I was on vacation in Winchester Bay, Oregon. We took a drive to Coos Bay for lunch and to shop. We came across Books By The Bay. We went in and had a great 2 or 3 hours of browsing books. The man who worked there was so helpful and showed me where my favorite genres of books were. I was able to purchase many different selections. Great place, friendly staff, helpful, wonderful selection of new and used books. Just a nice, quiet place to browse, worth your time.

This is review for the cafe/coffeehouse portion as we have yet to go inside to checkout the bookstore. We used the handy drive thru. Service was fast and friendly, prices were very reasonable and we were pleased to see all the employees and customers inside wearing masks and doing what they could to keep everyone safe. Our breakfast sandwich was tasty (great ingredients and garlic aioli ftw) and a good size for sharing for those with smaller appetites. Can't wait to go again and check out the inside as well. read more

The coffee shop was recommended to us by a local, and boy, it didn't disappoint! We had the breakfast sandwich but in a wrap. Delicious! The hot sauce was spicy as well, so those of you adverse to spice be warned. The coffee was excellent as well. We then stayed and got a few books from the bookstore. An interesting mix of bookstore and coffee house, as a visitor to the area it just felt out of sync - like a locals spot and you weren't really invited. There were a handful of people sitting around the coffee shop side talking, reading and generally having a pleasant time. While my wife, myself and our son were pretty much ignored during our visit. We consider ourselves "book" people and this place was an odd experience. Not a bad experience just not a good one. We walked through the entire book store and its a nice combination of both current and out of print , new and used at various prices. Some of the used books were not cheap by any standard, and it was obvious at least to us, that customer service to the book side of the business was secondary. It may be a great locals hang out but as an outsider that was looking to buy books, support the local economy, as well as help pay staff salaries - we felt completely ignored. So much so, I put down the $60 + worth of used books I had in my arms. Our teenager who really wanted the book he found, even gave up after waiting for several minutes and no one would take his money - like I said, an odd experience. Maybe it was an off day or not - Most likely we will not return as it wasn't a memorable enough visit to warrant a return... and as such I can not recommend this to tourists or non locals. 2 Stars - the coffee smelled good... 00282 read more

Great little quaint bookstore in town---they have a coffee shop inside called "The Grounds" that offers coffee, teas and some pastries. The owner was very funny and made some silly jokes. My favorite part about the place is that you can buy used books and trade yours in as well for a used one. (Great perk especially if you're on a bike tour!) Happy Reading! read more

Great book store with strong local support! And... it's a great place to hang out! Located conveniently inside the bookstore (which is also terribly convenient being right on Highway 101 in North Bend) is a deli & coffee shop. I've perused for books, relaxed with a friend, conducted business, and had a meal. All of the above were plenty enjoyable. Every town needs at least one really good book store. We're fortunate to have Books By The Bay! Even if you're just passing through and want a snack, cup o' java, and a sit... this is a great place to hang out. read more

My buddy and I were in the area on business, we spotted the bookshop complete with a coffee bar and decided it was worth a stop. The hours were posted as open until 6 pm, the door open and it being 1:45 this would work out fine, get some coffee and rummage through the stock (being bookworms and all). Walked in and the first thing we noticed was that the coffee area was closed. My buddy left to wait in the truck, I started to look around but no one else seemed to be there! I had also noticed that the lighting was insufficient but managed to navigate generally. After some time I felt the need to ask a few questions about locating certain genres of books so I walked around the aisles and found a man sitting on the floor sorting books, I asked him if he worked there, he lazily looked up and said "We are closed", I responded with "You hours are posted as cling at 6", he just ignored me and gave me no response. What really irked me was not so much the attitude of the man but that the front door was open and the hours posted. Needless to say, this is not a way to run a retail establishment. read more
