Awful haircut! I was explicit about how to cut my hair. Undercut layers with the top layer being the longest, cut horizontally so it lays flat, no thinning scissors or razors, etc. (My hair is very thick.) I wear it as a bob that looks like a straight line at the bottom. My husband was, during the pandemic, able to master the haircut but didn't want the job forever. It was cut so it is choppy and uncontrollable: looks like it was butchered by a child. The stylist's strength's is appearing to listen and take in what you are asking for when she must be thinking: I'll do whatever I want. I've been going to Kate at Bona Terra for a year now. She is wonderful to work with and has helped me transform my style over the last year to something that I am VERY happy with. She took the time to listen to my wants, and even asked about my lifestyle and how much time I usually spend on my hair. When we agreed on a look, she even helped explain the styling techniques so that I could recreate the look on my own. After a few mornings of practice, I was nailing it on my own. The salon is a great size and always looks clean. The staff is friendly helped me zero in on my favorite styling product that I've ever tried, and I've bought a few bottles of their shampoo and conditioner as well. For me, I am paying more for styling here than I was used to (run of the mill $10-15 men's cuts), but this a rare part of my life where the quality of the service, experience, and products speak for themselves. In my eyes, it's well worth it. I feel more confident in my appearance now than I did before coming to Bona Terra. It's hard to put a price on that. read more

First time here today and my stylist was Tiana (sp?). She was fabulous!! So nice and such a talented hair stylist. I have very thick and tricky hair. She really listened to me and was able to combine what I wanted with what she knew would look best. She spent a lot of time with me too. Her techniques are top notch! Very cute Aveda Salon too. Maddie put highlights in hair and did it incorrectly for my hair type. While I was there, Maddie consulted with another a stylist who explained how it should have been done. We discussed a time that would work to do the correction, it was discussed as a correction and no charge was mentioned. I paid over $150 for this service. The day I was supposed to come in I got a call from the salon stating that Maddie has told them to tell me the charge would be $70. I stated that as I had already paid for the service that was done incorrectly I did not want to pay more, the front desk person understood and took me off the books without a cancellation fee and stated that Maddie would be informed that discussion of cost would need to be up front. I stopped in here for the Brookside East Holiday Event, and I left this place feeling floored by the staff's generosity. I actually had a question about skin care, and I was guided to an esthetician, Heather, who went above and beyond explaining what the problem might be, how to remedy it, and then suggesting products to use (usually, it's just the product suggestions that are given). I was impressed at the thoroughness of the customer service, especially since it was a bit busy. I'm planning on going back for some actual service (e.g. nails, makeup, or a facial) just based on this experience alone. read more

I had a strange experience at Bona Terra. When I made my appointment, I asked for a stylist who was good with curly hair and someone who was not a novice. I arrived and met my stylist, and the first thing she asked me was, "Do you ever wear your hair straight?". I said, "No." "Oh," she said, "Do you like your hair straight?" I said, "No." So after she gives me a shampoo she starts straightening my hair with a brush and a blow dryer. I thought that was a bit odd, but I have had my hair cut by novices before who needed my hair to be straight in order to cut it. So I didn't say anything. Then a couple minutes later I look over and damded if she isn't using a flat iron on my hair! I simply pulled my head away and said, "I don't want it straightened." So then she went on with my haircut and finished it. Then she says, "Do you like it?" And my jaw was on the floor because it was stick straight. So I just said, "I don't know. I don't wear it straight." So then I went and stuck my head under a faucet to wet it and bring back the curls. I looked in the mirror and the cut was nothing amazing but fine. We had our first and last visit to Bona Terra Salon on 9/15/20. I made a haircut appointment with Della for my 58 year old client with short hair who has advanced Alzheimer's. She was aware she needed and wanted a haircut, but did not recall her preferred style. As her caregiver, I was aware it had been a while since she had a haircut, and that she needed a manageable style. Della cut her hair, and said she includes bang trim in between cuts. Seemed great. After her first nap, my clients hair was disheveled, wings sticking out and all. On my next work day, I talked about her haircut with her husband. He shared that his wife traditionally wears a short pixie cut that is easy to care for. I called the salon to make a second appointment with Della. I presumed there may be an additional fee, (and of course, another tip) but did not imagine the unprofessional response we received! Seems Della was not interested is seeing that this client was satisfied, and made excuses that she had done her job with a good consult and cut. The fact is this is not a manageable cut and looks bad. Instead of a gracious, understanding, or caring response, we were given excuses. This client needed shorter bangs and sides, and that was all. She would have been a loyal client for life. The salon is in my clients (Brookside)neighborhood, which is very important for someone dealing with serious memory issues. The "dry cut" cost $50 ( plus tip), and since this is Aveda salon, I thought I was dealing with an experienced professional who would strive to have satisfied customer. Big disappointment! (and confusing for Alzheimer's client). She may have memory challenges, but she's never been to a stylist who seems to have no care for customer satisfaction. read more

I've been going to Bona Terra for about a year. I am a longtime Aveda customer and love having access to an Aveda salon in the BKS neighborhood. Kate is my stylist. My haircuts have been terrific and I've received many compliments on them. Plus there is the added bonus of a scalp, neck and shoulders massage....heavenly. I highly recommend Bona Terra salon. I had such a great experience here yesterday. I've never been someone who takes their hair super seriously, I usually just go to the cheap walk in places for a wash and haircut. But I decided to give this salon a try and I'm so glad that I did! I called and was able to get in that day with Sierra. She was chill and easy to talk to, she listened to what I wanted and gave me some insight along the way about what she was doing to make sure everything would work with my hair type. She gave me a scalp massage and then shampoo with a botanical treatment, then a cut and blow dry/style. She let me know what products she was using but wasnt pushy about me buying them. The products all smelled so good and natural, I love that Aveda salons use lots of plant derived ingredients in their products - it was almost like a spa treatment. The friendly receptionist offered to bring me hot tea, iced tea, water or coffee while I was in the chair. My hair looked, felt, and smelled so fantastic by the end, I've never been happier with a haircut! Today I woke up and washed/styled with my own tools and products and it still was just as perfect as yesterday. I'm a believer, no more great clips. All in all the service was $64 and it was totally worth it, I will definitely go back again! read more

I have been going to Bona Terra for about a year. Tiana listens to what I want in a cut and a style, and gives good feedback on what will work for my head and hair type. I am new to the area so gave this place a shot. When I arrived a few minutes before my apt time the staff was having a meeting and didn't really acknowledge me. It was awkward. They quickly finished their meeting and then I was taken back by my stylist. My stylist was very nice and polite and asked me for my input however did not listen to it. She gave me water and snacks which was nice. I asked for a trim with layers to be cut below the shoulder but long enough that it won't flip out when it hits my shoulders. She specifically asked what I don't like in haircuts and I said I don't like when the layers are blunt ends and choppy and that is what she did and my hair flips out as it hits my shoulders. I also asked if she would texturizing my hair and she did not do it despite my second request. She blow dried it but did not style my hair in any way and seemed more focused on selling me dry shampoo or hair heat protectant. She was super nice and I think she sensed my disappointment in my haircut when she gave me a coupon for $20 off for being a new customer. I won't be returning and may even have to get another cut elsewhere to fix my hair. read more

While i hated cheating on my regular stylist I was very excited to have a new salon in my neighborhood...I was offered a discount coupon since it was my first visit which was a nice gesture. However, beyond disappointed and dissatisfied after my visit. Very inexperienced (and that's an understatement) stylists for an Aveda salon or any salon for that matter. Super slow and a great deal of product pushing. I was in for a cut, color and highlights. Unfortunately because my stylist was so terrible (and after about two hours into it) I could only muster the patience to finish the color. By the time I was ready for the blow dry I was at my wits end. The stylist asked if I had ever had my hair blown dry with a round brush, like it was a new concept... I'm a 47 year old housewife btw...been coloring my hair for a LONG time...Round brush blowouts are a way of life... I expressed my feelings to the owner, who seemed pleasant enough and appreciated the feedback yet was not saavy enough to problem solve and offer any remediation. I finally got up out of the chair half way through the blow dry with half my hair wet because I couldn't take any more. I ended up paying the FULL price (which was not cheap and considering half my hair was WET and the other half unstyled!!! ) I would never allow a dissatisfied customer to pay FULL price, especially knowing word of mouth and reviews such as this are such an integral part of your neighborhood small business success, in addition to the fact its just fundamentally WRONG! . read more

I could not be happier with my experience with this salon, my hair color, cut and the customer service. My stylist is Kate and she is wonderful with my curly hair. I always feel that I am her priority during my appointment and love all of the extras that come with this being an Aveda salon. The complimentary massages and touch up at the end are a wonderful perk. Shannon has been a wonderful resource for me on products and she is so delightful to work with.
