What you're seeing ladies and gentlemen is one of the most cohesive meals I've had for lunch in a while. This balanced meal consists of a quality sloppie joe, a delectable German potato salad, and a pickle. I'm normally not one for the pickles, but this was the reprieve from to the sweet sloppy (pause) and the German potato salad. Speaking of that salad, the German potato salad flava was on 10s. My mom thought it was a bit too sweet, but I still dug it. Bakeries like this are why I'm here, and also why I'm posting this delicacy. The baked goods product is always good. Went from n at 8:30 on Saturday morning and most things were sold out. I had some questions about baked goods I did not recognize. No labels to help a Katna woman who offered to help was very curt. She wanted to know how much product I intended to buy. I didn't know until she answered my questions. She snapped back, and said she needed to know so she could use the right packaging. I had to commit to a quantity. I chose 6 or less. I thought no need to be so gruff. But the workers have become less friendly and aggressive since longtime ownership is no longer there. read more

You guys ROCK! Amidst a sea of closed restaurants and bars is a hidden gem in Jefferson! My mom and niece are up from Florida, visiting for spring break and prom dress shopping, only to see it all cancelled by covid-19. It's a rainy day and we're driving back roads, just to be out and happened on the open sign on BonTon, wow we're we pleasantly surprised! Thought we might get a pastry, which we did, but also a well-seasoned, homemade beef burgundy dinner with yummy mashed potatoes, gravy and veggies. We shared a turkey, bacon and cheese with homemade cranberry relish and a bowl of baked potato, bacon soup - both DELISH! The bread, the salads and the sweets, OH MY! They're normally a catering company and restaurant and I can't wait for them to cater anything if mine! Thanks for being open, friendly and fantastic! Can't wait to come back!! read more

I honestly feel bad for my initial thoughts on the bakery. We're a cake family, we love fun, crazy cakes. We've moved all around the world and I didn't expect much from a bakery in little Jefferson Wisconsin. I stand corrected. We ordered a cake for my littles 7th Birthday and it was amazing. Amazing!!! Instead of gross fondant, she used ice cream cones and covered that in frosting. Talk about a happy kid! The price was great, I would have, and have paid more! There is a reason this place has been in business for decades! Their baked good are absolutely scrumptious and they have something for everyone! The price is insane too! I had a red velvet cupcake with buttercream frosting piled a mile high for the whooping price of $1.00. I have enjoyed countless doughnuts from here. You must have a peanut butter and jelly one though. Seriously.... Go try one already! They have proper country lunches like meatloaf mashed potatoes and gravy etc. Just like Grandma used to make. I also have to mention that this place is generous! I have called for donations various times and they always oblige. Delicious food, wonderful service, perfect price point, and good people! Our family had a celebration of life for our late Grandfather yesterday. The weather was terrible, the roads were bad and after picking up our order ealier in the day we realized we had forgotten part of our order and it was already close to the event. Bon Ton was able to bring the rest of our order to Janesville at the last minute. Their customer service helped make our event an enjoyable experience. I have been going to this bakery my entire life. The Persian sweet rolls with cinnamon and chocolate frosting are amazing! It is the same family recipe that goes back generations. All of their doughnuts are awesome. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. The frosted Christmas Cookies have been a family tradition since I was a kid. In more recent years they sell out fast, so you have to put your order in early for Christmas. The secret is they sell the Christmas cookies in different holiday shapes during Easter and most other holidays. The demand isn't as high during other holidays so you can get them without a problem. Fifteen years ago, or so they started serving food, and doing catering. In typical Bon Ton fashion their food is awesome! They serve one or two items for lunch each day. It is all amazing comfort food. The Bon Ton also will deliver lunch to elderly people, which was a huge help to my family recently. read more

OMG. I discovered this amazing gem passing through Jefferson recently. This bakery is 100 years old and I'm pretty sure the woman who served me was as well. She is a part of the original family that started the business literally 100 years ago. She was the sweetest, most adorable old lady and I want to adopt her as my grandma and have her give me all the hugs and cookies. I should have asked to see pictures of her grandchildren, I know she had them ready! When I tell you everything I tried tasted like the woman you wish was your grandma lovingly made it from scratch. I stopped in just to look around, and not buy anything, but everything looked too amazing, and I wasnt disappointed. My only regret is that I did not try more things! In addition to baked goods they also had the best (non-fried) cheese curds I've ever tried. I bought a bag even though I had cheese curds at home already. Only downside was that by 4pm it was very picked over and there were very few things left. I am thinking of driving back to Jefferson (from Madison) just to try more things. This place has been in business for over 100 years, if that doesn't speak for itself, I don't know what does. I'm not even much of a donut person, but people have fought wars over things that don't even begin to touch Bon Ton's chocolate Pershing's. MMmmmm! I remember looking forward to these as a special treat when I was a kid, and I don't think I've ever even bothered trying any other donuts from here. The best bread anywhere, and they are a family business which makes them ultra freindly, We drive from Palmyra just to get the bread and my husband loves the prune doughnuts. They are certainly worth the drive, i love the smell of the bread when waiting to make you purchases, but it means we always have to eat something, before we leave. real bread lovers you must visit, and buy the small garlic breads, in bags on the back wall, a must for lunches and i cant keep them in the fridge, they are eaten as soon as i buy them. read more

Flaky pinwheels, mini apple pies that look like small volcanos, peanut butter-cream stuffed pastry treats---YUMMMOOOO!!! Fifteen of us piled into this bakery (first stop on the 2012 Wine-apalooza Tour) and everyone one was happy! I didn't give five stars because there were no brownies--apparently someone came in before we did and bought the half-tray they had. The bread racks were also empty--but as soon as we said something trays of fresh breads came flying out from the back. The loaves had been cooling and there hadn't been time to get them out. We were told that the rye (both with caraway and without) was still cooling. We could buy them as long as we didn't need them to be sliced. Bring out the BREAD!!!! The bakery ladies made a point of telling us that the bread bags needed to be kept open so the bread could cool properly. There's seating inside and street side so you can have that morning treat. I saw that they also serve a good looking hot lunch. We were too early to enjoy this, but the menu changes daily and the cold salads that were available looked delicious. The Baker, third generation, came out and chatted with us. This bakery has been in biz since 1939. Prices were extremely reasonable and everything delish! Very, very clean restrooms! . read more

Their lunch menu changes daily, so check their website ahead of time to make sure they have something you like on a given day, but chances are they will. Go early, get some extra and save it for dinner that night! The folks behind the counter treat you like family and the whole place just leaves you warm and fuzzy. And their prices are extremely reasonable. You will not be disappointed, particularly if you are looking for some comfort food. Their soups are AMAZING! Check the fridge for leftover soup from the day before for $6/quart. Unbeatable for home-made yummy soup! I can't recommend this place enough. My office was across the street from Bon-Ton for 5 years (recently moved to Lake Mills), and I went there once a week and was never disappointed.
