Another hit! BMV stores are some of the my favorite stores, period. Not simply book stores, but stores. This one in particular is a favorite spot of mine because it's where I finally found Season 8 of Seinfeld on DVD, before it was on Netflix. I was about to resign myself to having to buy the entire set of all the seasons to get this when I found this. Hallelujah. Staff as usual are always helpful, they have a huge wall of Blu Rays and DVD's and it has that feel of a cozy, classic bookstore. One of the other things I enjoy about this is it's proximity to the Indigo, which is directly across the street. I like supporting both, but sometimes BMV won't have exactly what you want and you just want to get it without having to look around at 6 different stores. The Bloor BMV is close'ish to the Indigo at Varsity, but not that close. The one on Edward is close to Eaton, but this is most direct. Anyhow, this particular location may be my favorite as far as layout and it always seems to have those hard to find selections. Always go to BMV. NOW! ;) read more

So helpful, and the books are in such good condition for a reasonably low price Love the cute totes as well, for Queen, Yonge etc featuring streetcars and trains. I could have spent the whole day wandering around looking at books. I love this shop! There is nothing like browsing through paper. This location is the best! Stop letting an Amazon algorithm tell you who to be- browse this store, talk to the owner (a sweetheart) and walk away with narratives that are vehicles for change and betterment! I bought 5 books at amazing prices and the store owner rounded it all down to $35 after taxes, netting me additional savings. Can't beat that! I was able to find several books on my school reading lists as well, more than I could even afford to buy in one haul. SO don't assume it's a random draw. The place is organized, efficient, and you get to enjoy the prices of what the publishing market calls "remainders" I basically had to be dragged out of this place. Pledged allegiance and offered my servitude but to my dismay, the owner doesn't need a reader in residence. Humbug! Truly, this store is one of a kind and a dying breed. I feel bad for those people who are going into the Indigo across the street. If they just took the time to survey the neighborhood, they would (like me) discover the little used book store that is the BMV. They have small-shop rules like "no cellphone conversations" since it's such a small space, and will put a sign on the door to let you know if their debit machine is down (no worries if it is - all of the major banks are a hop-skip-jump away from this location). They even let me snap a few engagement photos inside the store! For a gal that needs a book in her purse to survive the TTC, this is my recommended place for books. read more

Full marks for BMV. One point of contention: You guys could afford to lose the angry stack of turds behind the purchasing desk. You know who I mean. Quite possibly he was having a bad day. But that doesn't excuse the belligerent and disdainful attitude spitting from his mouth. Specifically, as I was unloading boxes -- and before I had a chance to say hello -- the pile snarled: "You better put those back in your car. Don't come in here and waste my time with this garbage". I left without comment. It's true: Probably nobody wants 50-year-old accounting reference guides, but I had several boxes, some of which contained decent titles. Of course, how would you know that if you denied all boxes based on the first? And even if I had arrived with a crate of horseshit, I would expect a more civilized reception. It's simple: Just be polite. read more

I don't buy books often, but when I do, I get them at BMV! This place is cozy and when you walk in, it seems like a store you'd find in Diagon Alley of the world of Harry Potter. There are great finds with great prices, please don't waste your money paying for more at Indigo across the street. BMV also buys used books, depending on what they consider resell-able. A woman walked in with a box of books, and was paid $45.00. Definitely a fan! read more

This used book store has a great selection of books, DVD movies and comics. Staff at this location are not so helpful or friendly unless you happen to get the owner (who's awesome & friendly) but if you search for what you're looking for, you will probably find it. There is always a dollar table out front where if you have time to search, can always find someting worth reading. My latest gem from the outside table was "The Forest Lover", a tale of the life of Emily Carr. read more

Been coming here for what seems like a thousand years...at least since they opened. Always got a good selection at great reduced prices. A knowledgeable staff that not only know their stock but can also offer you helpful leads so you can track down that rare gem your looking for. When I'm in the area i always make it a point to stop in and rarely walk out empty handed. read more

I used to think BMV was a typical second hand bookstore.. You know what i'm talking about, you walk in and there's a weird earthy smell to the place. I'm not a fan of those places, if I wanted to read a coffee (and whatever else) stained book, I'd go to the Toronto Library. But BMV is not like that at all, it's a pretty neat bookstore and the books are in pretty decent shape (for some it's really hard to tell if they are even used)! It's a two storey joint, but i think the majority of the books are on the main floor. The second floor I believe are for comic books and such. It's a bit squished in there, that's about as critical as I can get. If you're looking for a book in particular you might have a hard time finding it, especially if it isn't a popular title, but you just have to keep an open mind when you're there. read more

BMV Books is my first stop for TV DVDs. Right behind the cash counter they have all their fancy TV DVDs double stacked 3 shelves high, in alphabetical order, and at super fancy low prices. They also have Blu-Ray discs if you're into that madness (Lost on Blu-Ray, btw, is the most fantastical thing you'll ever see). They also have books there, if you're into the whole reading thing. Their design book section has never impressed me, but every once in a while you can find a gem. And upstairs they have those fancy picture books the kids like to call comics. read more

BMV is absolutely a gem. I've been to all 3 of their locations, but I go to this one most often because it's close to where I live. The selection is fantastic, and they have both used books and remaindered books that are brand new but at a significant discount below the cover price (plus DVDs and more). You can often buy brand new books that were published only a year or two ago at 50-75% less than the original price! I could easily spend a couple of hours browsing the shelves. The staff are not at all in-your-face (they usually hang out behind the counter), but they're very helpful if you have a question. read more

Very great place and good books they have - very very cheap. I bought so many great cook books just for $5 and $6 but there are also books just for a dollar. And I mean good books, I didnt buy them, because I already have them, bought for $15 and more in Indigo but if I would have known about this place earlier... I also got series dvd for $9... very happy... I saw some Sidney Sheldon books I love there - only for $2.99 but they were little too dirty... so I didnt buy them, still have to order from amazon. read more

I'm always surprised at the selection BMV manages to pack into their two small floors at Yonge & Eglinton. Their literature and science fiction selections are excellent, and the mystery-thriller section is very good as well. I like the separate CanLit section, which is always well-stocked. The romance section is skimpy, but I've occasionally picked up a find in their poetry & drama sections. Paperbacks run from $2 to about $6, and trade paperbacks probably run up to $10 or $12, depending. They also have sizable new age, occult, and religion sections, though I imagine what is shelved where must cause debate. My Wiccan husband was amused to see a respected book on Wicca shelved next to a UFO book. Maybe the UFO-fanciers would be miffed too, who knows. I like to glance at their graphic novel section upstairs; like other BMVs, they seem to nurture those shelves as best they can. This location also has many singles, though I don't generally pay much attention to those. I should also mention their large used DVD selection, which is well-priced. This is where you should come to replace those last few VHS tapes in your collection, or pick up a favourite movie from a year or two ago. They also have a good selection of boxed TV series over the cash, and they will occasionally cut you a deal. The tables are stuffed with publisher's overstock at good prices - similar to the tables at Book City. The only thing I get frustrated by is their cavalier approach to alphabetisation. I spend a lot of time scanning the Ms, hoping to turn up an author. read more

Oh I love coming to BMV Books. There is always a list of books that I am looking for and then end up finding something completely different, but still of interest! Staff here are very helpful and the selection is always changing. If you are interested in selling books, DVDs and even comics books, this is a great place to do so. One thing I would recommend would be to do it as soon as possible, as opposed to waiting until you have a ton of books to sell. I heard one of the employees say that's you'd get more money because it's easier to sell when they are popular. I absolutely love the "BMV" bookstore chain. You can always find great titles that you have always wanted to read at less then half the cover price. This specific location is a bit crowded inside and can be a bit tedious to move about in, especially when it's busy. I also find it a bit harder to find the books I'm looking for in this location because of the set up. However the owner is a super nice guy and makes up for the inconvenience of the set up. :0) On more then one occasion he has given me great deals. I love that you can get books that are like new for real cheep, but also that he will buy your old books off of you so you can purchase new books to read. read more

I find that this location of BMV is a little different than the other two downtown stores; it seems to have a few niche specialty areas. Like the others, it has a lot of new publisher's overstock material on tables on the ground floor, then has used literature and recent fiction shelved along the main wall with used DVDs at the front. The used literature section has a lot more hardcover and older volumes however, with not as many duplicates, and relatively few small paperbacks (but there are always lots of new reprinted paperbacks on the overstock tables). There is also a pretty decent section of religion and philosophy along the smaller wall. There is also a 2nd floor the same size as downstairs, and it has fairly large sections of a few non-fiction topics, as well as a large children's section near the front. At the back near the stairs, there is a lot of older science fiction, along with graphic novels and specialty items like Star Wars collector books and Dr Who novelties. Along one wall, there is a fairly extensive section for history and warfare, including a few shelves with Toronto and local history books. There are also sections for science and business and entertainment that have pretty good selections for their size. Pricing is pretty much the same as the other locations, $4-10 for much of the usual stock. The literature section tends to be a bit more expensive due to its higher quality, and the specialty items can be more expensive but still reasonable. Overall, this is a good location to check out generally, and especially if you're looking for something in one of its niches. read more

Fantastic used book store. I have so many books but I can never just walk by this place. Love the vibe, the smell of books, the search for a hidden treasure. Great place to spend an hour. Stopped in here to grab some reading material and fell in love with the place. The staff were fun and intelligent and quite helpful, and the incredible range of books just floored me. They pack a lot into this small space, and I especially loved the prices. Left with some Toscano and some Aristotle, hard cover, and didn't spend a lot. Very happy! read more

Its cozy and very small. Hope you don't mind being bumped. Be polite and follow the only two rules the store has, don't sit on the stairs and do not use a cell phone. Lots to choose from. Sections labelled clearly and sorta well organized. I have a difficult time finding some books and have to ask sometimes. (if only they had a data base it would be perfect) Books are cheap and well priced. Never bought DVDS from there, but they are not badly priced either. I have had a few bad encounters with one of their staff members (Hes a cranky fella) but other then that its great. Most staff are friendly, maybe the guy was having some bad days. read more

Agree with a previous reviewer below that the guy in charge of purchasing is rude and gave me a lot of attitude. I called with a list of titles I wanted to sell to see if they're interested in anything, and he was very impatient and rude. Basically when there was a book he didn't want to buy, he would give you attitude about it and make you feel embarrassed for trying to sell it. Why don't you simply say that you're not going to take it? In the end he basically told me I called at a bad time on a weekend and he was busy and I shouldn't bother calling back. This happened about a year ago and every time I pass by the store I remember it. I live very close to the store but I would not go back as a customer due to this experience. read more

Whenever I can, I like to support local independent shops as opposed to very large retailers. BMV's prices are very reasonable and their selection is pretty good. The only thing standing in the way of a higher rating is unfortunately one of their main buyers at this location is a jerk. read more

Excellent book store. It's perfect for when you are in a book slump and just can't find a book that interests you, you can pick up a wide variety for a buck or two on the racks outside. The books inside the store are less than half the price of chapters across the street. this is one of my most favorites places! i love reading and i love books. i've been to BMV countless number of times, and have browsed through their collection of books for hours (ok not hours but definitely an hour on more than one occasion!) they offer the best deals and discount prices by far. i usually browse books at indigo, make a note of them then head to BMV - lo and behold, 8 times out of 10 they usually always have the book i'm looking for less $. i've been on shopping sprees in there! i've purchased used books from little as $1 to $4.99 and new books and bestsellers from $7.99 to $10. this place is a must checkout before buying books at indigo! read more

BMV is one of the best parts of living at Yonge and Eglinton. The staff members have been nothing but friendly to me and I appreciate their "no-cellphone" policy and late opening hours. The dollar bin books outside are always worth looking through, as are the comics on the second floor. They have DVDs, some board games and calendars, but mostly they are a book store, Not a gift shop, like Indigo across the street. read more

A very good used bookstore with a strong selection of science-fiction and comic books. For other topics, one should not expect too much, they have limited space and don't always make it easy to get at the stacks. One of my favorite place for books other than than the library. Its cheap and well organized so I can just pop in and check if they have what I'm looking for at the time. They don't have everything but when they do its definitely worth it considering prices are about half of indigo across the street. Also great selection of kids books upstair. read more

Not the largest selection, but what they do have is fairly organized (much more organized than most of the used books stores I've been to). I found many classics for 2-5 dollars, and that's cheaper than what I've found the same used books for online. They're not just a used bookstore, also having a lot of uber-discounted new books as well. Overall, you probably won't find cheaper books elsewhere, and so far its my favorite used bookstore in Toronto. read more
