In 1968 my parents bought me a hand sized set of scriptures that I wanted for my birthday. They meant a great deal me. Over the decades I have purchased other sets and different translations, bindings, and sizes. My parents passed long ago so this gift from them is very precious to me. My youngest son got a hold of the book as a baby. Completely my fault. He tore pages out, and tore some in pieces. I was heartbroken but my son means far more to me than a book. Even a book from my parents. I kept the book and all its fragments thinking someday I would find someone who could do the repair properly. I have known Alan since our year at college together so long ago. Years ago he told me about his work at binding books and the really cool projects he was working on. I purchased a Douay Rheims Bible at an estate sale this was a large heavy Bible (12.5 X 9.75 X 6.25 Hardback Black Leather Padded). It was printed sometime between 1903 and 1914. The Binding was separated from the paper the hinges at front and back were completely unusable which made the Bible itself unusable. Alan was able to re-bind the whole thing with new hinges that were actually stronger than the original. He was able to save the historical front cover with title and embossed decorations and restore its luster. He was able to blend that seamlessly the the new leather used on the Back and spine. The spine was printed with gold leaf in a style very similar to the original spine which was not salvageable. The result is a very beautiful historic Bible that looks great and functions well. To begin; Alan was the only contact for this type of work that got back to me. So many thanks for his timing/ promptness. I actually had two books that he repaired which were of sentimental value. The outcome was wonderful; as he explained thoroughly how/ what he could repair. After all one was dated from the 1940s the other from 1953. Historical information as to the process with references was interesting to hear. I knew going in with this type of repair was not only difficult to find and perhaps with cost. However I am so happy that I went through with the process. What's the purpose of items stored in a tote?? One book is now in a shadow box. And, I am inspired to move forward with a few more... Excellent job of repairing my 1875 copy of "History of Ingham and Eaton Counties", which was coming separated at the spine.
