I was in the market to try on a Grand Seiko spring drive watch, and a billboard I saw in my area led me to the Boccardos in Scranton. They have a wide (5+ brands) selection with many in luxury status, and these brands range from 2K to 18k range. My Experience: I found the store well-planned and laid out. The staff, including at least two generations of Boccardos, were present, and 1/3 greeted me as the others were busy. They left me alone to peruse the store, then advanced to assist me when they saw I was ready for attention; they approached me for what type of watch I was in the market. I was dressed in jeans and a leather jacket and treated like a customer interested in an excellent wrist piece, the same as in Chicago, where I was last month at the Omega, Tudor, and Breitling boutiques. The Watch: Though they did not have what I was looking for, they had a Zebra, a Seiko-Prospex LX, for a STEAL! You can not beat a watch that blurs the line and sticks it to the Rolex GMT more than MY new Seiko-Spring Drive Lx, GMT, zaratsu polished titanium Batman. If you want a couple of amateur horologists to banter, this is the watch, and it pairs well with an aged Japanese whisky. The word Seiko and luxury puts a sour taste in the mouth of those pursuing luxury, but the guts in this watch fall short of none. A true engineering marvel. With my fan-boy love for this watch, it has a well-established position in my collection. They have a fantastic display of Longines, Breitling, Oris, Luminox, Bulova, and other watches that fit all budgets. I was pleasantly surprised and will return when the itch needs scratching. This is a decent business, with quality products and great staff interested in their products, at least the watches. As we discussed, I agree with not servicing or dealing with "grey" watches with all the fakes. I would not want to be ripped off by a random fake AP, Rolex, or Omega until these watch-producing companies stand by their product if certified. If they turn you away, it's the right thing to do in their interest, and it's business. Stores like this are relationships, and you have to work on them. read more

My first experience with Boccardo was when I visited with my grandmother to pick out a watch as a high school graduation gift. That purchase, many years ago, set off a chain of events that resulted in horology becoming a passion of mine. I've since earned back the cost of that Bulova many times over by buying and selling watches online--I've owned some of the timepieces that were on that day deemed too expensive--but I'm writing this review to share my string of negative experiences with Boccardo. The first experience occurred a few months after I received the watch. I decided to order another strap. I went in, found one I liked in the strap catalog, left my watch there, and had it installed. As I learned more about watches, I realized that Boccardo willfully sold me--and installed--a watch strap that was too narrow. It turns out that being able to see the spring bar isn't normal. The next bad experience came when I inherited a small gold Omega. The leather strap was in bad shape. I went down to Boccardo, perused the strap book, made sure the strap was the right width, ordered a strap, left the watch there, and picked it up a few days later. As it turned out, the strap that was installed had a stainless steel buckle. I was too scared at the time to call attention to this, but I'm baffled at how any self-respecting jeweler could have mismatched the metal (on an Omega!) and not felt ashamed when handing it to a customer. Years later when I was buying and selling watches frequently, I bought a vintage Gucci quartz watch with an unorthodox lug configuration. No matter what tools I used, I simply couldn't change the broken strap. I took it to Boccardo during a break from school. The same guy who I had dealt with several times before was outright pompous: "Gucci? Call Gucci." They had a policy on refusing to service grey-market watches, but this was a (relatively) inexpensive vintage watch clearly out of warranty. I explained my situation--calling Gucci was clearly out of the question--but left the store without being offered any help. The final and most egregious offense came when my grandmother needed her Jaeger LeCoultre table clock cleaned. This is a fine brand, and I saw this same clock for sale in Tsim Sha Tsui in Hong Kong for $1200. At this point, I begged my grandmother not to take it to Boccardo. However, she had taken it there before and been satisfied, so we went to Boccardo. We brought the clock down and received it back within a reasonable amount of time. Days after getting the clock cleaned, I noticed that all of the original stickers from inside the glass and on the movement (including the prominent Jaeger LeCoultre label itself) had been removed. We went back and showed them pictures of what the clock had looked like before. They seemed unfazed by this but told us that they would rectify the situation. To me, this meant spending $20 and getting custom die-cut stickers made to match the originals. To Boccardo, this meant doing nothing. I followed up several days later via phone, and the older gentleman who might be the owner told me that he was "trying to get them back" as if the original stickers could have possibly been recovered. I had consistent negative experiences with this business over a period of several years. I felt patronized, if not outright taken advantage of, due to my age and perceived lack of experience and wealth. I write this now with the hope that would-be customers can make more informed decisions based on my experience and because I do hold out hope that the business can one day offer a respectable level of customer service when it comes to timepieces. read more

I cannot stress enough how a-hole-ish these Boccardos are. My mother bought my brother and me nice watches from them for Christmas, nothing too fancy, but not cheap. I have had no problem with mine, but my brother had them swap the strap at purchase. The strap kept falling off. I took it in for him recently to be fixed, and I'm already standing there for several minutes, and the father is on the phone shooting the breeze, the wife is shmoozing with a woman who just casually dropped a good buck about the wife's kitchen project, and the son, apparently the only person there who works, is already helping another customer. The mother then asks the son to check this woman out with whom she's shmoozing so she can keep chatting... while the son already helping someone else, and I'm standing there waiting. After I'm there at least 10 minutes, the son then interrupts helping the other guy to check on me, rather than the father getting off the phone or the wife cutting her kitchen remodel recap short. I explain the issue, and he says 'no problem, we'll fix it and ship it to your brother.' My brother calls two days later and they still haven't reattached the strap. Later that day, they say they fixed it, so ok. He gets the watch in the mail... and the strap is off again in the box before he even opened it. I just can't wrap my head around this. I guess if we aren't casually dropping 10K a week with these people, and we're not interested in how their kitchen remodel is going, then we may as well go f@&k ourselves! Avoid these people. Maybe they fell down and smacked their little heads on the pavement and woke up thinking they're Van Cleef & Arpels? But having been to Van Cleef, I can tell you I didn't stand there waiting ten minutes for someone to assist or have the product keep breaking over and over. read more

My fiance purchased my engagement ring here. He had a wonderful purchasing experience with them. Even after moving to NJ, we still drove back to Scranton to shop for our wedding bands. They adjusted their prices to reflect the current drop in price of gold, and even gave us a discount for being return customers. They were courteous and not pushy. They even called their dealers to find the best price for us. Their prices were well below every jeweler's in NJ. We picked up the rings and they are of course, beautiful. Every time we go, they offer to steam my engagement ring for me quickly. It always comes out sparkling clean. I can't say enough great things about them. Two generations of my family have been customers of three generations of the Boccardo family. Their service and attention to customers' needs is A-1. We've never been shoppers at the high-end of the spectrum - we are average people who tend to make purchases from the lower-priced end of their inventory, but are treated with as much respect and attention for purchasing a $100 pair of earrings as someone who is in there to buy a $10000 watch.
