I had waited a year to redeem this massage as it was a gift. I'm fully vaccinated, continue to wear a mask, and was going to request the therapist not touch my hands or face during the massage but did not get that far. Upon entering, he was not wearing a mask and went for a handshake. I turned down the handshake, he joked about this. During the wait, I asked if he was vaccinated, he stated that he was not, even though he appears to be of the first age group to have become eligible. He offered to put a mask on, but I did not trust his judgement in reference to the vast other personal ways of keeping clients safe. Quality: Glenn is fantastic in what he does. Not only is he knowledgeable about every little detail he's doing, he explains the health benefits you receive from the different services he offers. One of my visits was a couple's massage with my girlfriend, and he arranged for another therapist to come in named Dave. While I was disheartened that the other therapist might not be as good, Dave proved to be just as skilled himself and my girlfriend and I had a fantastic experience. Price: The deals offered are great, especially if you are a student. A one-hour massage is typically $50, but first time guests and students receive $10 off. If you're a first time guest AND a student, Glenn is willing to combine them! I feel like I am receiving my money's worth every time. Atmosphere: The building itself is old and not what I was originally expecting in a massage parlor, but while you're lying on the table, you're not taking in the atmosphere. I would best describe the decor to be "quaint" and "humble". He puts on some very soothing spa music that really accentuates the mood. Location: The location is in Downtown Champaign as part of a five story office building, and there is ample parking for customers. Located nearby are shops and cafes that are in walking distance, making it a great idea to plan a day experience before or after getting the massage. When I went beforehand, I stopped at the Aroma Cafe until it was time for my massage, lending for a great day. Consistency: I have been to the Body Therapy Center twice before and received amazing service both times. Final Thoughts: While some might be expecting a more glamorous and fancy experience, Glenn gives you a no-frills massage that will leave you feeling better than you ever have. I have gone three times and have never been disappointed! Glenn is a very personable man. He is quick to answer any questions, starts on time, focuses extra attention on any problem areas you have mentioned, and is willing to be quiet- but usually prefers talking :). The massage is wonderful- i could skip the leg and arm massage but the pressure he uses on the back and the technique (whatever he feels like doing that day!) for feet, hands, and face are pleasant. He is completely appropriate and I didn't feel uncomfortable. I give the massage a 5 stars. Now for the place- its an old building downtown... i got lost coming in the wrong door (my fault). The website has very detailed instructions but it's still confusing (the building...not the directions). There's one elevator to take you to the 5th floor....or take the 5 flights of stairs and be sweaty ;) The entrance to the suite is fun and the room is dated. I chalk it up to him being a guy who is more concerned with giving a good massage, and not charging excess, than updating a room that people aren't going to see for the hour they are on a table. If he could put something underneath the table where your head rests so you aren't looking at dusty speaker that might be helpful? Anyways, the only other "complaint" would be offering water- he has water but never offers it... I'm sure it's free for the taking but after a massage other places they always offer a glass and remind you that it's important to drink water to help flush the system. However, I just don't feel like I get a great massage from him...his stroke is too fast for me, and I don't care for the oil he uses-it's a dry type rather than a true oil. His location is on a very old building with challenging parking and his room doesn't seem too clean and fresh. My husband got me a gift certificate for a one-hour massage with Glenn. I have to say, this was probably the BEST one-hour massage I've ever had. When you go in, you fill out a sheet describing any problems you might be having, the amount of pressure you desire, etc. If you're a first-time client, he'll have you fill out a questionnaire afterwards so you can offer any suggestions. I selected the deep tissue massage, and then also marked on the paper I wanted firm pressure. That's not anything that I got. I was slathered in oil and rubbed... literally, felt just the way it sounds. Like when you're trying to make sure the marinade gets all over the chicken. Oil everywhere... hair, etc. The least relaxing or productive (in releasing muscle tension) massage I have ever had. He never asked if the pressure was good during the massage, just kind of decided to do his own rubbing thing I suppose. And... my massage was a couple months ago when masks were still to be worn, when I walked in the therapist was not wearing a mask. He offered for me to take mine off, which I declined, and thankfully so because he couldn't stop coughing. He would take his hands off me to cough and then put them back on me to rub some more... He is super professional which is important since he is a male therapist and I am a woman, which can be awkward sometimes. The only downside is I was not a fan of the building it is in, its a little old and smells kind of funny, but his space/room was totally fine. I went with a friend and they had Angela and I had Glenn. Their experience with her was a better one than I had with him. I'm not sure if she's normally there for massages or if she's just there to help him out. My friend said she was very communicative, applied the right pressure, and gave the appropriate amount of attention to the areas that they needed help with. Even used a rolling pin! The room they were in was nicer than mine as well and had better (lower) lighting. The place is in a really old building so it's weird at first but they have great customer service. The only reason this isn't a 4 star is because of my experience. My room was very bright and maybe that's just a personal preference but it didn't help with relaxation. The table was wobbly and just the quality of massage overall wasn't what I was looking for. If you have Glenn and want firmer pressure make sure you say so from the beginning because I think that's where I messed up. I started having massages with some regularity when I was a graduate student at the University of Arizona. They were great and very helpful therapeutically. When I moved to Champaign I tried several different massage places and there was no comparison to the quality of the massages I had by the professional in Tucson. Then I found Glen. I have been getting massages with Glen for more than 10 years. My son and daughter have also gotten massages with Glen. We all think he is super! My most frequent issue is related to very long stents of working on the computer. So neck and other pain related to this perpetual activity has been a common issue for me. Glen has great knowledge of muscle connections and I've always come out feeling better. He has also given me exercises to help so that I don't get the muscles so tied up as often. One time I had a rib that was causing me a lot of pain. Glen was able to work on me to get the rib slightly moved. I never again had any related pain. That was a much better experience than having to take pain meds to deal with the pain and would not have fixed the problem. I have frequently taken advantage of the program Glen offers to pre-pay for multiple visits, which results in an overall discount. I agree that Glen is TOTALLY professional and folks - male or female - should have no concern while obtaining a full body massage. The building in which Glen has his business was at one time the home of the famous Robeson Department Store - a business in Champaign until early 1990. I personally applaud this use of existing in core properties. But.... Glen's business is on the 5th floor of the Robeson Building. The building elevator is slow as hell! Be prepared to push buttons on the elevator to close the door and open the door in the hope that it might have some effect in getting a quicker elevator response. The building owner who leases these spaces should definitely do some infrastructure upgrades! Over the years I have visited numerous "spas" in various states which offered plans for special wraps, massages, and/or a sauna treatment (some with hot springs treatments). TERRIBLE MASSAGE! Absolutely one of the WORST MASSAGES I HAVE EVER HAD! Due to this I actually wrote Glenn, the Massage Therapist, concerning my experience, and not only did he not provide any semblance of good customer service, but he chose to basically try to insult me about my knowledge of things, deny or acknowledge any of my grievances, and threaten me in a way. My experience as I outlined it to Glenn: 1. Glenn was clearly ill.. He had a runny nose and was sneezing.. He was clearly fatigued early due to this as well. -Glenn responded that my energy gave him the runny nose and caused the sneezing and made him tired. 2. After blowing his nose, the masseur failed to either wash or sanitizer his hands in any way. He instead went right back to touching the clients. -Glenn's response was such that he didn't find it important to clean or sanatize his hands before touching client again. ---So expect to get snotted on. 3. The quality of the massage overall was very minimal for specifically Michael.. I paid for a neuromuscular/deep tissue massage and instead got a general feel good effleurage massage.. -Glenn responded that I didn't mark on his intake form that I wanted what I paid for and again, he could sense the energies of my body and that told him to provide me with less than what I had already paid for (I paid for these massages in advance from CIsaves). Other things worth mentioning: There is no free parking. It's located in downtown Champaign. I wasn't prepared for metered parking because when I made my appointment, Glenn didn't make me aware of this. When I first contacted The Body Therapy Center, it took several days after leaving both text and voicemail to schedule my appointment. Don't believe the website when it says "text for faster scheduling". Glenn obviously subscribes to alternative and holistic medical practices and beliefs. Great for him #alternativefacts. Not so great for those of us who believe in actual science with actual backing. I bought these massages, one for my girlfriend and one for me, as part of an anniversary celebration for us. I feel AWFUL because it was my girlfriend's first time and she got this AWFUL experience. She also reported to me later that he gave a very creepy vibe and really didn't make her feel comfortable. I recently had a prenatal massage with Glenn as I received a coupon from CISaves for Mother's Day. It was my first time there, but not in the building itself. The building is old, but that is in no way a reflection of the service received at Body Therapy. It was pretty hot in the room itself, especially for an 8 month pregnant woman, but other than that, the message was fantastic. He has been in the business for almost 30 years, so he clearly knows what he's doing. I will definitely go back to him and refer him and the center to others. read more
