It was fun but more than half of the park is outside and it was a quite hot. I recommend visiting in the Spring or Fall when the weather is nice. Because we came on a weekday, the crowds were very manageable. Sadly, in my opinion, too many of the outdoor exhibits were closed or under renovation. My 20 month old enjoyed looking at the cars and tractors and rode in the stroller almost the whole time. I would say this museum is good for ages 3 and up (probably why under 3 has free admission!) We started inside and then explored the outdoor grounds, which were very spacious and clean. We also ate at the cafe, which was ok but in my opinion had low food quality as the corn dogs were undercooked and was a bit expensive for its quality of food. There are many add ons to your experience that we didn't do this time because we didn't think they would be great for our toddler (earthquake simulator, movie, 3D show, observation deck). We enjoyed the park overall but we were expecting more of the exhibits indoors.

These weren't just tremors. These were landscape-altering events that rang church bells on the East Coast, reversed the flow of the Mississippi River and reshaped entire communities. Having visited the Quake Museum in New Zealand not to long ago, I appreciated how different the experience is when you're dealing with events that happened two centuries earlier, before seismology existed and before anyone understood what was happening beneath their feet. Back in those days, they truly had no idea. The museum isn't only about the earthquake. There is a surprisingly rich collection of regional history covering prohibition, local World War I and II, and the everyday life of the people who built and rebuilt this part of Missouri. It's absolutely worth the effort. If you're on I-55 between Saint Louis and Memphis, it's directly on the way. And for travelers like me heading west to east, you might even consider taking the ferry across the Mississippi since the next bridge to the north is 50 miles to Cairo or 40 miles south to Caruthersville. Or, and here's a novel thought, you might consider taking the ferry across at Dorena. The New Madrid Historical Museum is a memorable stop with real depth and I'm so very glad that I finally was able to check it off my list. I do want to add this. The museum is immediately next to the Mississippi River. If it ever floods and breaches the levees, all these treasures might be impacted. Go check this out now. Upstairs designed more for kids 8 and above. Supervision is mandatory. Lots of themed rooms for kids to learn through play. There's a garden room with big water tables. An auto shop for the car enthusiasts. A farm where you can "milk"a cow (fake cow &water). A grocery store where the kids can shop and be the cashier. A veterinarian pet shop. Fire department. Well baby check office. There are cool tubes with air that suck up handkerchiefs and tunnel above your head and shoot out from the ceiling. Musical rooms. Hair styling room. A theater room complete with a stage and curtain! There's a Lego wall. And rubber band wall to make art. A small real plane to climb in and imagine flying over fields. Really too much to list. But wow! Great entertainment for kids (and parents) of all ages. Covid19 protocol: Bathrooms were clean. Hands sanitizer was placed all over both upstairs and downstairs. Employees wore masks. Patrons were strongly recommended to wear masks, although most didn't. Staff picked up several times while we were there.. although i didn't notice any surface cleaning. Now my cooty radar was a little high, but i get that way in any type of kids play area. I made sure my kids sanitized hands after each room and we washed hands before leaving. Lots of touchable surfaces. Pre pandemic, i wouldn't think much about it, but current pandemic, I just am a little more leery. So go with that in mind. And don't come if you or anyone is sick. There was an art class going on while we were there, so there are educational opportunities here as well. The docent who met us at the door on our way out directed us to the back of the property to visit the beginnings of their statue garden. They've only got one statue so far, but it sounds like they have plans to expand. This doesn't take long to go through, but it was worth the visit.

Housing a small collection of regional artifacts; informative displays about the life and everyday items of the indigenous people. A reconstructed Mastodon (a replica from a cast) stands in the entryway, a number of real fossils are on display. "Old Town Arkansas" is a walkthrough display of shops and offices from the early 1800's. This is a kid friendly place with a number of interactive displays and activities. If you don't expect this to be the MET, you will not be disappointed. Yes it is a small place but I really enjoyed the visit and will follow the website to see future exhibits.
