There isn't a charge to enter the museum. But, they do accept donations and they ask that you sign the guest book. Although it was small, I was surprised at the variety of themes that were on display. Art, Sikeston history, ties to country music, Native American artifacts, military, and more. It was the first museum I was in that had a real bail of cotton and a cotton plant. (Though, I am sure others exist.)

This oldest house in New Madrid was built by Abraham Augustine and moved to its present location in order to escape the encroaching flood waters of the Mississippi River. The house is now home to the newest attraction to the community, the River Walk Gallery. Various photography, paintings, and exhibits will be held throughout the year with different themes.

Upstairs designed more for kids 8 and above. Supervision is mandatory. Lots of themed rooms for kids to learn through play. There's a garden room with big water tables. An auto shop for the car enthusiasts. A farm where you can "milk"a cow (fake cow &water). A grocery store where the kids can shop and be the cashier. A veterinarian pet shop. Fire department. Well baby check office. There are cool tubes with air that suck up handkerchiefs and tunnel above your head and shoot out from the ceiling. Musical rooms. Hair styling room. A theater room complete with a stage and curtain! There's a Lego wall. And rubber band wall to make art. A small real plane to climb in and imagine flying over fields. Really too much to list. But wow! Great entertainment for kids (and parents) of all ages. Covid19 protocol: Bathrooms were clean. Hands sanitizer was placed all over both upstairs and downstairs. Employees wore masks. Patrons were strongly recommended to wear masks, although most didn't. Staff picked up several times while we were there.. although i didn't notice any surface cleaning. Now my cooty radar was a little high, but i get that way in any type of kids play area. I made sure my kids sanitized hands after each room and we washed hands before leaving. Lots of touchable surfaces. Pre pandemic, i wouldn't think much about it, but current pandemic, I just am a little more leery. So go with that in mind. And don't come if you or anyone is sick. I was in Poplar Bluff visiting a friend who recently moved to town for work. When I travel, no…read morematter how small the place I visit, I like to get a feel for the locale and its history. The Railroad Museum did not disappoint. As soon as we entered the museum we were greeted by a friendly older gentleman who introduced himself and explained that he started this museum about 15 years ago when he retired from working for the railroad after 42 years. This place is clearly his baby. It's a very thorough collection of railroad artifacts and local photos (my favorite being the 19th century photo showing the overturned circus train and all the loose circus animals running around town). It definitely gives you a good sense of place and what was going on in southeast Missouri during a different era. In the back of the museum is a large room with a huge model train set with multiple trains running on it. I couldn't help myself...as soon as I walked in I squealed with delight. Wouldn't you? The Museum also features a gift shop with lots of toy trains and other train related products. Santa Claus was in the gift shop that day visiting with the local children who were stopping by to tell him their Christmas wishes. Very, very cute. If you're in the area and looking for something to do, pay a visit. And don't miss the old train cars out front, including a real caboose, that you can go inside and visit.
