During our Thanksgiving trip to Arcata, we ducked in here to look for some old vinyl. Considering the eclectic nature of this community, I was not all that surprised to find a pretty awesome little music store. Indeed, the personality of this business matches that of the greater community; that quixotic mix of coming to terms with your own minor quirks and foibles, along with the ability to laugh at yourself. Oh, and I love of just about every kind of music you could imagine. The store had all sorts of records, although these are not 1980s Woolworths prices. I think we spent about 25 bucks for an old GNR album, and found a cool little Grateful Dead piece of art. The key is behind the counter was much cooler than me, but just as kind... I like that when I go in the store. It makes me want to buy things. Other retailers in the Square should take note. All that to say, Arcata is a town with a flavor all its on, and this music store fits right in. I will be sure to stop in the next time I'm passing through to see what other treasures I can find in the stacks. read more

Arcata is a college town, and every college town deserves at least one quality record store. People's Records is that place. With one of the more outstanding selections of QUALITY vinyl I've seen, this centrally located shop puts many of the smaller ones in my hometown of Sacramento to shame. I think one of the biggest positives they have going is their focus on vinyl. So many record stores have neglected their vinyl selection in a desperate attempt to cater to the digital crowd and are now trying to make up for it. Here, it looks and feels like a record store from many decades ago. The selection in any genre, from classic rock to country to rap to reggae, is fantastic. The product is well taken care of. The prices are high, but vinyl prices are al high these days. overall, it's a place that caters to those who are collectors and music lovers. I spoke briefly with the owner who was more than happy to chat with me about music. To be in a strange town relating to a friendly stranger about the Talking Heads speaks a lot to the universality of music. read more

On the plaza for years this independent eclectic, true old school vinyl shop has a good selection of current and vintage vinyl records and albums, with a decent selection of cassette tapes and CDs as well. Also, it's as a good source for music tickets to a lot of the local venues. The staff have always been friendly, knowledgeable and kind in all my dealings, even when I'm not buying anything but just for advice and a reference on pretty much anything music and equipment related. The prices on their vintage vinyl may be a bit more on some copies than online, however I prefer to support my local old school shop and I've found some really obscure, very hard to find, in excellent condition vinyl copies for very reasonable prices. 4 Stars - a cool indie shop with a wide selection of vintage music, knowledgeable staff and competitive prices. 00562 read more

typical college town record store vibes. i typically head to the african and latin section and found it underwhelming. lots of decent full-price re-issues but not a lot of used records to dig through. makes sense considering the typical college clientele. however that's not the reason for the one star review. the guy working there (the owner?) was one of those typical record store dudes who seemed to believe that only fellow dudes could be into buying records. i walked in and started browsing. ten minutes later my male roommate walked in and started browsing near the section i was in. the guy working there came over and said, "hey if you need help finding anything let me know." i turned around bc i wasn't sure if he was talking to me and it turns out he was talking to my roommate. when the guy saw me turn around he says as an afterthought "oh you too, let me know if you need anything." eye roll. read more

I have to say, this is one of the best record stores I have ever been to. They always have an amazing selection of new records, and not really specific to any one genre. You can definitely tell that the owner has a deep knowledge of the history of music and also a complete awareness to the newest underground bands. The used selection is beyond my expectations of any record store. The owner always has some super obscure jazz or psych rock on the wall with very reasonable prices. If you are a fan of records and find yourself traveling up the coast, don't hesitate to stop and pick up some new jamz for your epic road trip. read more

This store was okay. I found that their records and CDs were a bit overpriced compared to what I'm used to, though (but I am from the east coast, so who knows?). Thugs! Beware. Most records are incredibly over prized!! I have found problems with both new and old records. And returning them for your money back is impossible! On any record, even returned the next day with Original packing, bill etc, they try to give you a gift card for far less. Forget about selling records to them, as they'd offer you less than 50% of the online price with multiple excuses for instance- it's a common record, it however may not be available at their store! All new records are way over the price you could find online with far worse quality at times. I understand they are trying to keep a lost passions alive in Vinyl, but it has to be reasonable for the local crowd for them to appreciate and promote local! I might stick with Amazon! read more

I love People's! Great selection of new and used vinyl. Lots of new bands you've heard of, lots of new bands you haven't. People's has a listening station so you can preview any unsealed vinyl before you buy it. I wanted to hear what a new, sealed record sounded like, so the employee was cool enough to find me several clips on the internet of songs from the album. When I decided the record wasn't for me, the employee was cool about it and didn't act like I had just wasted his time. Instead, he asked what kind of music I liked and was able to turn me on to a new band. And isn't that really what it's all about? Also, if you're new to collecting records, don't sleep on People's HUGE selection of bargain records. Before paying top dollar somewhere else for a common record, check the bargain bins at People's first (they're in boxes under the tables). Or, if you consider yourself an audiophile and feel like you have everything already, check out People's "Wall of Surprises" (that's what I call it, at least), because you never know what you might find there. I found an OG press of the psych rarity Mad River for $30 less than what a shop in Portland was asking for it. I should mention here that People's also sells new and used CD's and used cassettes (do they still make new cassettes?), so if you're driving an older car with a tape deck in it, People's has you covered. Speaking of old cassettes and used CD's, People's will buy your old records, CD's, and cassettes for cash or give you store credit. So if you live in Humboldt, be sure to check out People's. If you're a music lover and you're passing through Arcata, do yourself a favor and stop in. read more

Great place to stop if you are looking to do a bit of digging in Arcata. There are about 10000 or so lp's and it took me about 4 solid hours to flip through them all. I asked the owner about several titles I was looking for, and he let me breeze through a box of more obscure and higher priced records behind the counter where I found a record I had been looking for. The prices are fair and I recommend making this your priority if you are passing through the area and only have several hours to spend diggin. read more
