This is probably one of the cutest bookstores that I have ever stepped foot in. The staff was so friendly and they definitely offer great book recommendations. My favorite new local bookshop.... moved to BK in September and found myself stopping in often. The staff is kind and informative but not overbearing. They really let you browse but have great suggestions if you ask. They have a shelf of staff picks and some assorted throughout the shelves which I've used to find new authors. Having a bookstore is as important to me as having a local bar (and increasingly more important, as my hangovers get worse) so I am lucky to have found Books Are Magic. The staff give great recommendations, they have talks and signings, you can go in and just hang out there for hours and make friends with bookish strangers, and (AND) the selection of greeting cards is cute. Online ordered books a month ago and still have yet to get them. Customer service is very lacking, I emailed twice, called twice, and even sent an Instagram message and no one ever got back to me or acknowledged any of my messages. I've since had to relocate and since no one ever got back to me I was unable to change my shipping address so now I will not receive the books. Very disappointing experience. I just went here for the first time and I was pleasantly surprised at the size of the store and the number of sections in the store. I browsed for a while and then decided to get a Books Are Magic tote bag (which is what I wanted to get anyway). I definitely will be visiting again the next time I am in Brooklyn! read more

I went to a book signing event for Francisco Cantu's book The Line Becomes a River. The event was great for the most part but the owner of the store threatened to call the police on people in the audience who were asking questions of the author. This was completely disrespectful. I will not be going back to Books Are Magic, and I encourage everyone reading this to avoid this place as well. read more

Really lovely locally owned bookstore -- the owner is an author herself and you can buy many of her books here too. My one real complaint is the book selection veers toward feminist/female authors, and many of the books have a NYC plot--I can only read so many books about a 20-something woman trying to find her way in NYC, which feels all too self-referential. They also need a few stepping stools -- I'm 5'2 and can't even reach/see their top few shelves of books, which is a bummer. read more

A great store that makes the most of its limited space. Also in an easy-to-get location (almost right on top of the F/G line). I saw books here I hadn't seen anywhere else, and that's saying a lot, as I live in bookstores. I would have liked to have seen more specialized sections, but that's me being nitpicky. BookCourt had more room, and I will always have a space in my heart for it, but then again, BookCourt got really pissy in the end about using their bathroom. Advantage: Books are Magic! read more

I would give zero stars if I could. Always make sure to ask for a receipt. I was accused of stealing books as soon as I paid and left the store. I felt so insulted, and I'm glad I could show the charge on my credit card. The books were even in their branded paper bag that I got from the front desk. I didn't have any expectations because they are so new and the space is a bit small but somehow I managed to find 4 books I wanted within about 6 minutes and I had to literally cut myself off, buy them and leave before I did more damage. Maybe more writers should be opening book stores because they know what awesome books look like. I am super excited about this addition to the hood! read more

After months of waiting finally got to check this place out. I adore the book selection! Like another reviewer I found 5 books I wanted within 20 mins of being there! However I wish they had more seating. I would've stayed longer and likely purchased more if they did. Also while I loved the eclectic mix of music playing, it was quite loud and not conducive to reading. I know its not a library but its hard to read with the Fugees turned up loud. Great for dancing or a bar but not for a bookstore. read more

This store is beautiful and much needed since Book Court left the neighborhood. They are always very well-stocked, and their staff is super knowledgable. Also, lol at the commenter who doesn't like that they stock so many female authors - to me, that's awesome that they make a point of doing that. But PLEASE hire someone who has actual event management experience, and consider the fact that your space might not be conducive to larger-scale events. My friends and I attempted to go to a talk and signing here, and it was an utter nightmare. I thought it was weird when I saw on the Facebook event that there wasn't any sort of list to register on - not a great sign when 300 people say they are attending. Half of the group arrived on time and was able to make it in, but was literally not in the same room that the discussion was happening in and was in such an uncomfortable spot that they just left. The second half of us was delayed due to train issues - which is obviously not the store's fault - but still arrived fifteen minutes prior to when the event was supposed to start. We were told by a very unsympathetic man staffing the front door that they were at capacity. No apology, just a "we definitely don't have any room for you" (literally, that's what he said) to the decent number of people who were waiting outside in the freezing cold. You guys are a lovely store, but you need to invest in a ticketing system (it can still be free!) or, at the very least, have a registration list and cap it. People set aside time to attend these things - they travel, they hire a babysitter - and letting it be a free for all is unfair to your customers and makes for a very uncomfortable, overcrowded experience if you do manage to get in. You cannot bring extremely popular authors into your store without having a system in place for organizing attendees. read more
