Last night we finally dined at the newly opened Mama Masala Glengormley . My 5 year old daughter,…read morewife and I dined and we were missing my 9 year old, who was at a friends party but gave us strict instructions to bring her back a pepperoni pizza!! I've dined in the original Mama Masala Londonderry (owned by the same owners) and really enjoyed it so was looking forward to tasting the food! I've been following the journey of this new restaurant avidly (Metamorphosis ) and have written about the Story. Whilst we looked at the extensive Indian and Italian menu we nibbled on fresh, crisp poppadoms served with three sweet dips/chutneys. The menu was a very well thought out and well designed one and there were plenty of dishes to choose from!! We chose Vegetable samosa and garlic prawns to start and my little one wanted her chicken nuggets and chips!! My wife also had a mojito which she said was delicious. The presentation of both the prawns and samosas was very elegant and appetising. The 2 large king prawns were served butterflied, with tails on and in a rich, garlic sauce and were amazing. The three filo samosas looked a bit oily and when we cut into them discovered they had meat in them. We flagged this up and the staff were very apologetic and the proprietor Gagan personally served us fluffy perfect Punjabi vegetable samosas. These were exactly like one gets in Punjab itself and delicious suffice to say!! The portion size and taste of the nuggets and chips was excellent. For main course my wife opted for the chicken penne and I the rara gosht with Mama Masala Nan. When these were served it was quite literally a "wow" moment. The pasta was served in a large dish, the lamb in a deep oval dish and there was plenty in each. What really struck us was the authenticity, the very generous quality meat content (chicken breast, lots of tender chunks of lamb interspersed with minced lamb or keema) and the flavours!!! The pasta was in a creamy, yet not too heavy sauce with a nice touch of sun dried tomatoes and basil. The rara gosht is certainly one of the best Indian dishes I've ever had, even my wife loved it and she's not a big lamb eater. The nan was soft, full of flavour (Chillies and coriander) and was ideal with the lamb and pasta!! The dish was full of flavour and spice and not oily or sweet or artificially coloured. This was the real McCoy!! Our waiter remembered that we had ordered a pepperoni pizza to take and he duly presented it to us as we were leaving. The venue was superb, the staff were tremendous and the food was exceptional. I can now say that this will be a firm favourite of ours and is highly commended!!

The very first Indian restaurant in Belfast (and Northern Ireland) was the Mogul circa 1970's. I was first in their door on day one lunchtime. It was superb. The very first waiter I met was over six foot, a Pakistani man who spoke with a strong Glaswegian accent. I'm sure the three course lunch was under £2. We got to know the two partners who started it all, over 15 or more years with four of us going to this restaurant every weekend and it was always joyful. The best waitress there was Kaye. Kabir was head chef and eventually Farouk one of the sons of the partners started to learn the business. Our lives took turns and we stopped going, but we knew when the Mogul business closed that they started up the Indian Ocean in Carrickfergus opening two more including this one. It's been over 20 years since we've been to the Carrickfergus restaurant but about two years since we went to Glengormley. That's my memory so let me deal with the food in this place first. The tikka masala sauce and the pilau rice has unnecessary artificial food colouring and far too much sugar. It's gratuitous. The korma sauce too was really sugar loaded. The Peshwari nan breads were not great tasting; they were crisp breads with measly fillings. They could easily be and should be much better but I suspect that with no tandoor oven they can't make truly great nans. They didn't have seekh kebab as a starter but did rustle it up on request. They couldn't muster a mattar paneer main which I find extraordinary as paneer was in the menu with spinach but on refusal the waiter oddly suggested doing something with chickpeas. I'm sure there's worse food like Quinoa. I opted for a king prawn puri to start, my wife has the seekh kebab which she liked. The puri were small discs of bread but not what I expected. There were 7 warm water prawns and each prawn sat on a puri and had about a tablespoon of sauce that was good but I wouldn't order it again. My main was an almost dry tandoori mix with no sauce on the side. The meat was tasty but I felt it overpriced for what was in the dish and I began to think the sauce came out of a Patak's jar. One of my companions got a mean portioned onion bhaji starter which he disliked and a chicken korma and asked for it to be tandoori chicken but it wasn't. He sure knew he had a sugar hit. The restaurant which was packed was very well decorated and light filled. Seating was comfy. Parking was very limited. The staff were friendly but I sensed price-gouging with food, somewhat better than mediocre, but not near value for money - there was nothing at all that would make me return.

Lets face it, cooking on a Friday night is never a realistic option, after a long week of work your…read morebrain often can't comprehend even the simplest of tasks - for this reason Friday night should be Takeaway night. This Friday we decided we would get an Indian Takeaway from Indian Ocean, It has recently opened in Holwood and from the outside it resembles a palace rather than an Indian Takeaway - it is pristine white with it's ambient lighting shining from the inside beckoning in passersby. The ordering process is simple, I called and placed an order for 4 people, I was able to ask them questions about the dishes without creating any confusion about our order, which is sometimes the case. I was then told my order would be ready within 20 minutes, which is rapid - especially when you're ordering 4 meals. On collection the lady taking payment asked if I was having a party, which was kind of embarrassing as we'd obviously over ordered - this made me begin to question my eating habits. Having now tasted the food I will be over ordering every time! I was able to pay on card when I arrived which was much simpler. The food was great and one little touch I really liked was that they labeled all the container so that when we got home we were able to identify who's was who's - all these types of things help get your dinner on your fork and in to your mouth quicker and cut down the chance of your food getting cold. As mentioned the service, restaurant and the food were all amazing (even the next day) and I will definitely be back!
