Moderate selection and the rice bowls are mediocre and overpriced.

For example, recently purchased some super tender okra from here--and it's the middle of winter. They encourage me to take all the time that I want to scan the various condiments. Hot and cold prepared foods were added along the way. PP's corner stall has been a presence in Eastern Market for many years. They fill a niche.

Whenever I pass by this stall, their kimchi is exceptionally bright red with white opaque nappa leaves which tells me everything they have is made fresh and there is a quality control. Eastern Market has a great selection of vendors, but this one in particular feels like a mini market seeing that you can get many specialty things from here. Like an Asian market, they are highly seasonal to Asian ingredients so I would come here for that! But do pay special attention to their small bites. We got their kimbap which had a glossy shine from the sesame oil. Each ingredient was well-seasoned and masterfully rolled right in its seaweed paper. Their pork skewer was also so delicious, with a great char and sweet soy marinate. So glad we turned the corner from the produce side and made it to their ready-made food selection. This is a really well rounded stall.

A peer closer, and see a beautiful hot case of generously stuffed fresh breads or sweet baklava glistening with simple syrup. Maybe, if you're lucky, you'll be there when the cheery owner invites you inside. He is so full of happiness and pride for what hes able to offer to the DC food scene. When we went, he really wanted us fed and they had a special on stuffed zucchini, meaning that each was cored, stuffed, and stewed in a tangy rich tomato sauce. I can't guarantee that they consistently offer this since it was their special, but see this as an example of the home-style cooking and fresh ingredients they offer. There is so much attention to detail and love when it comes to the small portion of ready-made food they have. There is also a great case of the interior stocked with such a variety of more specialty and staple produce, dairy products (real kafir, fresh white cheeses, etc...), and atop are bulk items of infused honeys and high-quality golden olive oil. The breads are made fresh and are just so fluffy, and the owner happily warmed it for us so it was pipping hot when we ripped in. I would be such a proud stall owner too. When I come to Union Market, I often get discouraged since you will regularly see a substantial item in the $16 - 35 dollar range, even if its a handheld or quick snack. Here, Almaala's foods are below $10, and that has been a constant despite the recent surge of food prices. They really are delivering a variety of SWANA flavors, find bread densely packed with za'atar or stuffed grape leaves. All of these ingredients (especially at this quality and freshness) are difficult to find in regular grocery stores, so do support this small business. You will just be that much more nourished for it.

Their greens are so fresh and delicious. If I was going to a party and not making my own salsa, I would probably get salsa and chips from here. They offer a nice variety and everything is tasty. I agree with Pam about the inconsistent pricing. It used to be $4 for what they considered a small bag of greens (but enough for weekday lunches for once person if mixed with another bag), but now it is $3, and I think the bags are smaller. The woman I always see working is sort of friendly - perhaps a bit more now that she recognizes me.

They have (overpriced $4!) chips and pitas, and all of those amazing sauces and dips to try on pita or chips, as well as an expanding albeit inconsistent repertoire of greens. Make sure to use the little utensils to get samples (no dipping of chips!) or you might get reprimanded. MY FAVES I especially like the Indian curry hummus, Quinoa salad, Spicy Cilantro salsa, and the Peanut Sauce. They also have other salsas, dips, salad vinaigrette, and other hummus options. I know they just started branching out into bottled sauces, so keep an eye out for new stuff! $$$ Prices can run a little steep, but everything is fresh and packed on dry ice for display. This isn't Pace salsa, you're going to have to put this in the fridge as soon as you get home. Container for dips, sauces, etc are bigger than 2 decks of cards, smaller than a Steno half notebook(4oz?). *3 containers for $12 *1 container for $4.5 *$4 for chips alone GREENS Think you hate salad? This place demonstrates what salad mixes are supposed to look like(micro greens!). Sometimes they even have edible flowers in 'em and usually run around $5. I don't like salad, but this stuff is actually very appetizing and visually appealing too (sugar snap pea shoots! marigolds!). Of course I throw chicken and a little dressing on top of it, but I digress. They do run out of greens rather early though, so don't dawdle. LOCATION Usually they're under the overhang on 7th in front of Eastern Market on Saturdays and Sundays. Why are these amazing ppl getting 4.25 stars instead of 5? They've been steadily raising their prices (it was $10/4 sauces last spring! Now it's $12/3 hence) and are inconsistent on what they have/run out of stuff.
