Super cute bookstore in my hometown! I came in looking for a new book that was released the same day and the staff searched high and low throughout the store to find it for me. Much appreciated! There is a large kid's section with chairs for kids to sit and flip through books. Lots of selection for both adults and kids. There is a coffee bar but I didn't get anything this time. I love supporting local bookstores and there were also several items (puzzle, notebooks, tote bags, etc.) that could be given as gifts. Plenty of parking out front and Bookish also hosts events and storytime throughout the month. read more

This is such a cute shop! I am so glad we have a locally owned bookstore here in the Central Valley. They have an abundance of books and you can even online order. They host lots of events in store, so there is always a reason to visit. The coffee cart is a nice touch, but they only serve milk alternatives. read more

I love a good locally owned community oriented bookshop, and Bookish absolutely meets all criteria. I appreciate the special children's section with its own beautifully framed entrance and carpeted flooring. The bookstore has a variety of books, stickers, candles, local art and a small coffee stand. In addition, you can purchase pre-loved books for a discount or even donate books for store credit. I drove an hour to check them out. They have a lot more used titles than new. I prefer new. The used books are mixed in with the new books and a tiny green circle sticker denotes used. They didn't have any Diana Gabaldon or the new Hunger Games Novel. The first clerk I spoke to was very nice and walked over to look for me. The isles were a bit tight and having a few people in the store made it hard to shop. Partly why I gave it 3 stars. The clerk that rang me up didn't say much other than asking me if I wanted a bag. The main reason I gave 3 stars. I bought a book from a fantasy author I have been wanting to try. I just wish they had more variety and would separate the used books. read more

For all the people complaining about price and that Amazon is cheaper: that's the point. Amazon undercuts books until there are no competitors. They sell books at a loss specifically for this point. I'm fine with paying a bit more so a local business that contributes to the community and hosts community events can stay in business. I like browsing and looking at the selection here. I think the old layout was fine, but they've reoriented some shelves recently maybe due to the complaints. I don't understand the reviews that complain about spacing/other people being around. Just say excuse me and move on? If they don't have something that I want in stock, they can easily order it for me. The little stickers and local artist displays are nice. read more

Bookish has a great selection of books. And if there ever is a book that I can't find in store, it is super easy to place an order online or at the counter. And the book usually comes pretty quickly. I went here yesterday with my mom for the first time. It is so cute inside, there's some tables and a charging outlet to charge your phone if needed and the books are well organized by section. In addition to the books, they also have stuff like stickers and other merch made by locals, and some fridges that had some snacks/beverages. They also had a sign advertising a coffee bar that said "coming soon." It's nice to have spaces where you don't feel rushed out. My mom bought a sticker and a shirt and I picked out two books, the employee Courtney(?) was really friendly and chatty about one of the books I selected (insisted that I would love it and she's been enjoying it so far) and told me it only had released the day before! I found that impressive. I'd definitely come here again for some book necessities or to just hangout and maybe try some coffee too. read more

Disappointed. Very limited selection, tiny location, way overpriced, and practically zero used books. Example: Bookish sells Dune for $18 On Amazon, it's $10.90 and without the pretentiousness. Bookmarks with their logo that should be free (it's advertising) they are charging $2 for. Ridiculous. read more

You can find new used books for a good price but new book seem to be above market price that I understand since it's a small business but I know I can get it somewhere els cheaper so I most likely will purchase elsewhere. What an awesome addition to Modesto! I read the article in the Bee about it and it mentioned some coloring for kiddos. My 4-year-old girl, Gracie, is all about coloring right now so I decided to check it out with her and her baby brother on my day off. The atmosphere is truly gorgeous and very unique. There's a whole kids area with small tables, coloring supplies, and comfy chairs for reading. Beautiful wall decor and book themed arch as entryway to kids area. Very fair prices for the used books. Unique other items for sale such as stickers, markers, stuffies, and sensory kits. We didn't feel rushed or unwelcome at all- even when my 1 year old dumped a cup of 40+ crayons on the ground when I was reading to my daughter. Another worker even helped me capture him when he kept speed crawling back to the fun spinning chair while I was trying to check out. So happy we have such a cool place so close by- will definitely be a frequent return customer. read more

Bookish is such a wonderful addition to Modesto. They have such a vast selection of books. There isn't another place in Modesto like this where one can go and find new releases, classics, and used books. The staff is amazing and can recommend titles for you based on your interests. I've discovered many books that I wouldn't normally pick up because of the knowledge and recommendations of the staff there. The events they hold are such a cool addition for our town. I've attended some and have always had such an enlightening good time. The moronic one star review from "Sam" is comical, and actually is a badge of honor for Bookish that a red pill man like "Sam" takes such offense to a clearly welcoming and friendly space. "Sam" maybe needs to crack open a book more often and not be such a little snowflake. I will only ever buy my books from Bookish. They are a superior addition to Roseburg square. Bookish is exactly what conscious booklovers in Modesto need and have been waiting for. You'll find a quaint atmosphere, a great collection of new and used books, kind and enthusiastic employees, and even events like book signings. It's got an adorable kids' section and even a coffee bar! Don't listen to the 1-star haters. See for yourself that "Sam J." leaves almost exclusively 1-star reviews, and though he claims (because of his own political hangups) that Bookish won't "fit in" with the tea shop in the same shopping center, he actually left THEM a negative review as well, calling them "neurotic and inflexible." I know from experience that Bookish fits perfectly into my local shopping center, as I and my family and friends frequent both the bookshop AND the tea house. It seems Sam J. is the one who doesn't fit in. As for Jennifer V.'s 1-star, she seems mostly upset that she can get a certain book cheaper on Amazon. Any complaints about the size of Bookish's collection are essentially coming from corporate cheerleaders who are hoping for a local business to fail in the face of competition with a billionaire. Bookish just opened, and their collection will only grow. Any book you want, they can order for you. The real ones know. The rest can stay home and line Bezos's pockets, I guess. People like that don't even want a local bookshop. read more
