Riding along the shore Folsom lake

What an amazing experience! Couldn't have asked for better weather or a better guide. Mariana (I hope I got her name right and apologize if I didn't) was an awesome guide. She knew all the horses personally and could read them like a book. She also took pictures of us along the way and air dropped them to us at the end of our trip which was a huge plus. The place was easy to find, plenty of parking, and the instructions for riding you receive ahead of time (as long as you follow them) are perfect. I do recommend a hat or sunscreen. The trail ride is beautiful, the lake even more so. This experience was an anniversary gift to my wife because she loves horses and grew up with them and this was the perfect gift. I rode on Hercules and my wife on Rango, the cute inseparable duo. Hercules had me laughing throughout the ride and definitely has a mind of his own and a stomach as much as I tried to keep him from snacking along the way. I highly recommend the trail ride, we had a blast and will definitely be doing it again in the future. Cheers!

My sister and I had a great experience. We were able to explore around while we waited. The horses were super sweet. Everyone there was nice and informative. Made us feel comfortable. Rode the goodess and biggest boy Hercules. Thank you Mel for the wonderful tour.

Boarding on the Lake, Best Place Ever! Great People, reasonable prices, great access to trails!

My daughter and I had a great trail ride with Marina. We felt very comfortable and safe on our sweet horses, Cola and Molly. The views around the lake were spectacular and 2 hours was the perfect amount of time. Marina was very friendly and knowledgeable and was happy to answer questions. She also took a lot of pics and short videos of us on her phone and then air dropped them to us. So nice to just put the phone away and enjoy the scenery.

Marina was a great tour guide! My husband and I are beginners but we had no problem with Hercules and Rango. Definitely would do again!

We went on amazing trial ride with Abe or maybe his name was Gabe. Idk. But the ride was beautiful. The horses were dialed in. So fun and relaxing. I love getting to get in the water with horses and trot a little. And Abe was fun and interactive.

Best trail ride around! Nothing beats riding through the trees and down to beautiful Folsom Lake! And it is 2 hours! Most places only offer an hour. My son who is an experienced equestrian loves this ride ( has been on it quite a few times) and this time we took a friend that had never been on a horse in his life and he loved it! I recommend this ride highly for anyone as the horse are gentle and the guides are amazing.

I want to start by saying our guide Marina was kind but it seems she could use more training because she seemed fearful, please consider natural horsemanship. We went on a ride with Marina today, and at one point after walking by the water, one of the horses named Hercules decided to roll. My fiancé got off and Marina grabbed the horse and pulled very hard on the reins and whipped him dramatically. Witnessing this was traumatizing and in my opinion completely unnecessary and tainted the experience. Rolling is a natural horse behavior and is an indication that the horse may be uncomfortable. Marina's horse appeared to have whip marks, indicating this is normal behavior. All the horses on the ride were very well behaved but she had told me at the start that my horse, Rango, would be difficult but I had no issue. However she still felt it necessary to tell me about a negative experience she had with Rango, saying at one point he bit her hard and she sustained an injury, which made me question why strangers were allowed to ride him? Rango has welts on either side of his neck, which after 10 years of experience with horses I have never seen before. It doesn't seem like they prioritize safety for horses or riders. The horses seemed skinny and dirty, and the barn looked like it needed more help with upkeep.. I also don't understand why they ask for a tip when the ride is already $100 each, it should be included, and after experiencing that we definitely were not going to tip. I would not recommend this and I will not be doing it again. In these photos you can clearly see Rango's injuries, pictured on both sides of his neck, and from looking at past reviews he's lived with this for a while. please use our money to do better for these horses!

AMAZING! Marina was our guide & she was so wonderful, she was very knowledgeable & patient with the beginner riders. It didn't even feel like 2 hours because it was so beautiful & peaceful. I had Buck & my husband had Rango. Great horses. We will definitely be doing this again! I'm thinking about taking lessons. Thank you!

04.23.2022 Fabulous day riding today. Great time with guide Marina. Met some nice people, rode my favorite horse Cola, saw some cool stuff, lots of photos, water level up. Marina, thanks for making today a great day, taking all the photos and handling a difficult situation with "3" in such a positive manner. I look forward to riding with you again.

Marina was great! I love to trail ride and Marina is so wonderful and with all levels. She has extraordinary patience and explains many things as you ride, including your horse's personality and how to best handle the horse you are riding. She focuses on the safety of you and your horse. The trails are very interesting with amazing views of Folsom Lake. I highly recommend Boarding at the Lake.

Riding in the beach, w the guide leading the way.

This place was really fun - the guide was really nice, and the ride was long enough to see lots of things. The only potential improvements I noted were... 1. Actually finding the place (Google Maps wasn't sure, and sent me on a journey to the other side of the lake), and when I finally arrived in the right spot, there wasn't anything assuring me of that fact. I was just kind of standing there hoping someone would help. 2. When you're done w the ride, there wasn't a place to wash your hands. The guide said we could wander around when we're done, but a sink or some kind of hose to rinse your hands would have been nice so I wouldn't have to wipe my hands on my jeans before getting back in the car. Overall it's a great deal, and once I figured out what was going on, it was really fun. But for a newbie, it started out kind of intimidating w no clear direction when I first got there. 4/5 tho, and would def recommend to a friend!

Great guide and overall an amazing experience. I would definitely recommend if you like the outdoors and the amazing views, and ofc animals!! The horse I rode was named 3, super sweet and calm.

No I’m sorry we don’t take two people on one horse. Six is too you t to ride alone.

My husband is 6'2" and weighs 290. Will he qualify to ride one of your horses?

No unfortunately. We have a weight limit of 250lbs. Sorry

Am I able to walk the trail while my daughters ride the horses? Or do we all have to ride on the horses?

You would have to ride. It’s a long walk, about five miles and we go up some hard hills. We just can’t interrupt our ride by waiting. Sorry.

How much is a horse rental per hour and can we rent horses for one hour?

We only offer a two hour guided ride. Riders have to be 10 and older, unless they have had five or more lessons then they can be as young as 8. Riders have to be under 200lbs if below 5ft 8 inches tall, below 250lbs if taller and have no… Read more

So my husband (age 57) and I (age 58) got started with Amber at Cornerstone Training at Royal Oak Farms in Granite Bay. During our weekly lessons Amber taught us everything about horses; how to groom, how to saddle, how to mount & dismount, how to post a trot, and how to canter. She went at exactly the right pace of learning for us. Amber introduced us to new goals each week, including intro to dressage and trotting over low barriers. I tried to be patient because the owners are very nice, but at the end of the day I wasted a lot of money and wasted a year of lessons for my daughter. I paid for an hour lesson and sometimes my daughter would be on a horse for 20 minutes!!! when I called the owner on it, she told me it wasn't quantity but quality that mattered. I happened to disagree, if I am paying for an hour lesson, I expect my child to be on a horse for an hour. She also got very little guidance in grooming and tacking, had to do it mostly on her own, which didn't help with her confidence in the process. Finally, they have very few riding horses and kept her on their Welsh pony Molly for a year. Now that she is at a professional riding facility, she is very unprepared to ride a real horse and has to start as a beginner due to her lack of confidence. I have also found myself alone, with no adult nor responsible person on the facility and two children waiting for a lesson. The owners are very laid back and do not seem to get involved with their students personally, they are more interested in their own performances but happy to send you an invoice that they may not be able to honor. I do not recommend this facility, it was a waste of time and money for our family.

Go elsewhere!…read more Hillside facilities are very run down and have a lot of deferred maintenance, but my daughter started riding here because I liked the owner Kathy Pead. Unfortunately, as time went on, it was apparent that her lesson instructor Destiny, who is only 18 years old, needed some additional teaching experience and mentorship. She is quite young and doesn't have the best judgement yet (however, in Destiny's defense, it seems like she has a lot of responsibility at the barn and is doing the best she can). Sadly, my 12 year old daughter was put on a horse named Daishar who was too advanced for her skillset and he BOLTED off during a lesson. My daughter was screaming and crying as she had no control over the horse, but eventually was able to roll off him when he slowed down. Thankfully, she did not sustain any injuries. This scary incident could have been prevented as she asked Destiny to get off the horse before leaving the arena, and also asked Destiny to grab the reigns to help guide her out as she sensed Daishar's energy changing and told her she was scared. Destiny did not take these requests seriously and told her no. I'm also horrified that Destiny had her get back ON the horse after this happened (despite my telling her I didn't think that was a good idea). After this situation, I thought it was important to discuss the situation with Kathy and confirm she had insurance coverage. I requested a declarations page to show the policy is paid up and active as I understand she is on MediCal and insurance is expensive. She said I am the first customer in 50 years to ever request this and told us we are not welcome for lessons anymore. If she had the coverage, don't you think she would've just showed it to me? In hindsight, this was a blessing in disguise as I am looking forward to finding a barn that takes my child's safety more seriously. Be careful if you decide to take lessons here.
