made eye contact with me or said they would be right with me. It didn't seem like they were making the other person's drinks either (one of them may have been pulling espresso shots, but I couldn't see if they were). After waiting longer and with a line of people behind me, I finally gave up and went across the street to another cafe. The quality of coffee here is good, but definitely go there expecting to wait around. read more

Passed by this spot in Harvard Square and decided to give it a shot. The layout is beautiful - and they have a big menu but the prices are outrageous. I got their collective granola the other day which was over $10.00 for a simple yogurt cup that included granola, 3 blueberries and some lemon curd; all of which took 15+ minutes to prepare. The coffee is good, but there are plenty of other options in the area. It feels like a tourist trap, and a disappointment for locals. read more

Can't stand the concept. An elder friend and I came in yesterday for a cool drink and a snack. When we were seated, we were told to use our phones to order- difficult for some elders. Our nice server gave us menus. I asked if they had lemonade which I couldn't find on the menu. Our server said we have this drink with lemonade and that drink with some lemonade, but not just lemonade. She offered to bring me some for the price of a water- whatever that means- but it was nice effort on her part. Then she told us to pay to put the order in. I hate this idea. Why should I have to pay-and tip!- before I even see the food and evaluate the service? I get it if ordering take out, but it's not ok to demand payment upfront when I'm sitting in the restaurant. The food (a salad) was okay but overpriced. This place seems geared only toward young people who never put down their phones and is not a comfortable cafe for most others who want to enjoy their food, linger and have conversation. We later waited in a line to use the one functioning bathroom before we left. It was horrendous, filthy like it hadn't been cleaned in a week! I was afraid a rat would pop out. I will never go there again. I really miss the wonderful independent cafes Harvard Square used to have. Corporatization and chains have ruined HS. read more

Do you like carelessness with a smile? This place is for you. Upon entering I was asked to oder via the app, even though I was able to use my card just last week. I looked over that, but as soon as the barista told me to order online he proceeded to take down his mask and touch his face behind the bar. He didn't even pull up his mask to make the drink but instead handed me a drink with his unwashed hands and a smile. The whole point of ordering online is to prevent the spread of COVID, but I couldn't even drink the beverage that was ordered due to the germs he spread all over the cup. 100% will not be coming back. read more

Mediocre food at a high price. They have a good menu, but the taste just isn't there. Spending a little over $13 on a slide of bread with avocado, feta cheese, and three grape tomatoes is not ideal, especially when it wasn't even that tasty. There are definitely better places to go -- especially to beat the price of what you get. read more

This place makes great sandwiches, you will not be disappointed. However, you might want to order ahead as they can take 20+ minutes to make a sandwich. The counter workers are very busy making coffee and they don't seem as worried about the food orders. Its not their fault the kitchen is slow, and their food may be completely cooked to order, because its delicious. They are not always proactive about calling out to let people know their to go bag is sitting behind the counter. Never mind the hot sandwich is getting cold, they are a little too busy trying to keep up with the coffee orders. If you hover around the counter, they seem to wonder why your getting impatient after waiting 25 minutes for your sandwich. Most recently I pre ordered my sandwich and waited 20 minutes because coffee guy was confused about the name on the bag. After 20 minutes of waiting he figured it out and I was on my way. So if you have time to sit and enjoy your coffee the food will be good. If you're in a hurry pre order for pickup. read more

Not a fan. I was excited to try it out initially because of all the hype. However, I found the hosted seating to be a little much in the amount of space they have. Super cramped. Probably would have just been better to keep it cafe style instead of switching over to restaurant style. What if you only want drinks? Felt like that would be frowned upon if you were going to take a seat.... It gets crowded by the door with the coffee supplies being right there also. Food was fine, but overpriced for the quality. Coffee was average. I prefer Flour, LA Burdick, or Blue Bottle if I'm going to Harvard square. I won't be returning. I miss Crema. read more

This was the worst experience I've ever had at a coffee shop/restaurant in Harvard Square in my three years of living here. I visited for the first time yesterday. When I walked in five minutes early to a meeting with a friend, I saw a sign that said, "Please wait to be seated." I was surprised that a coffee shop wouldn't have readily available seating. I asked the woman at the register if I could be seated at a table for two since there was no host to greet customers. She said I needed to wait until they cleared a space. I could see multiple empty tables from the front where I was standing and a completely empty balcony. I asked if I could sit up there but was told it was closed. Five minutes later, I was still not seated and by now all of the tables on the front half of the restaurant were clear. It wasn't a peak time (2pm) so the place was pretty empty. When my friend walked in, I told her that I already disliked this place because they hadn't seated me in five minutes and the place was nearly empty. A different woman who was now standing at the register overheard me and defensively told us that they were short staffed in response to my comment that it was silly that the balcony was closed. However, I had seen at least five workers standing around chatting. Two workers were even taking photos of each other smiling in front of giant 12 foot tall boxes. The woman finally told us we could sit wherever we wanted on the main floor. We went over and sat down and a few minutes later a waiter came over to take our order. I asked for a vanilla latte and he informed me that they didn't have any syrups for lattes; they just had the three lattes they offered on the menu. I settled for a golden latte- tumeric and cinnamon. It was so bad that I didn't drink more than a sip of it. My friend- who is allergic to almond milk- asked for a substitution, which they charged her an extra dollar for but didn't tell her about until the bill came. My drink alone was over $5. I wanted to ask for a different drink but the waiter never came back. I eventually was able to flag our waiter down after 20 minutes when he finally walked by again to ask for the bill. My friend was shocked to find her drink costing almost $7 for what looked no bigger than 6oz drink. I understand charging more for an experience but for anyone who is wondering, it is not worth it by a long shot. I had high hopes for the Crema replacement, but my expectations and minimum standard for a coffee shop in a college town were not even within the neighborhood of being met. I hope my friends don't have to experience this and I'll make sure to spread the word that this place is not worth a visit. read more

Be aware It is a restaurant not a coffee shop like Crema, Tatte, Flour. You can only have a coffee to go. I was told that technically ( exact words) I couldn't sit if I didn't order food . But because it was empty at opening hours 7 am they will give me a chance to sit. read more

Overpriced and understaffed. The ingredients seemed fresh but I was underwhelmed by my rainbow bowl. I went with some friends on a very busy Sunday. The employees were obviously overwhelmed and less than friendly as a result. Some items were omitted from our orders and when we requested the missing items, we were treated with total disdain. I don't blame the employees for this, I'm not sure I would have acted any differently in their position. Hopefully management can better support their employees by adequately staffing in the future. Even with better service and lower prices, I'm not sure I'd come here again. read more

Have visited bluestone in a number of locations in New York, especially on the upper West side. Food and coffee there usually great but the service at this NY location leaves much to be desired. So, we thought we would try bluestone on Brattle Street. It was FABULOUS...they've only been open two weeks and the service was superb, the food delicious and the flat white...well...exactly what a flat white should be. Pity they aren't doing their chai latte at this location...my wife super disappointed about this. Would recommend to others and we will definitely be back. Overpriced for Terrible service. I was done eating by the time my husbands meal come out because they forgot to put it in. But they failed to acknowledge us during this time or apologize for the mistake. Coffee was good though. Very disappointing. No reason to go back. The menu looked very unique but both of our meals were overcooked. The salmon was very dry and the tandoori chicken had nothing tandoori about it, and was also overcooked. It's much more expensive than other better quality restaurants in Harvard Square. The inside of the cafe looks nice and they do have indoor seating but we chose to sit outside because it was a sunny day. The final straw of the bad experience was when we went to use the bathroom, we were refused because "they have no public restrooms" - despite our buying 2 meals and tipping 20% for them to carry a bag outside). Even on a busy Saturday afternoon, I was greeted by friendly staff and great service. Stephen and Alexis were working when I visited - they are both outstanding! My typical coffee order is something with more sugar than coffee, such as a caramel macchiato. I was initially disappointed that Bluestone offers few flavor additions, but was pleasantly surprised with the chai latte I opted for instead. Wonderful experience and would definitely return. It reminds me of LPQ with the option to either get a drink and food to go, or you can sit and dine in. The menu is on the smaller side, but lots of options for vegans/vegetarian/dairy free/gluten free/paleo eaters. The inside is minimalist but cozy with accents of wood and plants. Bluestone Lane at Harvard Square has become my go-to place for getting work done and meeting with friends for coffee during the pandemic. Having frequented the Bluestone Lanes around New York City when I lived there, I was thrilled to find that Harvard Square had a location since moving to this area, and my experiences with the staff service and order quality has been stellar each and every week. The coffee is well made, the food is served with care, and the seating is spacious, not to mention the staff even curates some great music in the background -- at some point, they had their own Spotify playlist going! When I make table reservations with Resy, I usually include a request to be seated near an outlet if possible, and the staff has made it happen nearly every time I have requested it. When I order online with Grubhub, I find delivery to be super quick and the order is always correct. When I am nearby and walk up to the location without a table reservation, more often than not, the staff is able to seat me at a table, and when they aren't able to, they are courteous. If you are looking for a place where the staff work hard, care about what they do, and make an effort to get to know you, take a trip to Bluestone Lane at Harvard Square. I'm familiar with Bluestone Lane having lived in NYC, and this is one of the locations that's less cafe and more restaurant, with table service and the expectation of tipping. Like all locations, the food is very expensive (with somewhat small portions), but delicious as usual. A breakfast burrito and a latte with tip and tax cost me about $24 -- again, I knew what I was getting into, but it is quite a change from Crema. Though both food and coffee were very good, I'll likely only be back for special occasions. read more
