A wonderful gem of a store that has been in old town for years and years. The people that run this place are wonderful! I wish I could remember the name of the lady who runs this place. My mom, who we lost in September of 2019, used to come here all the time. I was here today, and she still remembered her. She had such nice things to say about her. As other people have said, it doesn't look that big on the outside, but it is huge on the inside. If you can't find what you are looking for, you are probably not looking hard enough. They have new and used books, fiction, nonfiction, cookbooks, travel, rare and out of print books,, a very large children's room, and the list goes on and on. The prices are more than fair.... They also buy used books at a fair rate for store credit . If you don't find what you need this time, they will roll your credit over until the next time you come in. It's really cool that they do that. Once you buy your book, take it across the street to Los Bagels, And you can grab a nice snack while you peruse your purchase. My all-time favorite used book store; whenever I come to this coast (from Philadelphia area) I make a trip, and usually ending up buying more than I should (considering I have to pack up everything I buy). For that matter, I've actually sent stacks of books home via media mail so that I could indulge myself. The staff is helpful (I love the staff picks display!) and the books well organized and accurately categorized so it's easy to find what you want. They have more new books than in previous years, but it's still primarily a used book store. Which is a dying breed, at least on the East Coast, so it's refreshing to browse for used books at really great prices. What's not to like? Nothing, really. Check it out. read more

What a great book store, with both used and new books. Sits on the corner at 2nd Street in downtown Old town, this place from the outside doesn't look it but it is huge once inside. Literally rows upon rows and rows of books, with lots of of shelves, racks and alcoves everywhere loaded with all of kinds of reading material. A first rate staff of friendly, knowledgeable folks who can point you in the right direction and are willing to help you find what you're looking for if they have it or think they might. This shop carries a tremendous amount of hard to find and out of print editions, and pretty much everything is fairly priced for retail resale. They will also buy your old editions and copies at a fair rate of exchange. Which makes the inventory in this cool business ever changing and always interesting. My most recent visit, I scored two out of print art catalogs that I had not seen, both were in great condition and fairly priced at a fraction of the dust jacket price. My son (16yrs old) and I were in this book store today and they were SO helpful. Full of GREAT suggestions! Lovely service! It was so much fun! They were so shot on with their questions, which lead to spot on suggestions. We love the books we purchased, and all at a great price. I can't wait to go back. I noticed they had a wonderful kids section too. But most of all I was so impressed with the service, helpfulness, and the great section of books. I loved walking through the labyrinth of books on shelves! I wasn't looking for anything in particular and then thought of a book that I have been interested in reading. The staff person was very helpful and while they did not have the specific book, offered to order it for me. They did seem to have a big selection so I wouldn't hesitate to check here if I was in town. Their Covid practices of checking in at the door, washing hands, and explaining the rules seem in tune with what's needed to keep everyone as safe as possible. read more

While in town me and my daughter came here as she loves books and bookstores in general. This is a terrific bookstore in Old Town Eureka! They have a nice variety of thoughtfully curated rare and out of print books and are more than fair on pricing. I found a couple rare editions in very good condition including a first edition of "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" and an early "Alice in Wonderland". This adorable book store is located in the heart of old town Eureka right on the corner of all the action. Bootlegger is well stocked for hard to find books and are reasonably priced. They have a wonderful selection of local flavor, art, classics and cookbooks. They also have a beautiful assortment of greeting cards and the place gives you a warm community oriented feel. In fact, I was formerly enamored customer who got to know the two wonderful owner/operators (Nancy & Jennifer) and joined the staff. I love their approach to buying and trading and feel it's a great model. They are important members of the local community and use their physical location to draw a diverse customer base and bring in a fresh and wonderful array of new and used books to browse, hold, and buy. I cannot wait to take my little one on a visit to the burg of Eureka and stop by my old stomping ground to show her the wonders that can be found on their trusty shelves. I swear this place just sucked me in after a late lunch at Los Bagels. And there I stayed for over an hour making the sales staff VERY happy as we cha-chinged our way through, carting out our two dozen varying texts to the awaiting chariot, promptly zoomed next door to Ramone's for shortbread & baklava to make our evening complete then raced back to our rented "chalet" where we launched into a night of decadent reading. You couldn't wish for a more helpful or kinder staff. (They let us bring our dogs in, nice folks) Great prices too. read more

I would say Booklegger is the best overall used bookstore in Humboldt County. The employees are helpful and friendly, and they give pretty good recommendations on their recommendation shelf. The prices are good and the selection is quite adequate. I have bought entire series of novels here, and the occasional nature or science book. Oftentimes I find myself languidly wandering the aisles, brushing my fingers along the spines of texts I have chosen to read in some future that may never come. Ah, Booklegger. read more

So I popped up my email and emailed some of my pub contacts cause I work in the business & checked and yeah not kosher... Not nearly at the level of Eureka Books up the street when it comes to used and antiquarian books, but a good selection nonetheless, plus a few new books also. Highlights are a very good selection of used cookbooks; a good local-interest section including local history and trail guides; an interesting selection of antiquarian books; and a good selection of high-end greeting cards. Absolutely the best bookstore in Eureka. Too much? Well, that is my opinion. Large selection, friendly and helpful staff, a great place to peruse for reading treasures. They are always buying books for trade or cash and usually can do it while you look around. While they mostly sell used, they do have some new and can find anything and get it for you in short order. Right between Los Bagels and Ramones bakeries to boot. If this isn't all enough, the place is a veritable museum of treasures found in old books.
