I've had some really unexpectedly good nights here, and I do feel that it's underrated. It's just never the first place to cross my mind when I'm out on the town, but whenever I end up here I'm guaranteed to enjoy myself. Their drinks are cheap, their food is delicious yet simple, and the staff is friendly and easygoing. I have to remember to stay away from the gaming room after a few drinks though, as my pocket change is bound to end up in that stupid room! The outdoor beer garden is huge and there's ample seating for everyone. It's a pretty good for smokers in the winter, as the cover provides protection from the elements. Check this place out, as I'm sure you'll too discover that it's a pretty decent pub if you just give it the chance.

When I went to there on a Saturday afternoon, I was lucky enough to experience their outdoor seating in the beer garden. The beer garden is located at the northern edge of the hotel/pub. There are many large trees to take shade under and a range of barrels to sit at and enjoy a drink. For the beer garden, they had a window in the main building where you could order drinks. The drinks were well priced. One thing that I found pretty cool was that there was a person collecting beer glasses from tables once people were done. He even wore a shirt that said "glassy" on it. What was even more impressive than the humour with the shirt was the fact that he could carry around 40 glasses stacked up and still open the door to go inside. Some serious talent there! Although I did not end up selecting from their exquisite snack and meal menu for the beer garden, as the event I went to was catered, I managed to have a quick browse of the menu. The meals were around $20 or so, which is pretty good and they all sounded great. I will have to try some of them, the next time I go. As for the food at the catered event, I felt it was quite innovative, favoursome and well presented. The first item I had were sundried tomato and thyme pinwheels. It was a simple bite sized appetizer however the thyme and the sundried tomato paste went well together. The flatbread that held the ingredients together was also not too loose meaning that it could easily be eaten without a plate or napkin. The second appetizer was a Brie and Quince cracker. The watercracker had a thin slice of Brie at the base followed by a small rectangular prism of quince paste. It was a very simple yet effective appetizer. It is a shame I didn't get a photo of that one before I sent it on a one-way journey to my stomach. Appetizer the third was a samosa. It was filled with diced vegetables and was served hot. For this one, I thought ahead and grabbed a napkin and waited a minute for them to cool down. The same could not be said for the other people at the table who endured went straight in and found it to be quite hot indeed. The samosa was served with what appeared to be a chive sauce. The sauce was tasty and complemented the flavor of the samosa and it's spiced vegetable contents quite well. The fourth appetizer was a prawn wrapped in a fancy tempura batter. I am not a big seafood lover however I broke of the tip of the batter and found it to be quite nice. Appetizer number 5 were sausage rolls and mini pasties. And the best part was, they looked like they were made at the hotel and not bought from a supermarket! The worst part was, they ran out by the time they got to me cause most people took two of them (a pastie and a sausage roll each). The sixth and final appetizer was a thin strip of crumbed fish served with tartare sauce. I had a nice sized piece which unfortunately broke when I dipped it in the tartare sauce, however I was fortunately able to savage it. The batter was nice and not too oily. It was well crumbed and the fish was fresh. If these appetizers are anything like the food on the menu, then I will definitely be going back. The surroundings were lovely and it was the perfect spot to spend the afternoon.

My husband had the steak special which he said was nice. My mum has the eggplant which again she said was nice but too small. For dessert we had brûlée and the brownie special. Again both so sweet! All in all, a truly wonderful and happy night! Free champagne, drinks at the bar, drunken breakdancing, stripteasing, and MC Tin Tin AKA Timbaland ripping the mic up for some original karaoke at the end of the night!! So hilarious, I had to join in, too! Not only that, but getting to talk with some Adelaide's finest athletes. This party is the bomb. Definitely my favorite engagement party so far...oooh yea!...What makes it even more special is that it was my best friend J-Bob's engagement party. Boy, time goes so fast. It seems like only yesterday when we were running around playing soccer as little kids. Even the bartenders were cool, and chatted to us when everyone finished drinking, when they were finally closing the bar around midnight. It just wouldn't feel right if I said I needed more. Spending a great night with some of the coolest people in Adelaide, together in a cool place like the Hackney Hotel. As I've mentioned before, it's not where you are that matters, it's who you know and who you're with that makes the night! And J-Bob's speech?! Memorable. (It's going to go down in history as one of my favourite best friend speeches ever). Just make sure you organise a ride home, as a lot of your friends would have been drinking all night.

Okay, it is a little bit of a hike to get there, having to cross the parklands, and a major road, to get there. Both times I have been here I ended up grabbing the schnitzel (which is one of my favorite meals) and it really wasn't all that bad. However, all it really is is your standard suburban pub with a sports bar, a dining area, bottle shop, and gaming room. The porch out the front does have some nice views of the parklands, but it isn't really a place I'm going to rush out and visit in a rush.

The barramundi was delicious, but certainly not enough for 2 people! One person could have eaten the whole lot easily. We certainly didn't get value for our $70.

You can sit at formally set dining tables (wine glasses and all) or with in the bistro (which is just as pleasant). The atmosphere is lovely and well decorated. The menu has enough schmancy words on it to make it sound like the meals are going to be gour-met enough so that they can justify asking for $25 for a salmon main in a pub. The mains aren't bad. Food is above average pub fare and they even fry their mash potato into balls. Only complaint? Not enough salad/chips for the price of the mains that you are paying for. After all, we aren't in the Queen's dining hall... I had a very well cooked Atlantic Salmon dish on a bed of beetroot risotto (that my friends delightfully described to look like "kittens insides" before I ate it). But unfortunately that was it. Aside from a few bits of fennel and orange it was basically fish and rice. Would have loved a heavier garnish to make the most of the dish. Not sure what the bar is like in this place but when we went to check it out at 11pm on a Saturday night after a show at the Thebbie it was closed! Then again I probably shouldn't be all that surprised considering that not only is it Glenelg, it is the type of place that really only the locals know about, and considering the locals, then this is going to be one of those pubs that I really do like. Well, I wasn't wrong at all, they have an awesome beer garden, with a stage, and a great selection of beers as well. Definitely one to check out.
