It's not slick like a Half-priced Books location, and it is packed with treasure. Mostly decent prices for 2024 and although I would say the science fiction section is either small or hard to find because it's mixed in with a lot of fantasy, it does have one and I bought some things I'm really happy about finding. I even found something from my to-read list that I didn't think I was going to be able to. I also found a copy of an Anthony Trollope book I've wanted to read for a long time, but couldn't find in the libraries I've tried. My husband went straight for the Christmas section and added some really lovely things to our collection. There's no place to sit, but the very nice person working there (the owner, I think) allowed me to rest my bad back in one of her desk chairs. I wish I had known about this place when I had more people to buy books for, but I'm thrilled to have found it now and I can't wait to go back. Next time, I will treat my best friend to a visit here.

For that reason the books sold focus primarily on the Quakers, Quakerism, and other topics that would be of interest to Quakers and other spiritual seekers. It is not a place to go and pick up the newest best-selling mystery or romance novel. If you are looking for a bookstore focusing on Quaker publications there probably isn't a better one in the country. Even if you're not looking for Quaker publications, but are looking for texts on spiritual matters this bookstore would be an excellent resource for you.

They're especially strong in children's picture books and in books relating to Quakerism (the store is part of Pendle Hill, a Quaker retreat and study center). The books are arranged in thoughtful categories-- peace and social justice, writing, lives in transition, etc. The proprietor is friendly and full of suggestions. Definitely a good place to find a holiday gift for book-lovers.

Their staff is kind, genuine, and knowledgeable. While I don't live close, I will always make the trip to them (or order online!). Also, the events they throw are truly so fun.

The algorithm era makes confirmation bias so hard to get out of, and places to find perspectives…read morethat weren't just cultivated to make you feel better about what you already believe so you're more likely to buy stuff are rare and incredibly valuable. Mavey is one of those rare places. I've gotten great recs from the staff there on everything from fantasy novels to local authors who otherwise wouldn't have landed on my radar. Love this place!
