I ordered cappuccino for "take away" from the young female barista who was diligent at the espresso machine. While she was preparing my coffee, I noticed several bags of green and white coffee on the shelves bearing the Mortimer brand name. I asked her, "Was the coffee Italiano ? She said, "Sir, I told you to wait for your coffee"! Whoa, I was taken back for a second, then explained that I only wanted to know the coffee's origin. I stood to the side of the counter and the girl smiled and stated, "I think English beans, It's our brand of coffee". My anticipation for a wonderful cold early morning in Amsterdam just went limp and sadly never improved - This type of attitude is not the norm in Amsterdam which we experienced - but everyone has a bad day from time to time. My two cups of cappuccino were ready, which were oddly small for 4€ (see pic, and you decide). With a knee jerk reaction, I still tipped the girl, grabbed some sugar and coffee cup covers and left the shop. This brief interaction tainted my expectation of this cafe, especially in an area that is tourist heavy. So here I am, wanting to sit on their big terrace which is unfortunately a bit drizzled on by rain, I will sit inside, window side. I like the place. Makes me suddenly wonder what bugs are hiding in the fur, stylishly draped over some of the chairs. I'm squeamish for bugs. Luckily easy distracted, so i'm leaning back against it while ordering my cuppa joe. I'm ordering my espresso macchiato, which taste is good but not as scalding hot as i like it to be. And as that was gone in a split second, I'm having a soup, to warm me up (and/or prolong the stalling) It's a chunky tomato soup with bell pepper. I am not a big fan of soup, but a great executed soup i can truly appreciate. So I do. The young staff is friendly but the boy seems nervous. On his "did you enjoy your soup" I have to suppress the need to yell "NO". Not because i dislike him, he seems sweet, but just to see his reaction. I am weird that way. It's a small quaint little place and the line starts on the other side of the street! There were a quite a few people in front of us, but we were eager to stay for the experience. I believe we waited for about 30 minutes, which wasn't bad at all (compared to Los Angeles restaurants). Interior was packed with happy people and when I said small, it's small. We got lucky with a seat near the door. Definitely not ADA compliant to my American folks. We both love the vibe and the food!! Drinks: Cappuccino and Latte Machiato - just as good as a coffee shop! Wild mushroom toast was the perfect choice. Love a good vegetarian dish that has flavor and taste good. The New Amsterdam Benedict was a big heavy, but thoroughly enjoyed it.
